  1. That is a very good description of the appeal of the NGX. Do we get a choice of last flight before we die, because with 3 hours to go before dawn here in the UK, I can still get in a flight on the NGX. After that I'll put the blindfold on myself.
  2. Yep, that NGX is pure pleasure. I think she will remain my favourite for a while to come still. But I am sure PMDG will sort out the issues with the 777. So far, I have only had one minor issue with it, but working around it was so simple that it hardly merits a mention. When I read about some of the problems others are facing, I really consider myself somehow very fortunate to have dodged any major issues. That said, KQ 761 is cruising nicely on its way to HKJK, and after that arrives, it might be time for a Pegasus flight to EGSS. As you said, a blast every time.
  3. Do you mean the text input box for the topic heading? If so, that is actually a really good and practical idea.
  4. Craig, I think you and Kyle are misunderstanding my position. This has nothing to do with common courtesy. Kyle actually alluded to what my point of view is based on when he mentioned that people are given towards taking the easiest route when it comes to mental activity. Has neither of you ever wondered why that is? The British philosopher Bertrand Russell said that, most people will sooner die than think, in fact most people do. The scientific literature is filled with study after study that documents just how bad people are at thinking. In fact, there is even a name for it, coined by the Canadian scholar Keith Stanovich, dysrationalia. The reason that people are awful at thinking properly is biological, millions of years of evolution shaped our minds to take mental short cuts. Hell, your conscious mind doesn't even know what enters your unconscious mind, yet people base opinions on stuff fed to them by their unconscious minds. You cannot change this about people, no amount of chiding, scolding, encouragement, logic, evidence presentation, or whatever your preferred method is for getting people to think will work. We evolved lazy minds, because it served an evolutionary purpose. Sure, you can teach people logic, but do you know what they do with those skills? They use logic to better defend the positions they had previously adopted through bad reasoning. It makes it worse then. What Kyle is up against is human nature, and he can chide until he is blue in the face, people cannot change. That makes Kyle's approach essentially futile, and he is spending energy on a pursuit that will never be accomplished. He is, and so is everyone else, of course, free to carry on trying to change human nature, but it will accomplish nothing. It is not the lack of common courtesy that puzzles me, it is the futility of the pursuit. There is no logic in it. How, for example, would you explain the fact that there is a scientifically proven inverse correlation between confidence and being right. The more confident a person is, the more often they are wrong about what they believe. Or, what about the fact that judges hand down more lenient sentences for similar crimes based purely on the mitigating circumstances of a full stomach. People are irrational, nothing will change that.
  5. Kyle, can you honestly tell me that you can think of no reason whatsoever for why someone might not read the manual for something other than lack of initiative? None whatsoever? Because I refuse to accept that you would be so narrow minded. And no, I am not trying to be difficult, there is merit in thinking the opposite, seeing things from a point of view not your own (after all, in science we try to disprove our hypotheses, since you can basically prove just about anything if you use only confirmation), and we accept a theory as true when it not only explains what we see in front of us, but also explains why other competing explanations are wrong. So, apologies for not taking you at your word, it is not personal, it sort of comes with the job. And yes, I did notice how I asked you to find the statistics to back up your claim, I don't want to prove my point to you, I want you to prove your point to me. Where is the logic in accepting someone's claim without evidence? And, not meaning to be rude, but do you have some stats on which you base your claim, or what is it derived from? Apologies for the bits and pieces response, but I am a little pressed for time.
  6. Can true support not be provided in a repeat question? I have seen that done on numerous occasions. I have benefitted from that on numerous occasions as well, since I was brought to that repeat question through performing a search. And if every topic can be found through the AVSIM search function or through Google, then how can any true support post really disappear, would they not still show up through a search as you advocate users to do? In which case, does it really matter, other than for reasons of bandwidth as Kyle mentioned, if people repeat a question or a topic?
