BFG 9800GX2, I got one.

Featured Replies

Yes, its true, 9800GX2 video cards haven't been put on store shelves yet....until tomorrow !! The one I got is the overclocked edition with a memory clock speed of a whopping 2gb/s !!!!I got mine today, paid $750 Cnd. (Price of card plus bribing store manager)I finished installing it 4 hours ago, then flew FSX with Tileproxy for that 3 hours. Yesterday, I also purchased a Core2 Extreme QX9650 Quad Core 3.0GHz 12MB/1333FSB, but couldn't install the video card untl BFG gave the go ahead for me to purchase it as they don't like sales prior to release date. If I didn't bribe the manager, I would of had to wait till tomorrow.Anyways, my point is, with this hardware, I have All settings, including extreme downloaded weather, in FSX w/Tileproxy cranked to the max. Blurries in FSX w/ Tileproxy...GONE !!! Amazing frame rates and most important, the clarity/sharpness. The clarity/sharpness was so amazing my wife took a look and thought it was of my videos taken from when I got my pilot's license. If you got the bucks, get this hardware and you won't need to get upset with the makers of FSX anymore. Finally, the frustration with FSX is gone for me. And a lesson learn't for me for the future releases of flight simulators. WAIT 18 MONTHS TO 2 YEARS after the release of any flight sim software. Especially, after this experience with FSX, I will never, ever trust a flight sim creator/company ever again !!!

Jim,Congrats on your new card.Have you tried the DX10 preview and does your new 9800GX2 show the zbuffer related texture clipping evident in the following youtube video when operating in the dx10 preview mode?

Whilst the result you have is impressive, in my experience I beleive it is far more likely the CPU was reason for your massive performance boost and blurry reduction, with the video card mainly improving the clarity/sharpness side of things. What video card / CPU did you have before? Gary

Tomshardware stated after a short review with FSX that there is only a marginal benefit against the 8800GTX Ultra. It seems that in very high resolutions with AA/AF that the 8800GTX performed better...and still NO DX10.1Just to inform,Happy landings...

How many frames were you able obtain on average with the settings you were using - on the ground and in the air flying over a pretty large city, and even or land with no city structure?

Well I installed this card four days ago updated to the latest drivers and the framerates have actually dropped considerably using FSX whereas I was getting 10-15 at Heathrow (aerosoft add on) with Traffic X on 90% and Horizon scenery and Active Sky X, I now only get 3-5 and subsequently it has made the sim very very jerky and quite frankly unplayable!I shall be returning to my 8800GTX Ultra pretty sharpish.I might add that everything else has shot up PCMARK 06 / PCMARK Advantage and even Crysis is pretty playable on High settings @ 1920x1200 on my Dell 30" Panel but FSX Noooooo!!!Nvidia / someone please explain? CPU: Intel Quafcore E6850 (overclocked to 3.33Gz)2 x 150 GB Raptors 1 x Samsung F1 750GBAsus P5W DH Deluxe MotherboardCreative SB X-Fi Gamer

With the FPS slider all the way to the right, set to unlimited, my FPS fluctuates between 60 to 130 fps.

>With the FPS slider all the way to the right, set to>unlimited, my FPS fluctuates between 60 to 130 fps. Does the FSX menu lock up anywhere? Any FSX lockups in general?

No no lock-ups at all and with thslider on unlimited framerates still bounce between 2-30 (very unstable). tested at Heathrow with avsim add on and all the above add ons!

Re-installed the GTX 8800 Ultra and guess what..all my frame rates are back to normal i.e. 20-30 at Heathrow with all of the above add ons and an average of 60 elsewhere. So it looks like the 9800GX2 is going straight back to the store!

Hahahaha you got ripped BIG time. I can literally drive 5 minutes and get to Memory Express and get one for $569. But "ooooooo" you had one a few hours before any other uber geek on your block. The card is a waste of time for FSX, and if you're gonna spend that kind of money, why not go all out instead of getting second best?http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX20293(ME).aspx

Well... the card cost me the equivalant of $625 in the UK (where everything costs more)?? And if you have a read of the review on "Tom's Hardware" you will see that the card is actually "WORSE" at the high resolution of my monitor 2560 x 1600 than the 8800GTX Ultra.FSX is primarily CPU based and so although the 9800 GX2 is supposedly the "fastest Card" out it is not the best for FSX.P.S. The store took the card back and refunded me the full cost less the return postage!
