  1. I agree with James, but would say again that I don't think the learning curve to get the plane in the air and fly a simple route is that steep. Or Tabs wouldn't have been able to put it all so succinctly into a PDF and video. Also, in Air Hauler, I often fly the 738 into small(ish) fields which don't have proper SID/STAR or just don't need them. Also, don't forget, SID/STAR is only a way of getting you onto your route. if you don't fly VATSIM and want to just fly from place to place, it's just as easy once you know how to work your route into FSX so the default ATC can direct you. It's not the way I fly, as I don't even use ATC but it's certainly doable. It's not mandatory, either to use SID/STAR. You will do once you have mastered the basics though, I expect. That's why I love the NGX so much; once you've picked up how to start and fly a route you just improve over time. Nobody is suggesting we all become or are anywhere near a par with RW pilots, but as you say James, it gives FSX'ers a chance to get in the seat of a truly cool plane, and to a certain extent, you can do it even if you have never done it before. I did. I never flew tubes before I got NGX and within a week I was all over the shop in it  buy it jake
  2. Looks nice. Like the Wx radar. low stuff looks nice too...What res are the textures in those shots?
  3. I totally agree with this, but you can fly it quickly if you are prepared to put in a tiny bit of work watching and reading the first and second tutorials..Its within most intelligent ppls grasp imo. My ten-year old son can start from C&D and fly a route now (proud dad ) best jake EDIT: I just got in trouble; he's 11 now  I don't spend too much time simming, honest!
  4. Until I got my Titan I would have agreed with the internal limiter but it is truly awful with the Titan (on my rig anyway) I now have it externally limited by using DXTORY and Vsync on 1/2 in NVI. Absolutely rock-solid at 30 everywhere now. Was about 14-18 with it limited to 30 by FSX (and less than 10 at some heavy payware fields) jake
  5. Vroute to make your route and the NGX' own FMC to enter and save it. Yes Yes. Make sure you install the Saitek drivers properly and get hold of FSUIPC. It will help. ? Don't really understand the question, but I think the answer is yes! No. It's like a big calculator  Watch the tutorial videos by Ryan and Kyle over in the NGX forum and have fun. She's a lovey bird. Only two jets I fly are from PMDG. They rule. best jake
  6. Me too. OPUS has nailed low-ceiling low-viz imo. The cam controller add-in is great too..ASE or REX textures are great I think..It's nice to have the choice. Totally agree with Simmerhead about the complexity. It's why I like OPUS' engine. Plug'n'go.
  7. Hey peeps, So, please move this if it should be in the grafx cards section but it's quite general and not tech-related, really. It's a heads-up to Titan owners who want to send the card back! I just bought a GTX Titan as detailed in this post. I spent about four hours last night, whilst watching my cricket team get humiliated by the Aussies, testing various scenarios, as I was about to start crying and throw away my whole rig and give up FSX for ever, I was that confused and disillusioned after spending what I could have bought a second-hand car with on a grafx card (draama!) I couldn't get rid of the stuttering no matter what I tried. I used all forms of cfg, both DX9 and DX10, v3 shaders no shaders, sliders up and down. Weather and no weather - Nada. This is not right, I told myself. I have a graphics card which can make coffee, what is going on? I looked logically at it. All my problems seemed to revolve around heavy autogen and clouds, but it seemed to make very little difference if I turned them down! Anywhere else and it was super-smooth. It was such a regular per-frame stutter that I thought something else is limiting this card. What could it be? Duh! What if, I thought, I was limiting the card by telling it to "slow down" using FR limits in FSX, so I set FR to unlimited. OMG! It worked! I was seeing between 26-37FPS everywhere Hmm, I thought..someone on another thread I can't find now talked about using external limiters, so I tried the one in NVI. Nothing. No difference. It still veered between 28-34. DXTORY has a limiter, I thought (and it is the best for vids imo). I fired that up and BANG!! I now get absolutely locked frames at 30FPS everywhere. Literally, everywhere. All sliders to the right. Full 4096 textures, hi-def planes like 777 and RealAir. So, if you have a Titan and it is underwhelming you - set it free! (it kicks a** in P3Dv2 as well ) best jake
  8. That about sums it up. Not sure conflict is the right word; a few ppl like the sound of their own voice (possibly me LOL) and a few ppl think they know it all. That's about the strength of it, really..Not "proper" trolling IMO. All life is here. If you don't like a post someone has written, or a reply, ignore it. Deprive people who just like to argue of 02. They'll soon get bored and go back to watching kids TV if nobody rises to them. Try Twitter for trolls. You'll come back to AVSIM thinking it's a bit like Sunday School LOL best jake
  9. Ok, so I just deleted my cfg file and with only HIGHMEMFIX=1 in the newly generated one I am seeing 8-11FPS taking off from CYVR in a Beech Duke Turbine. Something not right here...
