  1. The other day i had to re-install my flight simulator again! I'm using Windows 7, 32bit and FSX so my question is this.I read that you could set up another user account specifically for FSX which would help FSX run quicker. I set up my new user account called "flight sim"and installed FSX and all my additional aircraft which all work fine. What i would like to know, is this. Is there any way to stop flight sim working in the other main account, as at the minute FSX works fine but the add-on aircraft, especially from PMDG and Quality wings don't, and FSX then crashes. I'm not sure if it's possible to stop access from one user and not another to one program. I have both accounts set as "administrator" if that helps. Thanks for any help anyone might be able to shed my way.Regards.David Phillips
  2. Hi all,So i'm not sure if this is a general FSX query, Window 7 or a PMDG one, but as this revolves around the PMDG MD11, i'll post it here. I recently re-installed FSX onto my PC after suffering a problem, So at the same time i thought it would be a good idea to set up a new user id just for FSX. This all went well, i had to re-install all my PMDG aircraft too, as the new installation didn't recognize them. So they are all working again, except that when i try and download from the PMDG website or browse the disc, the computer downloads the livery ok, but then it isn't appearing in my aircraft page in FSX. Now i have heard stories somewhere to the effect that folders get saved into different locations if you change the location of FSX on your PC from the default. Is this what i have done? If so i wasn't aware a new user id saved the program elsewhere on the PC. How do i find out where i should be saving these liveries too? How do i change the destination of a downloaded livery?Any help would be gratefully received.Thanks.
  3. Hi Richard,My FSX recently stopped working properly and i spent today re-installing everything. I uninstalled FSX but left all the add on aircraft in place, I don't have any add on scenery, but this is what happened, if it helps you. After re installation all the add on aircraft worked fine and were there, Carenado, Captain Sim, Flight One. The only ones which wouldn't work were Quality Wings and PMDG. So i uninstalled the these programs through the pc's control panel, "add/remove program". Then I ran FSX and re-installed them from disc or saved zip files, which i had archived. I ran the sim after each install to check the aircraft worked, and they did, they worked fine. Beware when you re-install FSX that you install the service packs 1 and 2 correctly if you need them, as you have to run FSX in between each service pack update, and actually fly somewhere, this is to set up the sims parameters correctly. As far as i understand it, add on aircraft in FSX are installed in the FSX program. Scenery can be saved anywhere in the PC's program files and FSX will find it, which would explain why your scenery was still present after FSX re-installation.I hope this is any help to you,Regards.
  4. Hi Paul, Thanks for your suggestions, unfortunately things didn't go quite as planned, I copied the fsx. cfg file as you suggested but when i came to paste it back into fsx, it somehow got deleted. I therefore took the opportunity to create as separate user account on the PC and re install everything again from scratch, which may have been quite long winded, but did solve the problem, and helped with the running of fsx.Once again thanks for your assistance.uote name='Paul J' timestamp='1310259800' post='2014013']Hi David; rt-click on your fsx.cfg, cut and paste it into the same folder, then restart FSX. It will make a new fsx.cfg, and it will likely fix the problem. It sometimes gets corrupted, and this is the very quickest 'fixes' that we know. The other one that sometimes kills the startup is a corrupt logbook - but we won't go there yet, ok? Try it and post back here.