  7. Kyle, you raise some interesting points, a few of which I am not sold on. You say that without chiding, people will not learn to do their homework. This assumes that chiding is either the only or the most effective way of encouraging people do 'their homework'. This is not my understanding of how the human mind works, particularly given the myriad emotional responses that result from being chided, a good few of which will actually produce results counter to what you wish to achieve. And that is before we touch on phenomena such as cognitive dissonance or confirmation bias, both of which are totally immune to chiding, and may in fact end up reinforcing the chided person's belief that what they did was right. Plenty of examples of that in the scientific literature. The part about limited bandwidth is a more valid point because that is not subjective. Calling people lazy because they didn't do a search on AVSIM or Google regarding a simulator hobby is going to be difficult to defend logically, given that you have no additional information about those persons available regarding how they approach other topics on which they need information. The chances that you are right about a person being lazy based on a single act on a hobby forum has, as with all other conclusions drawn from meagre samples, a very low statistical probability of being accurate. Regarding whether we want to make this forum a place where the same topics are discussed over and over again, well, I think that again is a statement that can be called into question. Simply, take the number of repeat questions or subjects and divide that by the number of new or unique questions and subjects and that will give you an indication of how this forum is utilized. In my few years on here, the ratio is certainly more in favour of new or unique topics in higher numbers against repeat questions and topics. However, if you can provide me with numbers showing the opposite, I am not going to argue against it. Even so, there are plenty of people who are willing to answer those questions again, and also people who answer the question for the first time. If we are to chide people for repeating questions that have been asked previously, what are we to make of people who are willing to answer those questions again without impatience or irritation? For as long as there are people who are willing to answer repeat questions, there will always be a good reason to ask something that has been asked before, which makes it essentially futile to try and chide people for doing something that will get a result. Unless we start chiding people for answering repeat questions as well. And as for Albert Einstein, well, would you ask him a question based on what you think is something not easy to answer, or on what he thinks is not easy to answer? And if it is the latter, how exactly would you know what his standard is without being as knowledgeable about physics and as smart as he is?
  8. Oh, yes, I only have one livery for the JS4100, which is the South African Airlink one, but I also like getting that one out from time to time for some trips into smaller South African airports. And she still provides a lot of enjoyment. The guys over at Aeroworx have done some amazing airports for South Africa, perfect for the JS4100. And the only reason I am no longer using the LevelD 767 is because it doesn't work on Windows 8.
  9. Not a chance, my entire FSX set up is populated with add on airports for NGX flights. I'm currently doing my first proper 777-300ER flight in the Kenya Airways livery, and she is a thing of beauty, but the NGX remains my favourite plane to fly.
  10. I really don't want any program collecting data on what I am doing and uploading it to anywhere for anyone to view. If such a feature is ever considered, I would hope that it comes with a very clearly indicated disable this function button. Or better yet, an option to not even install it.
  11. My regard for A2A just keeps going up. I picked up the Cherokee last week, and, wow. And now this comes along. I'm very happy to support these guys.
  12. Well, I was clearing out my study tonight and found £50 in an envelope from some bygone Christmas, so, essentially, the 300ER is now free for me in the form of a Christmas present from Uncle or Aunt Whoever.
  13. I have been running the PMDG 747 for over a year now on Windows 8, and recently on Windows 8.1 without any problems of any kind. FSX is installed on its own dedicated drive, and everything else regarding installation was done following the AVSIM installation guide. I understand that people do have problems with Windows 8 and FSX, but, for whatever reason, I have been fortunate to escape any such issues ... So far.
  14. Btw, I'm just wondering if anyone who has using ASN today did not experienced this problem? Nine people have posted about having this problem (10 if we count the German), I can't imagine that only ten people used ASN today.
  15. No, I haven't submitted a support ticket, I had a look online, but the only thing I found related to it was someone complaining about the same thing on a German forum. So, support ticket it is. Supported Ticket submitted.
  16. This has now happened a second time on the same flight, and unlike the first time, I cannot get ASN to reconnect to live weather mode. The exact message reads as follows: Problem with Data Too many data reports are being ignored due to their date/time stamp being too old. Please check your computer clock - it may be set into the future. Active Sky Cannot function properly. Resetting MANUAL offline mode and shutting down. Which has now done four times in a row. I have checked the time on the computer settings, and it is definitely not set into the future, so I'll rule that option out on my end.
  17. I had the same problem at exactly the same time. After clicking ok on the ASN message, FSX was minimised and it took some persuading through Task Manager to get FSX back up, but the flight is still going now and I have had no further issues. ASN showed that it was on historical weather, but I reset it back to Live Weather mode and it resumed normal functions after downloading live weather. No issues since then. I am doing OMDB to EGLL in the PMDG 777-200LR.
