J41 Engine Start Guide

Featured Replies

Andrew, love your JS4100 videos on youtube. I'd like to ask you a question about the sound levels in your videos. There's a video where you land and you can clearly hear the landing thud, something I've never heard in mine. Did you adjust your engine sound levels way down, or perhaps edit sound files to enhance the landing sound? Just curious, I want to make improvements where I can. Thanks. Curt
Hi Curt,Thanks for the comment. The base track for all the audio is actual in-game recorded sound. However, after it is recorded and edited and compressed, the sounds are bland and boring. I edited in the appropriate audio files on top of the base sound track in order to emphasize certain sounds, and adjusted the levels accordingly. The landing thud is still a PMDG J41 sound, but it is artificially isolated and increased in volume in order to emphasize the sound and make the video more fun to watch.

Ah, okay that makes sense. Thanks for the quick response. Curt

I'm following all of the procedures but the start light stays on, torque stays low, rpm slowly builds to 50% then it automatically shuts down. I've set the levers correctly, have fuel, and fuel flow. EGT builds normally. Any ideas?I didn't read carefully above. The procedure below solved my problem.Hey guys,Have you looked out the window to see if the stop locks have engaged? (pictures here). If they're not the starter simply won't have the oomph to get her turning over fast enough. If your locks are not engaged, you can do the following:1) Put your power levers into full reverse (F2)2) Push the L/R UNFEATHER SWITCH for each of the engines (on the centre console by the power levers). If you look outside, you'll see the props starting to move to full fine pitch.3) Once the props have reached full fine, move the power levers back into the start position4) Find whoever shut the engines down after their last run and "educate" them with a training stick.
I found out yesterday (the hard, burning and smoking way :( ) that even using the feather option doesn't alway work because...as soon as you've toughed (accidently) one of the power/condition levers), the feathered props revert back again. So check..check...doublecheck if the props are feathered or not.

What do you do if your sim starts your flight with engines already turned off???
First thing I'd ask is how you got it to do that. :( I'd really like the J41 to be in a CAD situation, so I can learn a proper startup. Thought the configuration setup would allow that, but it didn't.

I burned 4 engines myself before getting it going.
Thats impressive,because the J41 only has 2 engines... :(

Thanks heaps Andrew, great job on the quick flick, helped heaps.

I'm still burning a fair number of them but I really appreciate the video. It is very helpful and I'm starting to get the hang of it.

A PMDG Jetstream 32EP(fs9) would be great!
