  1. First, you can find real QRH's on eBay. For example, here https://www.ebay.com/itm/B737-300-400-500-Quick-Reference-Handbook-Higher-Power-Aviation-QRH-Like-NEW/132433811802?hash=item1ed5ab995a:g:4U0AAOSwY~1aMZ73&vxp=mtr and https://www.ebay.com/itm/ze-119-737-Quick-Reference-Handbook-Boeing-Airplane-Pilot-Plastic-Spiral-Bound/122695940181?hash=item1c913f7855:g:gQcAAOSwD6xZsvui&vxp=mtr Second, the manuals are definitely copyrighted (principally by Boeing), but I seem to remember reading an email from the CEO that it was OK to print one copy. Of course, he may have been shot down by Boeing, or I may be mis-remembering, or it may only have applied to the material written by PMDG itself. Finally, the printed spiral bound version is definitely easier to use than a self-printed one. The paper size is not standard, and the spiral binding and tabs are very nice. If you do print, I recommend black and white. Only a few pages benefit from color. Good luck.
  2. Mikkel and Tabs, thanks to both of you. I had forgotten about the GT650M. If I can get this running on my Macbook, that would be awesome. The only catch is... I have to install Flight Sim on it first. I have not done that in years. But it's probably worth it to have a portable machine where I can study the cockpit etc. I will plan to run in Boot Camp, of course, rather than in Windows emulation mode.
  3. I have a 2-3 year old Nvidia card; we will see how well it runs. If anyone tries running on Intel 4000 graphics, please let us know what happens. Specifically, my work machine is a Macbook Pro retina (about 1 year old; 2.6 GHz Core i7 processor). Thanks for any information, such as JeffreyMG. Roger Bohn

    777 PDF Manuals

I have done this also. I considered making them available but figured that there was no way to post them such that only licensed users could get them. I had not thought someone might even object to the very concept of adding links! It's really not that hard to add links to an existing PDF, with any suitable PDF creation program. But of course there are so many of them. Still, it's worth doing for any chapter that you use a lot.
  5. The 320M is decent. But exactly what computer do you have? According to a quick check, the 320M appeared in a 13 inch Macbook Pro. Is that what you have? In any case, back to your original question: memory error.
  6. I'm no expert on memory management, but I know a fair amount about different Mac laptops. The Macbooks have no dedicated graphics processor; they use Intel integrated graphics which is part of the CPU. Until very very recently, Intel integrated graphics were junk - think 10x slower than a mid level graphics card in the same year. The Macbook PRO is a very different story. They have decent graphics processors, although certainly less than a high-end gaming machine. My present MBP with retina display has a NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB . But this machine costs 2x a low-end Macbook. Check the specs on your machine. (Use "About this Mac" on the Apple menu.) I'm not sure lack of a graphics processor explains the out of memory error, but it does mean you will never get a reasonable frame rate. Sorry.
  7. 1. This is silly. All PMDG products have PDF manuals. Look at the name of the company: Precision Manuals.... I don't know if there is official word, but it will come. 2. Anyone else who wants to stop whinging and get on with learning from PDFs: Look them up on the Web. The 737ng cockpit site has some 777 manuals, for example. 3. For myself, I printed approx 1000 pages total from the 737 PDF manuals that PMDG provided. I also ordered the cockpit posters. I'll probably do the same for the 777 when it comes out. Now back to the regular program: 30% whinging, 70% expressions of delight.
  8. I have a really dumb follow-on. Everyone talks about EZdok, but is there any way to define views using plain FSX? I only fly the NGX, so I know very little about MS Flight Sim. I have gotten, and am gradually learning to use, TrackIR. But I want to set up predefined views of the overhead panels, and I'm having a very hard time. thanks for suggestions.