  18. Kenny, do you stick to Delta for other aircraft as well, such as the 777, if you have it? I know the feeling, I had to do a count as well today before starting the topic because I just wasn't sure. Now that I am sure, I am wondering whether I shouldn't cut it down a bit. But I recently bought a few US airports and I have no US airline liveries, maybe I'll do a few swaps. Worst of all is, of the 40 liveries that I have installed, there are an additional 68 zipped up on my external hard drive. Not bad for a plane I thought I would skip. I have to say, Kyle, I was a bit surprised to read that you mentioned you prefer the 737 over the 777 in that thread about choosing between the 737 and the 777, but after reading your comments here about how you use FSX, it makes sense. But as Daniel said, it's a big world out there, and I am sure that sooner rather than later you will get to know European regulations as well as you do American ones, and we will see you zipping across the skies of Europe in an Air Berlin 737 going to LEPA. Or maybe a Pegasus one going to Bodrum, Turkey. Now there is a place worth going to. And off topic, how many languages do you speak? Norwegian, German, English, and ...? Sebastian, that is truly impressive, I wonder whether you hold the record for most liveries. Just your 900's are almost equal to the total number of liveries I have. How do you decide which one to use? I love flying over Europe, though I never use VATSIM, I tend not to talk to ATC from the moment they hand me off after departure till the point where I need to find out which runway I am supposed to head to. With regards to destinations, I choose ones which I have been to, and have bought pay ware scenery for those airports, or ones that I bought scenery for purely because it is in Europe somewhere. One of my favourites is Palma de Mallorca, which is where I spent last proper weekend break away. I have most of UK2000's airports, and given that EGSS (Stansted) is just up the road from me, that is the airport I fly from the most on FSX. I've also built up a considerable freeware airport list for mostly eastern Europe. At this point in time, British members will be thinking Ryanair ... and they would be right. I didn't know any of those liveries existed for the FS9 version, I am having tough time as it is choosing among contemporary ones. But when I still used the JF 747-200/300, I spent hours at a time looking for old liveries for those aircraft. There are days that I miss that plane.
  19. That's pretty much the way I do it as well. I recently took a USAF VIP 737-700 from Hong Kong to Cuba via Diego Garcia and Accra, but that mostly to see whether I could do an 11 hour flight with that plane. Short answer is, yes you can, with full fuel, 3.1% load and CI 0. I also like to fly routes that I have done on the relevant airline, but where that the airline isn't option, I would choose one that flies the route. So, no, no nerd calling here ... Unless it is meant as a compliment.
  20. Some fascinating responses here, I'll have a proper read through it when I get home tonight. I'm curious about how you guys go about selecting a flight. Do you choose airline first and then departure and arrival airport or the other way round? Or some other way?
  21. Recently I had to do a clean install of FSX after having had to reset my computer to factory settings. Naturally, installing all the scenery files took the most time as most of those have to be done manually, followed by installing the liveries for the 737NGX. This made me wonder whether I may have too many liveries for what is my favourite plane, compared to one for the 777, one for the Jetstream and five for the 747 400X. That made me wonder whether I am nuts, which made me wonder how many liveries other users of the 737NGX have installed, and have you used all of them, or are there a few on there for just in case?
  22. Ha! You can't torture me with screenshots of this livery, I am aching for the *script corrupted* livery. Until screenshots of that one is posted, I just keep reminding myself of the line from the Matrix, there is no 777-300ER .
  23. Well, how does the old saying go, I can resist anything except temptation. I just bought KDEN, KIAD and KPHX. Thanks, Stu, for bringing this to my attention.
  24. We don't fall off the earth because we are issued with special gravity enhancing boots at birth. It's not unlike the thermal underwear that people in Europe wear in winter . Being the well traveled guy that Santa is, he probably won't be surprised to learn that he actually traces his origin to a place in northern Arabia which once went by the name of Tiamen. Of course, it's slightly more complicated than that, but that is the joy of history.
  25. When I was in Australia in 2007, I bought a delightfully cheeky map of the world that had the Southern Hemisphere at the top with the Northern Hemisphere at the bottom. As for dealing with the absence of snow in December, some people spray artificial snow over their Christmas trees. But since this is mostly done for the amusement of children, it's really not a big deal. The people I know mostly associated Christmas with going to some beach town to get away from it all. Since moving to the UK, I've come to appreciate the appeal of going to the beach over Decembers.
