757 Captain, is it any good?

Featured Replies

Because I was kind of in the mood for it, I decided to try installing the Captain Sim 757 onto a brand new clean install of FSX. so I installed FSX, then SP1, then SP2, then the CS 757. And it loads into the sim, but it looks like this:2009-5-31_23-27-7-515.jpgNow I'll admit I'm no expert on the 757, but either the co-pilot has been selling the instruments, or something is missing, notably both CDUs amongst other things LOLAl

Al, can you post a bigger screen?
I don't think I can to be honest David, that's a 1024x768 pixel 72 DPI image, 3 Mb in size, and even if I up the size, all the images I've posted recently seem to come into forums when posted at that size from Photobucket - I really don't know why that should be the case, but it is.In any case, I can point out what is missing if it is not apparent from that picture: The lower DUs on the FO and Captain's sides, all the digits from the centre pedestal controls, some digits from the EFIS/MCP, and both CDUs. There may be more stuff missing, but those are the obvious parts.More a case of Oh Captain my Captain, rather than Captain Sim :( Now there's an obscure connection, Walt Whitman and a B757!Al

From what i have seen on U tube videos,CS757 has default sounds, and stuttering gauges?!!??

It did originally require you to buy an additional sound pack, but I think these days they include that sound pack by default, so maybe you have seen videos of older purchases? With regard to FPS, I'm always wary of judging that from Youtube videos; often people have used FRAPs to record such footage, and FRAPS eats RAM like it is going out of fashion, so it tends to make for somewhat choppy footage on long video clips.Al

No default sounds or stuttering gauges here.

No, it has separate RR & PWsound sets. Gauges are smooth. I suppose if you had inadequate hardware to run it or other issues, they might not be so smooth.

It focusses on reproducing recognizable normal procedures in a superb graphic environment. It has a high fun factor. I fly it exclusively from the vc. If you mean can you reset buttons on the circuit board, no. It is not a deep procedural trainer. Neither is it liteware. It has native Navigraph support. It has different priorities than the Level D 767, and I do not think is a replacement for it.

At least you're making progress. Earlier today it was crashing on select :-)

I've made more progress than that - not wishing to be defeated, I did a manual uninstall of FSX (as opposed to using the disks), cleaned everything out and reinstalled FSX, then SP1, then SP2, then the CS757 and that did the trick. It is now working.2009-6-1_4-35-58-328.jpgYeehar.What a pain in the &@($* all that was to get it working, but on the plus side it does fly very nicely and seems to be pretty good. I know the real thing is a slippery bar steward (I saw a brand new pre-delivery BA one being stunted at an air show years ago - that was a sight to see LOL), and it was emulating that slick speed pretty well from what I could tell in the few short circuits and bumps I tried. With the graphics on full throttle it is a bit of a frame rate hog, but even so, it was still hitting flyable frame rates, which means I guess with them calmed down a bit I reckon it would run okay. Those are not default sounds on mine by the way, they are the custom ones, and I didn't buy any sound pack or anything like that, so I guess you must get them with the base package.VC is very pretty and quite usable in spite of there being a lot of 2D panels if you prefer them. I could quite easily use the CDU in the VC without even zooming in the view. The default eyepoint in the cockpit is weird though, seems like you are sat on a parachute and five cushions, so you do need to shunt it down a bit - I think I'd permanently alter that in the config file.Al

