September 21, 200916 yr I thought this story is very pertinent given recent discussions here :)http://play.tm/news/26667/eidos-catch-out-...-asylum-pirate/ I saw this myself and thought of the recent discussions here as well as elsewhere I visit. I like the "bug in your moral code" line. There are many like this unfortunately. Supporter GhostRecon.net | AGgReSsion WhiteKnight77's Place Mike Shannon
September 22, 200916 yr That's my favorite kind of DRM, the kind that screws over the gameplay of pirates, while not being uber restrictive. Personally though, My favorite DRM is ArmA 2's implementation of FADE: Youtube vids: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueSGNVtZQpw It's classic to see those vids, cause it looks like the player is drugged!I would much rather see this kind of DRM than activation limits... September 22, 200916 yr FADE has been in use for some time with some FPS games. This is similar to what was suggested in the other thread. I'm with Peter on this, much better than activation limits and does not punish those who buy games and such. It just makes the professional pirates work harder to keep a game working while discouraging the average game pirate and encourages said pirate to buy the game. September 22, 200916 yr That's pretty interesting. Though I think it should render the game a little more "unplayable"... Maybe randomly invert axis and the screen itself. After reading through a few forums though, it seems perhaps a few unlucky folks are suffering from the copyright protection while rightfully owning the software (unless ofcourse they're fibbing about owning it). ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
September 22, 200916 yr ^^ what ZachLW said is correct. The copy-protection actually hurts a lot of real owners. I buy a ton of PC games so i can play them on my laptop while on business trips or long flights. However, the copy-protection thing prevents a lot of games from working (many require you to log-in to a server, even for single player games). And most require you to put in the original CDs/DVDs for the game to work. That means i'll have to carry all my games w/ me when i travel!?? and if there's no internet (like on a flight) then i can't play it.So these days, after i buy the game, i have to install a crack or something so i can play the game from anywhere i want. But if these games can detect the crack, then it'll suck for us real owners. Don't get me wrong, i'm not endorsing pirating (i'm a developer in the industry myself), but i just wished there was a less hassle way to play games w/out internet monitoring all the time. Or maybe legit owners have an "We Trust You Account" with certain vendors....so games i buy from them are completely unlocked....(you get this account after you buy 10 legit games over 40$ or something)... i don't even mind paying a 100$ "we trust you" account fee if i can play my games w/out hassle...-feng
September 22, 200916 yr Actually, it does render it very unplayable with FADE in ArmA 2. Eventually in singleplayer it will turn your player character in to ether a crow or raven (can't remember which), with the phrase in the chat box on the bottom of the screen "good birds don't fly away from the game". For multiplayer when FADE activates it will kick you from the game saying "Illegal copies may FADE" or "Illegal copies may degrade". most times though with the legit users getting faded, they tried to install the english mod for the german version in the default addons folder. installing anything in that folder with ArmA 2 is a big no-no as that folder's addons are on all the time, and a lot of multiplayer servers don't allow mods at all, or only will allow certain mods, and any other mods it will auto-kick you. The best practice for mods is always mod folders such as @F16 for the F-16 addon for instance, or @C130 for c130 skins. Inside that @ folder is a set of folders that resembles the actual games folder structure, where you put the mods in. Then you use a launcher or change the path in the icon to add -mod=@modfolder;@modfolder2 . If you do that, especially with mods that change the base files, you should NOT have FADE activate as FADE mainly checks for modified default files.
