  2. Re: Joystick I do not consider myself a hardcore flight sim realist, but I have been into sims since the subLogic days. I mostly fly for fun these days, when I'm not working, I'm running a VA, and with what time remains I run everything from FSX to Rise of Flight to all of the DCS series. In terms of hardware, I use a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick. It's got a throttle, the handle twists to act as your rudder pedals, and there are 12 programmable buttons you can setup to act as common commands (but I haven't even done that). Just did a quick search on Best Buy website, and it's listed at $34.99. There are scores of more realistic options out there, but I 1) didn't want to spend the funds for the yoke, throttle controls, and rudder pedals, 2) this is much simpler to get setup when I get to fly (my flight sim PC shares a desk with my work desktop and my work laptop, so having to tear down / setup all that hardware if I want to catch a quick flight really isn't an option).

  5. Great Lakes Express, the Internet's original regional VA and one of the longest running Virtual Airlines in existence announces a change of leadership and revamp to it's operations. Management of Great Lakes Express has passed from Paul Herman to James Kohan. James Kohan is the founder and original Managing Director of Great Lakes Express, having launched the regional carrier in January 1997. Paul Herman managed GLE from 2009 until the handover, and his management and care of the airline, particularly in the website and automation provided by VAFS, is greatly appreciated. An award winning airline, as part of the revamp Great Lakes Express is returning to it's roots, operating in the Great Lakes region of the United States. Initial operations are based out of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (KCLE) and offers 51 flights utilizing it's 7 wholly owned Beechcraft 1900D airframes. Financially, GLE is on solid ground, with Gross Revenue of $508,111,954.25, Net Revenue of $364,365,460.88, Cash Assets of $213,525,054.36, and Net Worth of $239,488,783.93. Polls and Discussions are now underway in terms of the next hub and airframe GLE will add to it operations. In keeping with the regional concept, our next hub will be in the Great Lakes region, and our next airframe will be a turboprop of jet, with a maximum seating capacity of 70 to 80 seats. As part of the team concept, comments and suggestions are welcome from any member of the GLE family. This is most definitely not leadership in a vacuum. If you are interested in flying for a regional VA, with the average flight time of 1 hour or less, please take the opportunity to visit us at Great Lakes Express. 6. Thank you, samtx. Just bought a backup. Heads up, they limit you to 1 copy per order, but don't prevent multiple orders (I wanted a backup copy, Son #1 finally wants to try Dad's "flying game")
  7. Re: Acceleration activation, Not that this is happening to you, but in the past I've seen (at times, not always) that if you install FSX, install Acceleration, then launch and activate, it will only prompt for the FSX keys, and you won't see the Acceleration activation window. Just upgraded to Windows 8 / new HDDs, and last night I re-installed FSX, launched and activated, then did a short flight, exited, installed Acceleration, launched and activated, and did a longer flight. All worked as expected. I would uninstall Acceleration, reinstall, and see if the activation window appears on launch.
  8. Zicheng, My (former) CD version of the Flight1 ATR 72-500 is all packaged up and will be posted to you shortly. Hope you enjoy it, I'm happy someone can make use of it, and wife's happy to get another piece of my Flight Sim hobby out of the house. Now that I've cleared a spot on the FS Add-On shelf think I'm going to have to re-fill that spot! Jim (kohanjj)
  9. I have a CD version of the Flight1 ATR 72-500 that I simply don't use (haven't used for years, honestly) that I'd be willing to part with. I have an EMB-120, FFS Saab 340 and PMDG J-41 that get all my twin turboprop time. It's the FS9 version but will run in FSX with the Flight1 supplied patch/upgrade being applied. PM me your details and I can post it to you. Jim (kohanjj)
  10. Been using the Blueprint Simulations KJFK for a little while, and am pleased. Depending on the rig you run it can take a hit on the FPS count, but lots to see. Have all of their Eastern US scenery and for the money, think they're worth the buy. Fair warning, you are missing out on some of the dynamic stuff, but that's never been a bother to me. More info at http://www.blueprintsimulations.com/BluePrint_KJFK.html
  11. Flying solo as well - been into some flavor of flight sims since ~ 1990, and as long as I can remember, it's been a solo sport in terms of face-to-face contacts.Have met many good friends over the years thru the VAs. Both sons (15 and 11) could care less, and even last night, when I showed the wife our house in some scenery I created with FSET, she was patiently waiting to move on. Do have to admit the family is very patient with the hobbies, though, so I can not complain.
  12. Beautiful work. Is that a POSKY model? Been flying AirTran out of CAK regularly on work travel this year, we'll miss them around here as well.
  13. I'm right there with you! Just got back into the the VA scene (I started Great Lakes Express back in 1997, it's gone through a couple owners since then), and when I went to fly one of my routes yesterday in the Embraer 170, had an "aw crud" moment when the default GPS wasn't available. Created an FSX flight plan, and figured out how to load it into the FMS, but like you, that's one of my goals for this year is to get comfortable with the FMS. Other than the NGX products (which I don't own) I see a lot of tutorials mentioned - any one better than the others?
  14. One of the things I've found with Windows 7 is that they keep the Program Files and Program Files (x86) directories locked down pretty tightly to prevent any viruses, spyware, trojans, etc., from installing themselves and wreaking havoc on your system. When I initially installed FSX on my Win7 computer, I was lazy and used the defaults, and had issues similar to yours. I then removed FSX from, and installed it directly to a C:\FSX\ directory, and many of my problems immediately disappeared. Added benefit of being higher up in the directory tree, so it was easier to browse to when adding aircraft, scenery, etc. If you're FSX install is mature, and don't want to move things, another thing you might try is to run the World of AI installer as Administrator (right-click on the installer, select Run As Administrator) - that might give you the extra permissions that you are needed (or at least that the above error is barking about). One of my first AVSIM forum posts, I hope I was able to help. Jim
  15. Having been a lurker for many moons here on AVSIM forums this is my first post. Started out flight sims on the Commodore 64, eventually moved through all of them, still have many of them sitting here on the shelves of the office. Currently have FS9, FSX, Flight, A-10, and all the 1st Gen Third Wire sims installed (albeit not used) Overall, love flight for what (at least I) consider it to be, a great easy way to log some sim time, with few complications and the ability to enjoy some excellent scenery. I have purchased all the DLC so far, cockpits or not. Am wondering if anyone has info on the pending release of Alaska, given that spring has now officially "sprung" and we're into summer. The last I heard, Alaska was to be released "Spring of 2012" Anyone know of an expected release date? Hope everyone enjoys their sim(s) of choice and ignore the ones that aren't their cup of tea. Jim
