J41 Engine Start Guide

Featured Replies

Very nice video. I like the speed. Most tutorial videos I close because I can trial and error faster! The big starting problem I was having was because I didn't load the tutorial flight. My default flight causes the engines not to start for some reason.Otherwise, I would have been flying on my first attempt.Tim Dobrowolsky
Thanks Tim. I'm glad there are some people that like the speed of the video. When editing the guide, I kept thinking to myself of all the times I closed a video tutorial I was watching to look for a text one. I hate sitting through trivial footage and only reaching the important points every ten seconds or so!-Andrew Noble

I should have said this when I commented earlier, but I too loved the speed of the video.

Thanks for the video Andrew! I have melted 2 of my fleet. No more BBQ's
Andrew thanks for the video man. Guys I'm still having problems starting these engines. I've followed the procdures in the manual and I've also done everything as shown on the video. Out of many attempts, I think I've been sucessful only twise. My problem is the RPMs come up extremely slow. The light-up appears to be normal at around 10%, and EGT also appears normal at around 690. RPMs come up slowly until the starter cuts out at around 48% or so. What part of the procedure to start these engines, will cause RPMs to come up slow if done incorrectly? Right now the only way I can fly this airplane is to load another turboprop, and then jump into the Jetstream. Don't know what else to do. Any idea?As for PMDG, you guys are absolutely hands down, the best flight sim aircraft developer. Please continue to make these airplanes. You guys are awesome! Thank you!Ray "Bones" Lemus

What I've found is that the props are not in their start locks if you load the J41 from a default flight (such as with the C172). Thus, you might be trying to start with the props feathered. Apparently, this is too much strain on the Garretts, so we have this start lock business.

I'm sure many of you new J41 pilots have or are experiencing the exact same frustration I went through last night: can't start these bloody engines! Even after reading the tutorial, I could not successfully stop and start the J41's engines. Half the time, they spontaneously combusted into a plume of fire and smoke and molten metal!Reading some of the threads on this forum about engine frustrations, I was inspired to create a short video tutorial on how to stop and start the J41's engines, starting from the default aircraft configuration (not cold and dark). I'm just as new to this aircraft as the rest of you, so I may have done some things incorrectly in the video, but this procedure works for me so I hope it will work for you too. It's not nearly as comprehensive as PMDG's official tutorial and skims over a number of procedures outlined in the manual, but I think it will give viewers a good idea of how to start this aircraft without incident. If you have tips or tricks you would like to add, don't hesitate to reply here or on YouTube.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDxWAxPE1UMRegards,-Andrew Noble
What a 'noble' contribution from a guy named "Noble"!!! :( Andrew, all I can say right now is, "Thank You, for a work of art" in putting together a brief but very informative video. The flightsim community is very thankful, I am sure. Very professionally done.Best Regards,GodfreyG :(

How do you get the throttle all the way back? I have the GoFlight GF-TQ6.David
Ray,From what you've described it sounds like the props aren't on the start locks. Take a look at this post and it should help you out.http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?s=&...t&p=1631589
Mike and Jeff. Thanks for the reply guys. I won't be home until Thursday. I'll try it when I get back. Thanks again. See Yah!Ray

Concorde, thanks for your supersonic years...

I'm not sure how that module works. For throttle configuration I use a simple slider, and for reverser operation (as required in the engine stop and start procedures) I press and hold 'F2,' which is bound in FSX to decrease throttle by default.I appreciate all the kind comments from everyone regarding my video!

Congrats OMDG such a nice Bird!!! Top Quality!but still problem the engine start form the tutorial flight. only ignition sound thats it, :( i`ve printed out everything so i can repeat everything.anyway its a great plane to fly.Zoltan Radanyi ( Hypo )

4Ghz??!!!! :( How on Earth do you get abysmal performance with a 4Ghz CPU and a GTX-285? I also have a Q9550 (at the stock frequency of 2.83Ghz), plus a 512MB GeForce 9800GT, and FSX runs fine most of the time with VFR Generation X Version 2 photographic scenery. Mind you, I don't generally use autogen, and framerates drop to around 10fps with VFR London X set to Extremely Dense :(
For me its the weather add-ons that show that the hardware still isnt' there. I'm in single digits in the clouds and I have an i7 ocd to 3.666 ghz and a beefy card.

I'm following all of the procedures but the start light stays on, torque stays low, rpm slowly builds to 50% then it automatically shuts down. I've set the levers correctly, have fuel, and fuel flow. EGT builds normally. Any ideas?I didn't read carefully above. The procedure below solved my problem. Hey guys,Have you looked out the window to see if the stop locks have engaged? (pictures here). If they're not the starter simply won't have the oomph to get her turning over fast enough. If your locks are not engaged, you can do the following:1) Put your power levers into full reverse (F2)2) Push the L/R UNFEATHER SWITCH for each of the engines (on the centre console by the power levers). If you look outside, you'll see the props starting to move to full fine pitch.3) Once the props have reached full fine, move the power levers back into the start position4) Find whoever shut the engines down after their last run and "educate" them with a training stick. With the start locks engaged the props will be in full fine, and therefore significantly easier for the engine to turn. As a result, your engine RPM will climb properly during start and stabilise at 72 odd percent. This was pretty much the first problem I ran into with the aircraft. As soon as I loaded her up I shut everything down in order to practice cold & dark procedures. Of course this meant I hadn't put the power levers into reverse during shutdown, leaving the props feathered!Hope this helps, James CulletonModern aviation quote #11: "what's it doing now?"

great video it confirms I am starting ok this may sound stupid but is it possible to start the aircrat without theassistance of the ground power unit I am starting great with it on any way great sim PMDG I thought you surpassed all with theMD11 but you have done it again with the J41 my wife has told me to buy another PC as she cant get on this one as I am flying PMDGevery day well into the night. more expence but worth it.

Andrew, love your JS4100 videos on youtube. I'd like to ask you a question about the sound levels in your videos. There's a video where you land and you can clearly hear the landing thud, something I've never heard in mine. Did you adjust your engine sound levels way down, or perhaps edit sound files to enhance the landing sound? Just curious, I want to make improvements where I can. Thanks. Curt