  9. Nope. Not working for me. I spent half an hour on this Thursday and another 20 minutes yesterday (Friday May 31). I just checked again - still got "You have nothing in your cart." But I've gotten lots of other errors in my odyssey. Here's the sequence I went through yesterday: 0. On Thursday, could not get the right items into my cart. I filed a trouble ticket. I got an email suggesting clearing my cache, etc. So I did that; I also tried Firefox instead of Chrome. (I'm on a Mac - no Explorer) Friday: 1) I WAS able to get all 3 items into my cart, and go to checkout. 2) I got a "transaction refused" message. I suspect that means credit card failed. It's a newly issued card on an old account, but someone else in my family was able to use it previously. 3) I tried cutting my cart down to 1 item, in hopes that might solve the problem. The original order was for $205; maybe that is too big? The cart went down to 1 item. However when I went to check out all 3 items were back in the cart. 4) I quit my browser and restarted. I loaded your site, and was asked if I wanted to restore an old shopping cart. I selected the most recent shopping cart for loading - big mistake! It had 3 items in it. 5) Repeat step 3: could not cut the shopping cart to 1 item. 6) Quit the browser again, this time started from an empty cart. Put one item in the cart. 7) Go to checkout. Get a message "your cart is empty." I responded to the email from PMDG, sending this list, including a video of step 6 and 7 repeated twice. No response so far today, but the day is young. 8) Today: Repeated steps 6 and 7 in Chrome. Same result 9) Loaded Firefox. Repeated step 3. Same result: I could not cut the order down to 1 item. I've spent about an hour on this, total. Is there any other method for ordering your products? I can't make a medium-sized order ($200) or a small order ($25). Maybe I should try a big order? (Sorry, I'm getting frustrated here.) There are a few more things I can try, like setting up an entirely new account, with a new credit card. I'll try that tonight or tomorrow. At this point I feel like I should get half off the darned stuff - if I ever succeed! Anyway, if anyone else is having trouble too, my advice is: post a note here, then do something else for a few days. Roger Bohn
  10. 2 monitors showing different parts of the same cockpit, no problem. You can open multiple virtual windows into the cockpit, either 2-D or 3-D, as I'm sure you know. I'd consider 3 monitors, actually: one in the middle with a common view that does not change, and one on each side that can be moved around as the pilots want. Multiple mice: no problem but only one will have control at a time - there is only a single cursor, as discussed. Yoke and pedals: not sure but it's worth trying. MS Windows should see them as separate HID (Human Interface Device). If it does not, try different brands or models for each user. Like on an Airbus, though, if the 2 pilots do different things at same time, results may not be what you want! One option if you have the $ is to give one user something like the HOTAS Warthog. That user controls the aircraft with hardware buttons, and let the other user click on virtual buttons with the mouse. The throttle cluster goes in the middle, just like on the real aircraft. That way each user has a "self-contained" experience without having to coordinate beyond the flying itself. The trick to all this is that PMDG and Windows "think" that everything is being done by a single user, who just has a lot of input devices operating. Be sure that you have enough fully powered USB ports on your computer - using a USB hub may not work well. Recent motherboards have up to 10 USB ports, which should be enough. Let us know how it works. Then add TrackIR, and if that works use 2 TrackIRs. :(
  11. Cut the processor back to i5-2500, cut the RAM back to 8 GB as others have said, and don't get a RAID, especially right now because hard drive prices are elevated for the next few months. 500 to 1000GB of hard drive is plenty - you can add another if you ever fill up. Follow others' advice on the video card Things to buy with the money you save:SSD Solid State Drive. I got a 60GB for about $100, but an even smaller one will work for the operating system. A second monitor. Overclock the processor - my i5-2500 runs at 4 GHz without breaking a sweat.I don't know what prices are like in Canada, but in the US $2400 is way too high.
  12. 18 inch monitor is small by modern standards - that's why the text looks small. The solution depends on your graphics card. Most cards now have two outputs. Get a used monitor for $40 on Craigslist, and keep it focused on the key displays you want. Of course also play with the native monitor resolution - but that's unlikely to fix anything.
  13. Coolers: my expert and I were very impressed at how much OC we got on my i5-2500K with only the stock (Intel retail package) cooler. I had assumed I'd need a better cooler but we ended up not using. Just saying - try without it, see if you can save money. It's not like the older generation Intel chips that ran hot.
  14. Why not? - dissing Microsoft is one of the pleasures of life, especially for those of us who spent years being stuck with its latest stupid idea operating system .
  15. Techreport does an excellent review of current components in different price ranges, every few months. http://techreport.com/articles.x/21876/1 is the latest. I just completely gutted my 5 year old machine and installed:i5-2500K for $200 == overclocked to 4 GHz with zero trouble.Z68 motherboard for $1808 GB of DDR3 for about $80I could easily cut $150 off this by getting lower grades of everything - see their "budget" model. The i5-2500K is an awesome processor in terms of price/performance. Be sure to get the K model for an extra $10.
