So you want to be a regional airpline pilot?

I've wanted to be a pilot since I was ten, and now that I'm 22 I've finally finished up with all my ratings except my CFI, but the current economy still makes me wary. Not about flying in general, but about being an airline pilot. I really have no desire to teach kids how to fly because it wouldn't be fair to them. It's not something I have a desire to do and therefore I feel like I would be cheating them. I, nor anyone else, knows what the economy is going to look like next May when I graduate, so I'm signing my contract with the Marine Corps in two weeks. I've got a guaranteed spot in flight school when I graduate college, OCS and TBS, assuming I do well on my ASTB which I take very soon. Being a military pilot is always something I've wanted to do, but I honestly never thought it was a feasible option, but I finally woke up and realized that it IS, so I'm doing it and I couldn't be happier. I of course by no means want to shove that down anyone's throat, but it is an alternative that a lot of people are going to and the benefits are great. Steady employment, travel, great pay and benefits, and a good chance that you'll escape the regionals entirely and head to the majors, which is a nice thought.
Yup, definitely go military. Civil aviation is a race to the bottom. Wait till oil prices start heading back up again over the $100 mark again.I'm not in the military but I'm semi-close to it as there are a lot of US military where I live.So if you can handle "Community Standards Man" and being told where you can and can't get a haircut, the Town Patrol, curfews, the shaved heads, go military. You also have to consider that you may be asked to drop bombs on people. Some people would have reservations about doing that kind of thing.Cheers,

Although money is important, having a job that you want to do every day will make you happier in the long run. When I lost my job in the non-profit world last month, the first thing I thought was "well, maybe I'll be able to put in some extra FS time." If it is your dream, go for it. And for those that are going in to the military, many people I know, including myself, really do appreciate your service. Thank you! As for being an attorney, my wife graduated last year - #20 in her class. Here is what you can expect if this is your dream.$32,000/year70-80 hours per weekHigh Stress$100,000 in outstanding student loansAs with many competitive positions, you have to put your time in before the bucks roll in.The bottom line is the only profession I can think of that would be perfect is hanging around the house, flying my sim all day while spending my lottery winnings on add ons. That can also be stresfull - ctd's, BSOD's...

that killing is wrong and there is no justification and I have no support for those who do
So I guess everybody should have just let a really bad dude continue on exterminating all those undesirable people, right?

Well, we have Government Motors cars, so can a true national airline be far behind? No one goes bankrupt more regularly than airlines. The legal industry is in a huge slump now. I would not want to be starting out. There is always the option for the JAG Corps, and you don't even have to kill anyone (well, unless you're a prosecutor, and that rather indirectly, and probably won't happen anyway).

.Mil is the way to go. Plenty of experience when you get out (go front seat-fixed wing for those legacy jobs, even though helo is more fun "$5 E-1 to E-5, $10 for E-6 to O-whatever if you get them to puke, you can make some nice $ hauling reservists :( ). If the economy is better then send out the big resume and legacy WILL PICK YOU UP if they are hiring. If no one is hiring then stay in and go for a VX/FRS/Aggressor job. Might need to do some desk time in your first stint and your second, not fun but it is a descent check with good benefits. Just make sure you have everything in your contract including Aviator not Flight Officer, they will guarantee it, just squawk going Navy of Air force if they don't, also make sure it is signed and dated.

having a grandmother who is a survivor, I do happen to be against a really bad dude, however If you read up he killed himself like the coward he was. Im against killing on both sides.Current wars really dont have people like a really bad dude killing 6 million people and it is more simply blood for oil which does not make sense for me

If you "bomb the crap" out of the right people, yes. Anyway, let's not hijack this post too badly.
