Thanks for the reply Jim. I have tried reducing the Max Viz & it just brings the straight line closer. The thing that's vexing me is the problem seems to have appeared from outa the blue, a week ago FS was fine.. Looks like a format is on the way coz I can't put up with this.Cheers again Jim.

Hi Nigel,Don't format the computer, not needed. Be sure when you change option in asv, you click save and close button, and you must close asv fisrt and fs2004, the re-start asv. Try to change some sky set? ThanksChris WillisHiFi Simulation Software Team Developerhttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_dev_team.jpg http://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_proud_supporter.jpg

Hi Jim,I have tried changing the Max Viz both in ASV, FS & FSUIPC and all I get is the line moving closer. I'm currently using the 512 x 512 cloud set, I've tried the 64 x 64 & also reinstalled the 512 set to make sure nothing had gone corrupt.Cheers for your continued help Jim.

I see this from time to time as well. It seems to come and go and reinstalling FlightSim and your addons will probably not be a permanent fix. It seems to be a combination of weather/system settings that causes it.I've come to accept it as another limitation of FS that will hopefully be addressed in Microsoft's next offering.

I have recently noticed this problem too (since installing 320) it has only happened on CAVOK sort of flights - I suppose where there is cloud it obscures the horizon. It is really annoying, as it harks back to Flight Sims of old, where you would have a line dividing Air from Ground, which never happens in real world flying!I will have a play and see if I can make it better or worse!Neil

I'd be interested to know what you come up with Neil, I have tried just about everything in the way of settings in ASV, FS & a fully registered version of FSUIPC and the best I can do is make the situation worse.I did find a "display.cfg" hack that cures this problem when it occurs with the ATI Radeon cards, but that doesn't work with the Nvidia chipset, or at least not on my system. :( Cheers for your help.

Tell me more about the ATi hack ;-)I have a 850 card and would love to see if I could remove this problem!I tried various settings, but as you say, at best things get worse. The only time it is ok is at low level in haze and if there are clouds obscruring the horizon.

I googled this and it amounts to adding TableFog=0 in the appropriate part of display.cfg.I tried entering it into ATI Radeon Win2k/XP area and it did not work.[suggested in one post]Others suggest entering into the section under one's card name. But there is no entry for our ATI 850 card, so this solution did not work for me.Anyone else know how to do it for ATI 850?Greg

Greg Clark

Greg hit it on the head there. I found the same supposed fix on one of the AVSIM forums but it did nothing for my GeFource card. Having said that there were people that claimed it had cured the problem for them. Here is how the ATI Radeon section of your display.cfg would look with the extra line included.;----------------------------------------------------------------------; ATI Radeon Win2k/XP;----------------------------------------------------------------------[ati2dvag.dll]Disable=1TableFog=0PanelAsTexture=0AntiAlias=0[ati2dvag.dll.1]MinDriverRev=5.13.01.3102Disable=2[ati2dvag.dll.2]MinDriverRev=6.14.0001.6307PanelAsTexture=2As far as the NVIDIA chips go I have found nothing that works so I have resigned myself to some hardware upgrading and a complete reinstall on the FS box - HoHum

I'm not sure about this but I've heard that if you delete (or rename) display.cfg, FS9 will generate a new one with default/optimum values. Is that true?

Well FS runs fine if you delete the "display.cfg" file. It does not recreate it & worst of all it does nothing for solving the problem..

I can get rid of this horizon line by NOT using visibility smoothing in either FSUIPC or ASV. I then set visiblity limits in FSUIPC to 3000 MAX. If the visibility limit is higher than 3000 ft (whether clear, clouding, overcast, or rainy in FSUIPC fields), then I get this horizon "line". However, I personally prefer FSUIPC visiliby smoothing because I can set max visibility of around 5000 ft (and hence the horizon "line") to kick in only at high altitudes, around FL 250 where the air should be less hazy.

I get the same results with the same settings.. Weird.I never suffered with this until a few weeks ago and it's driving me nutz now. I have completely reinstalled FS and my most important add-ons, cleaned all the registry entries out dumped all the folders that remained after the uninstalls and installed to a different directory and the problem still remains..!!Question - Could this be an issue with the NVIDIA drivers on my system? I have tried several versions from the latest to antique and no change, but could it be something rubbished in the registry I wonder? Thoughts anyone?

Hi,Settings: ASV max vis set at default 59sm.And: FS with sight distance at 60SM:http://sales.hifisim.com/pub-download/test-60sm.jpgWith FS sigh distance at 140SM:http://sales.hifisim.com/pub-download/test-140sm.jpgDid some other tests, and the horizon line gets sharp at about 100sm sight distance. The 140SM sight distance shot looks a lot like your "problem" shot, however there is a bit of terrain out there to make it a little more believable. When the terrain is flat the effect is admittedly a bit lacking.. there should be more blending in colors in the areas just above and below the sharp horizon line. Conclusion: This is how FS9 renders higher visibility (after all, high visibility is supposed to yield a sharp horizon), and why we like to limit things down the the 60sm area when going for visual smoothness and blending in the horizon. Do you get the same results? What is your sight distance set at in those screen shots?Best,

Damian Clark