I'm glad you got it working. She's a quick study for an experienced simmer. No gotchas.I was skeptical about CS's claim that they expect you to use FSX flight planner fuel estimate, and that's why they didn't include a fuel planner. Whatever the merits of that explanation, using the PSS 757 planner came up with a similar number for trip fuel alone. Now, by the time I added alternate, hold, taxi and adjusted for a headwind, plus a little extra to be on the safe side, I had about 10,000 kg more. I know real airlines discourage this sort of "better safe than sorry" approach, but I'm not paying for my fuel. With more landings logged I'll get a better sense about fuel planning. Anyway, the fuel estimate in FSX isn't a bad starting place as long you recognize it is trip fuel only.I was playing around with the ACE tonight, too. With no pax, it adds no stations in the config file except pilot, co-pilot and however many flight attendants 510 lbs will get you: four rather petite ones, I reckon. With 173 pax you get 171 more stations at 150 lbs each (that's optimistic these days) and I figured x4 999 lb boxes for baggage and whatever. It still doesn't work out exactly in fuel and payload in FSX. She was a little on the heavy side at brake release, but still well within limits.I'm flying over Central America right now at a silky 20 FPS. Neat to see both the Atlantic and the Pacific on one screen shot. I have amused myself by sitting in each jump seat, making the captain's seat go up and down and forward and back, playing with food in the galley, and even visiting the lavatory, not to forget taking an appropriate eye-point view of my surroundings. The last time I had seen a virtual toilet was in the Flight 1 ATR.Then I visited first class and watched the safety video. Not much to it. I wish there was a way to put the Oceanic Safety Video in. (LOST fans will enoy the appropriate You Tube search. "Remember, the nearest exit might be behind you.") I made the mistake of heading back to coach. Talk about a lack of amenities. No seats, no bulkheads... no anything! In fact, it was looking a lot like Oceanic 815 after all! I was glad to make it back to First Class, through the galley and onto the flight deck. (And there is no rabbit on my rear bulkhead.)I can't believe I am on record preferring 2D panels. A big wide-screen flat panel and a CS vc will change your mind. I don't think I've sat behind the 2D panel for longer than it takes to hit the A key since I've gotten this one.

Hello Tim,I went as far as the Panama Canal and had to go to bed. I would have gotten there at about 4:15 in the morning. I will have to try that flight again when I have time to do the whole thing. That is a beautiful flight and it is awesome with the Captain Sims 757-300 which handles it beautifully, to say the least(even without the wabbit).I use Vroute's fuel planner to get my fuel load. It seems to work very good. I also got the flight plan from Vroute.I have Feelthere's "MAP" Link: MAP which helps to keep you entertained on those long flights.I will definately fly that SKBO to MMMX again real soon when I can finish it.Here is the flight plan that Vroute gave: SKBO ABL RNG UA323 TBG UA317 LIO UL200 LIB UG436 AUR UA552 MTT UJ5 MEX MMMXI did take some nice screen shots. :(

hijust bought it,looks superb, however i have heavy issues frame rate wise....my computer is a 3.7ghz quad core with a 8800gts and 8 gb ram, its powerfull enough to move anything i have tryed(and ive tryed alot!) in FSX apart from this addon, 6 FPS is what i got....But I think there is a bug, at first i thought it could be the graphics in the virtual cabin that were heavy in the frames, so I jumped to 2d and hide everything (2d panels etc...)also lower all the graphic settings no frame rate improvement.... what really puzzles me more and confirms its not issue with it being it too heavy graphicwise is that when i pause the sim, the frame rates jump to the 30s in the virtual cabin (and for the case any other view) so im wondering if its a setting for the flight dynamics or something to do with the internals of this addon that is killing the frames... (i thought it could be the traffic, so i made sure i had no traffic at all in the settings)this is a real shame for me, i just simply cant enjoy it,and makes it useless :(It also seem its not only me who is suffering this, as there are quite a few comments on the net from other people complaining about frame rates in good computer rigs...Any idea what could it be?thanks

Do you have FSX SP2 installed? I'm asking because there is big difference with it, and it is minimum system requirement for CS 757.

I agree with this assessment. I would just add that it is not quite as "complete" as the PMDG and Level-D models, on my PC anyway. I've noticed a few things but the main ones are that some of the text on the 3D cockpit is extremely (and I think unrealistically) small, not all parts of the cockpit are modelled equally well (though the good bits are really very good indeed), some of the controls respond erratically to mouse input (try using the scroll wheel to change SEL speed or barometric pressure: you'll need to click on the "other side" of the control to stop the thing spinning), the approach mode is not quite right (there is a tendency towards un-realistic GPWS warnings), neither is the autoland flare, the tendency to roll in response to yoke movements is a little exaggerated (IMHO) and the weather radar - which is a very nice feature - doesn't seem to work without switching to the 2D cockpit to get things going. There is no friendly co-pilot (or other Vr call-out etc) and there are no airline or other customisable options so far as I can tell (eg, no speed tape option - though I don't know whether this is because the 757 was never manufactured with airline options).Framerates are on a par with the PMDG MD-11X on my PC: maybe just a little slower but not so as to notice. My personal ranking is the PMDG MD-11X, Level-D 767X, PMDG 747X, then CaptainSim 757 v4.3. But while there is little to choose between the quality of the first three (although after getting used to the PMDG products, the 3D cockpit in the 767X is beginning to show its age) I feel the 757 still has some way to mature.Tim