  16. Yes - think about the choice between MacBook Pro and iMac. The MBP is a more useful all-around machine, and very adequate for most anything. BUT in any given year, the current iMac is higher performance and higher performance/price, because it is not constrained. The monitor is not critical - just add the cost of an equivalent external monitor to the price of the MBP, and you will have a 2-monitor setup that works much better than in Windows. (But the 27 inch monitor in the iMac is indeed awesome, and probably $500 for an equal quality, equal size monitor!) Frankly my guess is that a current MBP (new ones came out today) will be fine for FSX, since it is such old software. So it depends on whether you want this machine for real use (get the laptop MBP) or games (get the iMac). Either way it's a winner.
  17. Thanks for the update. So we can modify my assertion to include chess. Corrections in italics:Most software is still not well multithreaded. Except for highly specialized programs (eg. graphics rendering, chess playing) very little software supports more than 4 threads. In addition the marginal value of additional threads declines; the 5th is worth less than the second, and so forth. On the other hand, in future more software will support multithreading.
  18. Just a note on hyperthreading, confirming once again that the i5-2500K is the way to go.Both the i5-2500K and the i7-2600K have 4 physical cores. The i7 supports hyperthreading, which means each physical core can run two threads. Thus the i5 can run up to 4 threads, while the i7 can run up to 8 threads. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2383921,00.asp#fbid=iJ1IlFOSxAF Most software is still not well multithreaded. Except for highly specialized programs (eg. graphics rendering) essentially NO software supports more than 4 threads. So even in a multi-threaded program (which sounds like FS is not), the i5-2500K is plenty. As others have said it does an amazing job of overclocking. My 2500K is running at 4GHz still using the stock cooler!!
  19. For the FCOM volume 1, I found I could reduce it to only 180 printed pages (357 original pages). From page 358 on is repetitive sets of performance data for different 737 versions. No need to print it all. So I set it up as:Print 1 to 3572 pages per sheet, Long edge binding125% 3 hole paper. (Could also use booklet printing.) At $.06 per page this is less than $15. But there's no way to do the same thing for volume 2. I may put together a proper PDF table of contents (with the PDF page numbers) to make searching through the e-files much easier.
  20. I did something similar at Kinko's (now Fedex). 2-up, double sided, black & white, spiral bound. No tabs. Since the original is 8.5 x 5.5 the 2-up works OK (2 pages ==> 1 page), but it does make it a little harder to follow. Cost was $.11 per page x 220 pages + $11 for binding and reformatting = about $36. Then they bound it backwards, so I have to go back. My conclusion:1) Farming it out to Fedex/Staples is a bit cheaper for the "short manuals" than buying from PMDG, but the quality of the product is not as good. I estimate that the Op Manuals will cost $170, so if you want the whole thing you should definitely buy it.2) Doing it yourself: the OP is correct that doing an entire manual yourself is marginal. He could have used 3-hole punched paper to reduce his time somewhat. Inkjet printers are not designed for that kind of volume, meaning a good chance of damage. Good laser printers at $.05 per page (if you buy recycled cartridges) would be cheaper than the other options, so it depends on how you value your time. Of course the product won't be as good.3) If you only want selective sections of the manuals, printing it yourself is cost-effective. Copyright: I didn't see anything specific on this in the documentation, but as software vendors have switched to PDF manuals many of them (most?) now allow and encourage you to print the manuals yourself. But without an explicit statement from PMDG/Boeing we are kind of in limbo with places like Staples. Finally, I bought the software because for $70 it was the only (and cheap!) way to get an "official" Boeing-approved manual. The software itself is a bonus If I decide I really need 2400 more pages to read, I'll buy the other manuals from PMDG.
  21. Solved - it took them 4 minutes! Someone is hard at work.Downloading now, at 6.4 mbps.
  22. Moi aussi. Paid through Paypal 12 hours ago, got confirmation from them. Order #: 160141. But site says "pending," and I can't file a trouble ticket. UPDATE: The trouble ticket just went through, so judging from other comments in this thread things will straighten out. Sorry life has been so hard - hope you guys can catch up on sleep this weekend. Ticket Number 259-15CECB44-F592 ORDER CODE: UHF9490234238
  23. I'm in the "paid, but no email from PMDG." I did get confirmation from Paypal, including an invoice number. The PMDG site says I have not purchased yet - it's still in my shopping cart.Presumably this will sort out tomorrow.