  5. Hi all. Here's my problem. My PC runs Windows7 32bit, which i know you all think isn't a very good combination when running FSX. Now since last July , when i bought my PC and FSX, it's all worked faultlessly, with PMDG, Carenado, Quality Wings add on's which all have worked faultlessly too! perfect................ Well it had to end eventually. Now tonight, i thought a quick half hour flight, in the sunset would be a nice way to wind down at the end of the day! except that when i started FSX in administrator mode i got the basic "Microsoft Flight Simulator X" screen come up with the small circle spinning round, and that was it, nothing else. I tried restarting the PC a number of times, all the same. So my question to you helpful folks out there, is why all of a sudden a program which works fine, suddenly doesn't........... and more to the point, what can i do about it, short of re-installing everything again. If it turns out to be a suddenly corrupted files or something, and i do have to re-install FSX would i have to do a re-install of all the add-on aircraft as well, or just the main flight simulator?Hope someone can help! Thanks for your replies.David Phillips
  6. Hi Molleh, I don't know if my experiances with PMDG's MD11 are any help to you. I have been landing the aircraft manually following the ILS most of the time, but also use the AUTOLAND in bad weather. Like you i use the FSX ATC and FSX route planning, it all seems to work ok for me too. The speed of the aircraft during approach is triggered by your flap setting, the aircraft will only slow down when you select the next flap setting. MD 11's land using 35 or 50 degree flap settings. Unlike Boeing aircraft, where you select the speed and then select flaps to suit, on the MD11 you select the flap for the speed you want, takes some getting used to, but that's how it works. You do need to make sure that your speed on the AUTOPILOT panel is set to PROFILE mode, i've found that this is also the best way to get the aircraft to stop at the end of the runway after landing too. If your setting the speed manually i found the aircraft continues down the runway at the set speed instead of stopping. Don't forget the MD11 has an autopilot disconnect on the yoke, this doesn't disconnect the autothrottle, this is located on the left hand side of the left throttle handle as a black button, this is another querk of the MD11. Two disconnect buttons!Your other question concerning the ILS frequencies, i find i take the ILS frequency from the FSX map mode, so i know i have the correct frequency for the runway i want to land at. It may not be as realistic as online ATC and SID and STAR charts but it does seem to work ok. Like you i program the FMC using the NAV RAD button, the ILS frequency is only picked up by the FMC if the two VOR radio settings are set to AUTO ie have no pre-selected frequency showing on the NAV RAD page. Before anyone else here makes any comments on what i've just told you, I'm not an expert on the MD11, but i enjoy flying mine, and just wanted to pass on what works for me. Since receiving an MD11 into my hanger, about a year ago, my B744 hasn't flown much at all. The MD11 really is a most amazing aircraft and works brilliantly. Persevere and enjoy what i think is one of the most fantastic aircraft on FSX to date.Hope this helps, regards. David Phillips.
  7. Hi Robert,Pleased to see your taking such care with the 737ngx. I have all of your aircraft for FSX and I have to say they all work perfectly. Any PMDG aircraft is a joy to fly! To be honest i realise everyone is keen to get their hands on a 737ngx as soon as possible, I'd much prefer a complete aircraft that works exactly as it's supposed to, even if I have to wait 6 days, 6 weeks or even 6 months. It's a small price to pay for a good quality product, which I know this will be.Once again, thanks for some truly great aircraft.
  8. Hi all,Well my Martinair Cargo MD11 started at Stanstead and flew to Anchorage, then i carried on to Tokyo, now my MD11 is parked on the ramp in soeul, South Korea waiting it's next flight.I'm starting to think this trip might turn into a trip round the world.Cheers all, interesting thread to see where everyone is.
  9. Hi John,Can't help with your light problem, but the dial-a-flap i find i use 23deg for takeoff's and i heard on a MD11 video that they use 15deg as a standard setting when landing works well, it's a clever system.Dave Phillips.
  10. Hi Maldo,I bought TrackIR5 at the beginning of this year 2011, and i wouldn't be without it now. I'm flying PMDG MD11 most of the time, and although i'm still playing around with the TrackIR software to improve the way the cam moves in the sim. Thing is, it works, and well. If i had to comment on anything, it's the fact that you occasionally lose contact with the detector on the monitor when looking up or down in the MD11 as some of the switches and controls are high up in the cockpit or low down. If your using the supplied hat clip, the detector can be affected by reflections in the room, which can cause unwanted flickering of the view. The alternative Pro clip is supposed to be alot better in bright environments as it contains IR lights in the clip, although you will need some headphones to mount the Pro clip on the side of. I haven't had chance to try the Pro clip yet myself, as the hat clip so far has been ok.Hope this helps someDave Phillips.
