  1. Five more pictures. Hope you enjoy. I went over my limit for the thread so they are only links.http://img546.images...12319215429.jpghttp://img19.imagesh...31921318873.jpghttp://img600.images...18235237689.jpghttp://img191.images...18234312971.jpghttp://img542.images...31903454959.jpg
  2. Great session guys. Crosswind landing practice on a dirt runway at the end was especially fun. Anyone who hasn't joined us yet is urged to. We have a great time. Were are some (a bunch) of pictures from this evening's session.Kal is slowKal is really slowAlways slipping because kal is so slowRevenge - I actually bounced off his plane and landed fine :(More Revenge - Surprisingly, Here I also just bounced off his plane and landed right in front of himThanx Kal for always organizing this event for us. It's very fun for everyone!
  3. I am currently taking flying lessons so I think I have a very good understanding of what flight can do for learning the basics. I think that the total realism isn't required for someone training for their private. What I find useful is that I can practice with others online It's easier to get into and to get going It is realistic enough to help prevent myself from "unlearning" what I've already learned between lessons It is perfect for practicing maneuvers. Not for the realism of the actual maneuver but for the processes that go into getting into, performing, and exiting a maneuver Basic IFR and VFR I also use FSX for practicing the actual requesites of maneuvers and realism of flying out of my airport. But I only do this when I have more time and when I have the mental capacity to do so after working 10-12 hours a day. FSX is also great for cross country practice.Ultimately if you take everything for what it is in MS Flight and pretend it's real then I agree, there will be a negative transfer of learning. If you know what's realistic and what isn't I don't think that's the case.
  4. Thats exactly why I was practicing yesterday. To do better on that challenge :PUnfortunately the challenge starts you a bit further from the airport than i'd like so I found it quicker to just setup some high wind and practice in free flight. Ultimately the session was to practice crabbing during final and transitioning into slipping once you get the airplane over the runway.A reasonably good explaination is http://www.ehow.com/...-crosswind.htmlp.s. Nobody joined me last night :(
  5. Tonight I'm setting the wind high and just doing touch and gos by myself to practice a bit with crosswinds. If anyone wants to join me just add my to XBL. My gamertag is GUCommander. I'll be starting now and playing for about an hr or two.
  6. I have been passionate about flying since...maybe 5 years old. It has always been something i've wanted to do and, for the most part, no day went by since as early as I can remember where I didn't think about flying or something related to it. Fast forward to today. I'm 26, have a good paying job, a fiance, and 2 kids. I am at the point in my career (and life) where I can afford to take flying lessons.I do a 1.5 hour lesson once a week (weather permitted). 1hr flight time and 30 mins with instructor before and after the flight. I am about 7 hours into it now and things are going great. I am one of the fastest learning students my instructor has ever had and thats because I do a few things (which I'll outline at the end of the thread) to maintain what I learn and expand my knowledge every day. I feel that if I took lessons every 2 weeks what I do would work well also. If it was a lesson once a month then I'm not sure how well it would work.Ultimately you need to have the finances and/or be passionate about flying. If you're passionate enough then you'll get a second job or a loan to pay for flying lessons. If you're not then you probably should just save up money and wait a while before continuing your lessons. What I do between lessons: Read any material I can get my hands on for 1hr a day. So for this has included a few books (Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, Student Pilot Handbook (flight maneuvers and training syllabus), some FAA documents, flash cards and documents I've made from flight lessons and reading materials, and my aircraft's PoH). Flight sim either in FSX or even Microsoft Flight just to stay acclimated to the concepts of flying a plane. it doesn't feel the same...but it does the trick. I practice maneuvers, touch and gos, or just have a fun flight. I listen to my ATC tower at least an hr or two a day while at work. For my area, radio work is one of the biggest barriers to entry. Have a Saturday or Sunday 6-8 hour "study session". This session includes all of the above plus watching Test Prep DVDs (I have Private Pilot Virtual Test Prep on DVD), and documents that i've created based on flight lessons. Fly cheap terrible indoor R/C helicopters for fun. It helps because you need to maintain smooth and gradual controls.
  7. Hey Bud, Any flights planned for saturday or sunday?
  8. All aircraft have a max tested crosswind landing. That doesn't mean that the plane is actually limited to that number. It just means that during official development, testing, certifications, etc that is the max safe crosswind speed that they landed the plane at.If you're low on fuel and may not make it to the next airport then this scenario is definitely plausible and safer than just trying to get to the next airport without enough fuel.it definitely should be #6 though....not #2.