  10. Hi, Thanks for the reply. Well, my sliders are maxed. I only lowered them to see if it made a difference and it doesn't seem to really, well, it does a bit but not what you'd expect. It makes no difference where they are, or if I use DX9 or DX10 it seems. I am beginning to suspect the drivers and Vsync. I have removed the ForceVsync lines from my cfg I've tried it with no NVI settings, Pauls recommended ones, the ones I saw at Word Not Allowed's site, a few variations of my own, nothing seems to make much difference. I am still experimenting.. best jake
  11. Hi all, Firstly, let me say I am not a frame-rate chaser. I am happy with 30fps, and happier with smooth. For the last year I have been running FSX on Windows 8 with a GTX580 with no more tweaking and 30fps pretty much all over the shop. Then I went and bought a GTX Titan. I did this for two reasons: firstly, I am a big P3d fan and it likes VRAM; secondly, I wanted to see if it made a difference in FSX. Boy does it make a difference. Until last night. Anyway, when I bought it, and as it was about a year and a half since I reinstalled FSX, I did a total removal and reinstall. Everything. Airports, sceneries and finally FSX itself. Three days later (really - only installing in the evenings) I was back. I have only installed all of my ORBX and FSDT stuff and RealAir and Carenado planes so far, so a pretty vanilla install. When I first fired it up, it was amazing. It wasn't the FPS, it was the smoothness of everything. A revelation (*cough - it should be for the $) I decided to run in DX10 as I figured it would tax the GPU a little more and perhaps allow for higher FPS (I know I said I wasn't an FPS chaser...) I am using Steve's fixer. All works fine. However, I now seem to have a marked stuttering problem in both DX9 and DX10. My frames are dropping to 15 (I use 1/2 rr in NVI) and it is struggling. Taking all sliders to 0 makes no difference so it seems to be something else. It is the same in P3d. It is like a stutter a frame, thereby dropping the fr to 15. It seems better with stock planes, but I am flying into CYVR atm, around Puget in the Carenado B200 and it is awful. Worse than my old GTX580 LOL Any ideas? I am using the latest R331 NVIDIA drivers. I have seen some stuff somewhere saying VSync is broken in that release. Can anyone conform this? Should I turn off Vsync and live with tearing until my 120Hz monitor arrives? I'm a bit stumped as it hasn't coincided with any particular tweak bar installing DX10 and using that (with its own NVI profile obvs) Many thanks in advance jake
  12. Is the FSDT site down for anyone else?
  13. !! Oh well I don't really _need_ SFX. I have FSX running very sweetly in DX10 anyway, and I know SweetFX works in 8.1 DX9 as I can make it work if I de-select DX10 preview. But in any case, thank you very much for all your help, Paul; also for the offer of a TViewer session. retired or not, it's big of you to effectively become someone's FSX engineer We support all of our geo-distant customers in this way also. It is a great boon to what we do (IT support) Many thanks and yes, DX10 is very, very good. I know I have a good system but I am now running FSX at max everything with no discernible lag/slow-down when using heavy planes or sceneries. Thanks for the help, and thanks to Steve for his hard work in figuring it all out, and then creating the tool best jake
  14. I'm confused now If that is the SFX DX10 injector, how does removing that help SweetFX to work? Surely that's the part of SFX that will be doing the injecting when running in DX10 mode? Also, one more thing I'm confused about; I thought AA had to be disabled within FSX to get SweetFX to run at all? Certainly in DX9 it won't run with AA enabled. Interestingly, when I leave the dxgi.dll in and get SFX running, I not only lose my DX10 tickbox, I also lose my AA tickbox. Somehow related, no doubt? Thanks for the teamviewer offer, Paul. That's very kind of you. I don't have a webcam or mic attached to my FSX PC (I don't do any live ATC flights) but I can use my hands to type! That'd be great. I'm a bit tied up right now, but when would be convenient for you? Shall I DM you? Thanks for all the help! One last thing: If the DX10 box is not there, but I have DX10=1 in my config, how do I know if DX10 is working or not? Will it just not work if that box is not there? How can I tell? best jake
  15. Ok, I followed the procedures to the letter. DX10 is definitely working with no SFX files in the root folder. I manually copied all of the *new* SFX files (1.51- all new config files etc) into the FSX root, and I have SFX working but again no DX10 preview tick-box! Just curious, Paul, the "fix" of removing the dxgi.dll file that you gave in the post I linked to to get the tickbox back is what actually stops SFX from loading in FSX; I know this as I have removed just that file and SFX will not load (but I get my DX10 tick-box back) Any ideas? Thanks! jake p.s it's great, after all these years of tweaking FSX to get it just the way I want it and finally doing so about a year ago, that there is a whole new world of tweaking now available to me
  16. Thanks for your speedy and helpful reply, Paul. I'll give that a go. I did think that the SweetFX Configurator did all of that when you added a game via its "add game" button - and conversely, it removes the SFX files when you choose "remove game" - I have added and removed FSX via this method and it did seem to replace dxgi.dll at least (I wasn't checking for the rest of the files) but I'll do a manual remove and re-add and see what gives. I am running SFX 1.3 as well, so I'll update all of it. Thanks again! jake