  11. Hi Gary,Thanks for replying so quickly, I will try this, i've been trying to increase the page file size, but it didn't seem to do much, with your instructions i'll have another go tomorrow. Ok so page file to "system managed" alter the bcdedit prompt and look at increasing the RAM to 4GB.Thanks very much for your help.Regards Dave Phillipsquote name='Gary A' timestamp='1300041964' post='1945137']Hi Dave you should do two things outside of the main thing you already confessed.1) Buy another gig of RAM, make sure it is an exact match to the three gigs you already have.2) Set a bcedit command as follows (you do not need the fourth gig of RAM for this to work:A) Open a command prompt with Administration rights. You find the command prompt box under "Programs-Accessories-Command prompt" :( Right Click the command prompt and select "run as administrator". C) Enter in the box at the prompt: (copy/paste if you wish) bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA 2560 and press enter d). Reboot This will increase your virtual memory (not RAM)3) Also make sure your Page file is set to "System Managed" if you do not understand this then do not worry likely you did not change it and it does not apply.
  12. Hi everyone,Quite often towards the end of a flight my system freezes and the dreaded box pops up saying "your system has run out of available memory" so my question is, can i increase the amount of RAM contained in my system?I'm running FSX usually flying PMDG MD11, and my system is i3 dual core processor, 3GB RAM, Radeon 5770 graphics card. With Windows 7, 32bit. I know what your all going to say, upgrade to 64bit, but at the minute thats not an option, due to only having my present system 9 months, and then that was the top end of my spending limit. Now i rang my local computer store to ask about upgrading the RAM from 3 to 4 GB but they tell me Windows 7, 32bit will not recognize any more than 3GB of RAM. But i seem to remember seeing somewhere here, that Windows will in fact recognize 4GB RAM! Is this correct and i in fact could upgrade to 4GB or am i wasting my time and will just have to stick with 3GB. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks Dave Phillips.
  13. Hi Jim,Thanks for the quick reply to my problem, I've just been checking that link and will work through it next time i have some spare time available. For the minute i've bookmarked the link and will read through the suggestions. Thanks David Phillips.
  14. Hi,I'm not sure if this should be posted here or not, if not i apologize. I have seen a similar problem described here once, but can't seem to find the post now i could use it!!So my problem is this. Most of my flights are a couple of hours duration, usually using PMDG MD11 or occasionally PMDG 747-400 around Europe, i have installed Ground Environment X and have the latest version 2 installed. The flight proceeds as expected until i start to descend towards my destination. Sometimes as i approach around 10 000ft the view out of the cockpit will just freeze up on me, without any warning, never to return to normal. This doesn't happen every time, but will end the flight when it does.My last two flights for example were from Stanstead to Lisbon the flight out was fine, not one problem. However the flight back was ok until i started descending towards Stanstead crossing over London. The FSX froze and the fault window said "your computer has run out of available memory." I'm using windows 7, 32bit with 3GB RAM, i3 dual core processor, Radeon HD5770 graphics card. I contacted my computer store, to see if it would be worth expanding the RAM to 4GB but they tell me Windows 7 will only recognize 3GB of RAM. So that doesn't sound like a fix!So my thoughts are, is this a problem with the computer loading the scenery for the destination, as when i start at Stanstead and fly over London the scenery is presumably already loaded when the flight starts, and so no problem is encountered. Will i have to reduce the scenery levels, which i'd sooner not do if i don't have to, in order to finish a flight? My other thought, is that London is what Microsoft say in the Learning Centre is a detailed area, as is Heathrow, which is rendered in greater detail than the default airports. This same problem occurred once on a flight to Anchorage Intl Airport, which i see is another "detailed" airport in FSX. Is there anyway to make these "detailed" airports to the same level as all the other ordinary airports in the FSX world?I have seen a posting somewhere here about a very similar problem, i think the fix was to change something in the FSX config file, would this help?I would be interested to hear from anybody with experience of this problem happening to them. Thanks for any help and i'm sorry to ramble on. Just trying to explain the problem clearly.David Phillips.
  15. Hi, Thanks for getting back so quickly. I'll check the site out ready for the start of the race.Dave Phillips.
  16. Hi Phil,Just reading your problem, not sure i can really help much. One thing i happen to have read here once, was the fact that you have to install the FSX service updates correctly. Install fsx then fly the default aircraft, then install update 1, fly again, then install update 2, fly again. Each time you fly the default aircraft it allows fsx to set up it's settings internally. Then try reinstalling you J41.Might just help.Good luckDave Phillips.
