So this edit is only for people with high end systems? ie - it would have no benefit for me?
Try and see... it works nicely for me with a "mainstream system".. [email protected] us "overclockers", it has the added benefit of throttling the CPU so it takessome of the heat load off the processor. I've upped my clock from 3.0 to 3.2and have no heat issues with stock cooling (mind you, it is winter..) :(

Is it normal to still see FPS fluctuation in the 50-ish (sometimes 60-ish)?I have set mine to 30 default and it did stay in the 28~32ish MOST of the time, but in short bursts it can swing to the high region (50ish, 60ish). There is no noticeable effect in the motion though and no stutters too. Before this app, FPS UNLIMITED can fluctuate to as high as 100+ for me... and too much stutters.:)
I have the exact same behavior, so I guess it is "normal".. :(

OMG Sarg & Nick!@Thank you Thank you Thank you, and of course Nick too!
Noel,Excellent news!!! I'm glad you finally got the poolsize dialed in and working.

useful and interesting post will try out tonight on my I7 system and post resultsthanks to OP and all whom contributed :(

The idiom: "hiding one's light under a bushel" springs to mind. How many others out there, I wonder.
I'm sure there's some evil FS genuis out there somewhere that has managed to hack the FSX code and is now running it on a Pentium III at 100fps but, due to the EULA, can't make it widely known but is laughing manically as we "speak"! :(

With your sense of imagination, who needs FSX.

I have an i7 920 clocked to 3.5Ghz and this is something I will look at much deeper but the little bit I have tried it this is quite impressive. I do get swings at smaller airports that will go as high as 60 but no higher and no stutters at all. Before this app I could not set to unlimited in a sparse area as the FPS would fluctuate from 60 to over 100 and stutter and jerk like crazy. Using FTX at YMML I still will only get high teens but flight is much smoother. Using FTX and flying out of Alice Springs I would lock FPS at 60 and keep 60 steady but with this app set at 30 it will jump into the 50's but not only is it stutter free it is so much smoother...and it was smooth without this app...that I have to fly different...if that makes any sense. Where it really shines with me is when I throw the weather at it. Still smooth as butter and heavy storms, rain, and snow don't seem to have any affect on performance at all. As I said I will test further but CPU usage appears to have dropped for me also by quite a bit....but this will require more testing. I know at YMML I threw everything at it and it was very smooth. Tried to get micro stutters doing turns for touch and go but have not seen one yet. Must be something wrong with my eyes or something else going on....it couldn't be this simple. This a big difference on my machine. OK I am going to try the Bush Hawk and heavy weather and see what that does...that Bush hawk can act up at times with FPS it can be very hard on performance using the high poly count.

I have the exact same behavior, so I guess it is "normal".. :(
Thanks. I couldn't be more happier with FSX than now! What a great little app. A million thanks to the contributors.I can now achieve a highly acceptable (thus very playable) framerate even in busy large terminals... doing ~26-34fps. And that's with Scenery Complexity and AG both set at Very Dense, traffic 30, 35, 10... Payware aircraft... UTX, FEX, GEX, AIS, FDC... other graphics settings nearly at max. Simply Amazing!! (Core 2 Duo E8500 OC'ed to 3.4GHz, 8800 GTS 384, 3Gig RAM, XP Pro, Nick's tweaks)

Yes I meant to say a thanks also to who came up with this. I have been testing this all day and am having amazing results. I am not going to go into details as I think brighter minds than mine have already started to explain what is happening with this app but I do know that something has to be going on how it is all working in the CPU....and before someone comes on here and tells me I am completely wrong.....I may very well be.....but this is doing a lot more than limiting FPS. All I know for sure is smooth...smooth....smooooth...and bring on the weather!! Regards

Go back to the Video Cards and Drivers forum, and look for my Feb 15 2009, 02:57 AM question posed for anyone who might know of a driver-level frame lock utility for nV GPUs. A little over two weeks later, a fellow by the name of Giz gave us a link to just such a utility. He had not, I don't believe from what he wrote, made a connection between using this particular utility to cap frames in FSX running in UNLIMITED mode to resolve the surges/spikes issue mentioned by many in various threads. This was an idea I had quite a while ago, in FS9 even, when I noticed the frame surges that would come in unlimited mode in certain situations--but never found any such utility despite googling several times. Very recently, I re-googled and noticed the utility was available on the X-plane forum for registered members. I believe it was being used to smooth out performance. As it turns out, it is used in several other apps to smooth out performance. It is like having a final filter at the end of a stream of less than perfectly syncronized actions to buffer and time the final output. In digital audio terms--it's a compressor/limiter.Giz was gracious to give us the link. I then proceeded to test out my hypothesis, and posted preliminary results quickly as I was so pleasantly tickled what what I was seeing. I'm glad Giz responded--thanks again Giz!

Yes, and thanks to yours and Nick friendly reminders for me to go back and play with the BPs. I can't believe how good this thing is running with BP's and FPS_Limiter. Just greased it up good!

Quite OT, but does anyone know how to install Java from Sun without an internet connection? I need Java to run this app and downloaded Java on the computer at my work because right now I don't have internet at home (problems, problems...). But when I tried to install Java I got a message my internet settings were wrong... I'd really like to give this app a try but just can't get it done...

Well, it's only about 600 Kb in size, so it's email-able as an attachment. The problem is: what are your specs? There could be a different Java version for Intel and for AMD. Also OS? I can download it for you and email it to you to your work? Give me specs and email addy. I am running 24 FPS without limiter and scenery slider as 'Normal' and 'Sparse' for AG. With limiter I am getting 34 to 39 FPS. Unbelieveable, but very nice. Finally stable and jamming. The sliders are creeping up. Tested all afternoon. Not finished. FRAPS videos come out smooth, sound and looks. (More JOY). Life is good. Thanks again Noel (and Gizmo). Do realize that it was Noel that thought of using it with FSX, so he deserves 99% of the credit for this. It would have been 'lost' if not for Noel. Lucky us.I HAD to try the BP increase (10 Meg to 25 Meg) and it did stop sound crackleing (JOY, JOY). Still hammering to maybe find full potential of this applet. But right now I'd say someone did get an inside look at FSX engine (maybe?) and did hit nail on head, although as mentioned, it was in use with X-Plane, until Noel decided to try with FSX. Good luck is good luck, but this was imagination and pure brain power working overtime. Noel, you're truly a genius (in my book).Chuck BNapamule

Hey Noel Many thanks for the thanks :) i had'nt posted this app sooner as im a DX10 flyer (i can hear nick tutting while reading this ;) ) and was only seeing the odd spike on my system due to having it well balanced, like i said i had used it in other games to smooth things out but as i was'nt seeing the problem in FSX i didnt think twice about posting it Doh!.....so thanks to yourself for asking the question that sparked off my replyIm happy that the 665 ppl who have sofar downloaded it from my RS acount are getting something out of this and more thanks to the ppl who have replyed with there thanks and finding ,Thank You :)last thanks goes to Nick N for putting this through it paces and posting his results, without him im Sure FSX would still be gathering Dust on a shelf for so many of us and we'ed all still be running Fs9 !if there was vote for most useful community member in the Avsim poll im sure he'ed win by a landslide so a very BIG thank you to Nick N for all his hard work not just on this but for everything else FS wiseOk im going to upset my apple cart and try this in DX9 mode ;)CheersSteve AKA Gizmo