  17. EDIT (that n in the title is a typo; I don't have some dark, beta DX10 version, ok ) Hey all, Thought I'd see what the fuss was all about and I've encountered an odd problem, but one I know someone here will have a fix for. Ok, I have DX10 working. I have bought, run and configured the DX10Fixer. All is good, but... No SweetFX. Just won't load. So, I searched the forums and realised SFX needed to have AA un ticked in-game in FSX; I remove the tick and I can now select and run in DX10; bit jerky at the mo, but no tweaking yet. All good so far. To be on the safe side, I re-install SFX, configure using the SFX configurator GUI; go into FSX, and hey! No DX10 option, but in-game SFX now works. I search the forums again, and find this post where Paul helpfully suggests removing a single DLL (dxgi.dll) from the FSX folder, which I do. As soon as I do that, SweetFX no longer works! So, I can run DX9 with SFX DX10 with no SFX If I remove the file to allow the DX10 option to appear, it breaks SFX; if I leave the file in, it breaks DX10! Happy days! Any ideas, guys? If I have the line DX10=1 in the cfg but there is no option to select it in-game, is it still running? (a bit like the falling tree in an empty forest scenario) Many thanks jake
  18. LOL - is it that long now? XP9 was the last time I tried, and I thought the end product didn't justify the time. It's about worth imo. FSX' full install inc. all my ORBX and associated stuffs can take a whole day to reinstall, but FSX is worth it *cough* every six months
  19. What Ryan said ^^ And while I can see where you are coming from Dillon, I totally disagree with your rationale and predictions. FLIGHT was/is a totally diferent kelttle of fish for MS. It was/is a "new" direction in flight simming for them; less a sim, more of an easy-access title for the less nerdy. They invested a whole load of new $$ into it. As such it is still very much current IP; and I think that the code will be used at some point by someone for a "new" sim, but that's my opinion, nothing more. The FLIGHT/FSX conversation was done to death anyway so I'm not going there any more. They do still make money from selling FSX, even though it's "dead" code. When they finally make it EOL properly, I will continue to use it. If I can't activate it when I rebuild my PC, I will find a way around that. I can still install and use very old MS softs like Office 97 and 2000 (not that I'd want to but...) Personally, I really do think that we will be able to play it for years to come, new sims notwithstanding. As has been mentioned a few times, if it goes west, people will use cracked EXE's. Look at Falcon 4 as a marker for where FSX could be in a few years. Supported by the community, You really think MS will sue ppl who still want to use FSX years after it goes west? I hope for a new platform, similar in scope and execution to FSX, too, but I'm a pragmatist; I don't think there will be one on the horizon for a while. I hope I'm wrong, but who really knows? I'd never use XP because it just doesn't work for me. I don't like the UI, I don't like the way it works, and I don't like the limited (in comparison to FSX) support from the devs I like to buy my softs from. Anyway, each to their own. Mine is and will be FSX for some time to come. If that makes me a darwinian dead-end, so be it! best jake
  20. Here's a tip: If you don't want to spend $90 on it; don't buy it. It's worth whatever the creator wants it to be worth, and, as according to market forces, what ppl are willing to pay for it. Same as anything else you buy. Why come here and moan about it? The people here want to buy it or they wouldn't be here. Thanks for your time, Bye!
  21. When FSX goes proper abandonware, as has been said, ppl will still continue to use it. And TBH, I reckon MS will somehow just allow it to be installed, or they will just leave the auth servers up so ppl can still run it, OR as has been said, ppl will just use a cracked EXE. But, that day is a way away, I reckon. I'm not really sure what the point of your post is, Dillon, and I'm not knocking it, I just don't get what you are saying? Surely it's up to PMDG, ORBX and most importantly, US, if we want to continue investing in a "dead-end product". I have a lot of vintage music gear, that, every so ofteen, I have to spend hideous amounts of money to have serviced. Like £00's ech time. Some of this gear is from the 80's! (yes, I know that isn't very old) and hasn't been made since then. In fact, a few bits of gear are from companies that don't even exist anymore! But, I love them. That's the driver here for the end users. Love, not money As for the devs, it's been said: they make for FSX coz that's where their driver is. And I bet they all do it for love, too. Love because FSX is where we are all at! We make this hobby what it is, not MS! Anyway, I'll shut up now and continue putting my new studio back together just so I can get the PC running again and download the 777! Well done on the release, PMDG. I salute your patience! jake EDIT: I just bought the 777 and I don't even have a PC set up at the moment to put it on! There's love, right there!
  22. What mr340 says is the best way, I reckon. They are very helpful over on the Guru3D forums and the guy(s) who wrote and refined it are over there quite a lot. I'm a bit tied up at work today but try downloading and running the GUI and version 1.3 (I think I run this) of SweetFX, if you aren't already running it. I'll do some more testing tomorrow best jake
  23. It doesn't sound like it, no.I'm sure you've done everything right. I'm certainly no expert, but it just worked for me. Which version of SweetFX are you running? Have you tried using the GUI configurator? When FSX starts, you can turn SFX on and off ok?
  24. Don't mind us. We won't tell anyone. I'll shut up and wait.