  17. Hi Texas Hood,I had the same problem, which i found to be caused by flying with "real world weather" enabled. What caused the problem was when the weather in FSX updated after the usual 15minutes. This would cause a sudden change of wind direction, sometimes as much as 180 degrees and huge changes in wind speed. The MD11 autopilot would try to compensate, but real weather doesn't change as suddenly as FSX weather and the autopilot would end up overspeeding, resulting in the effects you mentioned. I cured this by flying with "static real world weather" selected when i set up the flight. Problem solved.hope this helps some.Dave Phillips
  18. Hi all,Nice to read where all these wonderful MD11's are hiding. My own MD11 is currently sitting in on the Cargo apron at Geneva, after arriving from Stanstead earlier today. Maybe tomorrow i might fly back!!Cheers Dave Phillips
  19. Hi Eamonn,I'm quite interested in this round the world race, not to take part in the race, but to follow those with far more knowledge and experience than myself. Will it be possible once the race starts to follow everyones progress online somehow, either on a world map or by webcam links. I don't know how this usually works. I just think it might be interesting to follow.Thanks.David Phillips.
  20. Hi Bigpom,I'm just upgrading to a 24inch monitor myself. I've had the same thing and it appears you have to run FSX at the resolution for your monitor, when in full screen. Your right the writing is smaller, but you have more image in on the screen, and more detail. Also the view won't be distorted, like it will, if you set the resolution at anything other setting. This only works full screen, in window's mode you will have distorted gauges etc, because the window isn't at the correct size for the resolution.Hope this helps, if you haven't already sorted the problem.Cheers Dave.
  21. Hi all,I'm currently using a Thrustmaster joystick, which works fine, and i'm mainly flying pmdg aircraft. Just recently I have been considering buying a Yoke to improve the experience of my simming. But my question is which one?I've been reading through the posts on here, and it appears there are two to choose from, CH products and Saitek. I've read here, good, bad, and some real horror's about both. This has kinda put me off a little bit and I'm, wondering if I should just stick with my trusty stick! Unfortunately money is limited, so can't go to the high end yokes that are out there. I was leaning towards the Saitek product, mainly due to the fact, that it looks to be a better build quality, but maybe looks can be deceiving. Can anyone please let me know if these horror stories are true? which one of these two yokes is the better? and is there any similarly priced alternative? Thanks for any help anyone may have.David Phillips.
  22. Hello Guy,I have just been flying Stansted UK to Anchorage Alaska, after 7hrs flying i went through cold air at 36 000ft and the fuel froze too. Looking through PMDG's manuals the MD11 isn't fitted with fuel heaters. At -35C I believe there is an automatic system to circulate fuel through the tanks, from cold tanks to warmer ones, but no heaters. I think if the fuel gets as low as -37C the the systems informs you to descend to lower air, before the fuel actually freezes, at -40C and stops your engines in flight. This will happen even with failures disabled!! So be careful flying in very cold climates.Hope this help anyDavid Phillips
  23. Hi Paul,Thanks for the reply, i'll try this next time, can't remember if I did that or not, I don't think so.Cheers David.
  24. Hi all,If I attempt to autoland the MD11, everything goes fine until after touchdown when the rudder suddenly goes full left or full right. This would be ok if it didn't make taxing the aircraft so difficult. The rudder can be centred with the joystick, but when the pressure is released it's back to full left or right again. If I land the aircraft manually flying the ILS then everything is fine, it only happens if I attempt autoland.I'm sure others have already said it, but what a fantastic aircraft. The other aircraft in my hanger are decidedly dusty now!!David.
  25. Hi, It's a while since i last posted anything here, apologies if i get it wrong!I'm flying mainly PMDG 747 and MD11, when I fly an ILS approach, I like to fly it manually, now I can follow the localiser fine up to a point between 1000ft and 500ft from the runway, when the localizer beam suddenly veer's off to one side. Even in good visibility you can see your lined up with the runway, before the needle veers, so it's not that i'm off course. This is making low visibility landings almost impossible though. This seems to be happening at any airport, not specific ones, if that helps any. Thanks for any help.David.