  9. Was a fun time! We'll get better at our coordinated landings :(
  10. I would say it's the natural left-turning tendency of airplanes but you're experiencing right-turning tendency...which is quite strange :PIt's gota be something wrong with your controls or settings. Maybe you have some rudder trim. Maybe theres some other controller connected to your computer thats adding some unforeseen controller input.
  11. Hey oracle,I am definitely going to check out Pilot Edge. Paying for help with the radio will likely be cheaper than the average 10-15 hours extra New York pilots need to fly before they get their license due to complicated radio and airspace.I am only 6 hours into my training. I have already successfully executed steep turns, power on/off stalls, slow flight, emergency engine out procedure, s turns, turns around a point, maneuvering through the traffic pattern, and a successful (albeit rough) landing. I still have lots of practice to do on the maneuvers and even more to learn but I am definitely moving at a brisk pace.
  12. Last night was lots of fun. I'll post my pictures later.I wish MS Flight didn't save images in BMP format...
  13. I need to practice all maneuvers as many times as I can while teaching others and learning from others. A typical flight lesson (in real life) is go through each maneuver once or twice. More than that is unnecessary and can be counter productive. This means over time all maneuvers get done a bunch of times but in one session it's mostly just going over each maneuver and practicing it a few times. The only exception would be if we wanted to get a traffic pattern going for touch and gos. That would be repetitive (but fun if you're into it).
  14. I fly a cirrus sr20 which is a "modern composite airplane" and it certainly doesn't come close to reacting like that. Again though, I've never flown an RV6 so i wouldn't truly know how the plane flies. It just feels....wrong.
  15. I think the inclusion of multiple planes that do exist is some indication of intent, especially when the order is mixed (it isn't just all available planes on the left then he added random crap at the end of the plane list). Twin otter might also make sense in Alaska so maybe we'll see that appear in the Alaskan DLC. I have no doubt that they will do exactly what they did with Hawaii. Release the content pack with 1 (or a few) planes + a few additional planes to be purchased.
  16. My favorite plane is the RV6 but I'm starting to really get into the Maul.Landing an RV6 just seems a bit....off to me. The thing seems to maintain speed in a rather unrealistic way, even with flaps at 100%.
  17. Hello Everyone,While Microsoft Flight is not the most realistic flight sim experience out there I find it to be quite adequate for practicing most flight maneuvers that are required to get a private pilots license. I am currently taking lessons and I try to use flight at least 2 hours a day on weekdays and 2-4 on weekends.I am curious if there are any other student pilots or MS Flight players who would be interested in reviewing and practicing maneuvers (and other essential piloting skills) together. We could take turns going over the maneuver, doing them together, and self-critiquing what we did wrong and discuss (as a group) how to improve.Anyone who is currently a student pilot or is thinking of starting their training could learn a lot from each other. I am very eager to learn from anyone who has knowledge to offer and I feel like a lot of student pilots are the same way. Doing this together will help us all learn, help with motivation, potentially save some money, and ultimately make us all better pilots.I am typically on during the nights. (2 hrs sometime between 8 and midnight est). My gamertag is gucommander. Post in this thread and add me on XBL if your interested. If there is sufficient interest I will start setting up "official events" for this.Maneuvers we would be practicing: Pre-maneuver checklist Steep Turns Power on Stall Power off Stall Slow Flight S Turns Turns around a Point Rectangular Course (I just practice this while doing touch and gos in the traffic pattern) Essential Flight Skills Normal and Crosswind takeoffs and landings Emergency Engine Out Procedures Traffic Patterns Radio (I would LOVE someone to practice the radio with...) Night Flying Basic Instruments Maintaining Straight and Level flight (Altitude is a I TRIED TO USE A PROFANITY HERE - AREN'T I STUPID! even with trim...) Cross Country Flights (Includes flight planning and VOR) Taxiing (This ones a bit hard due to the issues with breaking in MS Flight. i'm sure they will be fixed eventually)
  18. I agree. The RV6, missions, challenges, extra jobs, paint jobs, aerocaches, etc is a ton of content (all of which I am eating up) for $20. My typical game purchase is $60 for 10-15 hours of gameplay. Then $10 for 1-3 hours of gameplay. Free game + $20 for 20+ hours of gameplay is a steal for me.Not to mention (despite everyone's inaccurate criticism of the game's realism) I have, to my flight instructor's admission, definitely saved money by practicing maneuvers, traffic patterns, and landings in Microsoft Flight. As far as realism goes, the game has a long way to go (mostly with bugs and missing features), but it's much better than most give it credit for. Also, most who say it's not realistic base that assumption on other unrealistic experiences such as FSX. Sorry....but until you actually fly a plane a few times you don't really have a clue about what realistic actually is :)
