September 24, 200916 yr Thank you for bring this up. I too had the stutters with jobschedular set at 255. Changing it to 85 eliminated the stutters.Ed
September 24, 200916 yr Author Time to be getting off the computer...and out onto an October motorcycle ride! :) Before, though....-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I got to fooling around with the Tree Limiter settings in my .cfg file. I already enjoy great performance, so thought to 'tune' the 'look' of FSX for what I like. Here's what I did. I got rid of the BUILDING limiter mask altogether.I kept adjusting the TREE LIMITER MASK and then went for a flight over forested territory that I know quite well. Bike there, camp there, etc. With a few FSX flights I found that TREES set for:TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=1000Both GRAPHICS settings AUTOGEN and SCENERY DENSITY cranked FULL to the right and staying there.........looks good, looks real-world natural, gives great performance, and that is the name of the game.I'm leaving my .cfg file alone now, as with the final addition of the JOBSCHEDULER at the start...leaves nothing more to do, but enjoy, and fly, fly, and fly some more.Below is my final .cfg for if anybody wishes to try out, mind you..editing out things that pertain only to my setup..and pasting in yours...:)System: Dell XPS 730x H2C run with:(Hyperthreading set to on)(Overclocked to TURBO MODE, BIN 30 on all four cores 30x133.7=equals 4.011 GHz running speed)(Crucial 1066 September 24, 200916 yr I don't know if this is working for other corei7 users with HT enabled, but changing the mask to 85 as stated above has made a noticeable difference for me as well in FSX. I thought this was pretty strange so I disabled HT and removed the affinity mask settings in the config file and I still don't see the 5-7 FPS increase that I do with HT enabled and the affinity at 85.Can somebody else try to reproduce this? September 24, 200916 yr Author ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hi Kingfish,Actually, this was a great inprovement on my P4 3.4., When tuning up my .cfg file, I thought to add this in once more on my i7 system. To the compliments and strength of the i7-975/GTX285 combo, it really didn't do a kick-start for smoothness, etc as I already had that 'out of the gate'. I left it in, because it really can't hurt the performance in any case. It DID help though with FPS on my P4! The JOBSCHEDULER tweak came after that one, so any inprovement as seen through the JOBSCHEDULER/85 setting totally stands on its own.Mitch------------------------------------------------------------------I just caught my OWN typo: Not 'inprovement', but 'improvement'. Sheesh!Nothing worse than typo's....:(Mitch

I am however, seeing a noticeable difference in the overall smoothness of FSX.Regards,BobBob,I have my frames locked at 28 and now 98% of the flight is pegged at 28 and even busy airports are much much smoother. The overall fluidity of the sim has drastically improved for me. I flew for the first time(in my payware heavies) over downtown Seattle where the frames were consistently at 25. Scott KGPI

September 25, 200916 yr If I understand correctly the magic number is 85. 255 - all 8 in use254 - 7 in use with the first remaining free252 - 6 in use with the first entire CORE remaining free127 - 7 in use with the last remaining free63 - 6 in use with the last entire CORE remaining free1 = 1 core 00013 = 2 cores 00117 = 3 cores 011112 = 2 cores last 110014 = 3 cores last 111015 = 4 cores 1111No 85 here, is it?I don't understand if this is a HT thing, just the affinitymask thing (85) or something else? So, if 85 did the trick with HT enabled (254, 252, 127, 63... no 85) I wonder what's the equivalent number if HT is disabled (1, 3, 7, 12, 14, 15.... x?)? I'm using affinity 14 but frankly I don't see any difference between 14, 15 or no affinitymask. I get decent performance, some stutters on turns. No stutters at all... that's what I dream about every night ;) Tomaz Drnovsek My FSX Videos My AVSIM Gallery
September 25, 200916 yr ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Kingfish,With having boosted my TREES from 400 to 2,000 , my frame rate in UNLIMITED with no software limiter engaged: 48-52 mean average, with peaks and spikes from 62-112 FPS. Coast flying and over-water flying gives me my already stated FPS. Basically the same as ever. In my original post to somebody else, where I stated that I get in the low to high MEAN of the 40's FPS range, was so I could remain conservative in FPS stating., which covered ALL aspects and areas of FSX. On this post, I stated the verbatim FPS I get when flying just outside the mountain range near Victoria, B.C. Again, this was with your 2,000 in the TREE Limit. There was no stutter of any kind. The other custom tweak in place here, is of course the JOBSCHEDULER/85.Cheers!MitchMitch,Happy to hear that the JobScheduler/85 continues to work at a higher trees setting. My impressions of this thread are:1. Acknowledging that MSFSX will not use the HT cores (Per Nick and Microsoft)2. Despite our best efforts, background processes continue in WindowsThen it would appear that if you have an i7 chip (with hyper-threading) and you enable hyper-threading:1. a setting of 85 in the jobscheduler will force MSFSX to only look at the "real cores" and 2. the virtual cores that have now been enabled as a result of HT being on are available to run other processes.Apparently, the error in our thinking in the past was that a job scheduler of 255 would give us the thread collisions; job scheduler of 254 would continue to give us thread collisions; and that if we turned off HT and went with 15 we allowed nothing for background processes and 14 would remove one "real" core from the processing. Sounds like HT on and job scheduler of 85 assigns all four "real" cores to the MSFSX task and leaves four "virtual" cores for other processes. And it also would suggest that this would not work for anything other than the i7 chips. So maybe today I will get some time to go flight simming..............and I'll try it.Kingfish

Drop your overclock, to where you can control your CORE TEMPS with Hyperthreading set to on...and then kick in the 85. See if your FSX experience has improved. If so, then you WIN! It's not only the GHz of your CPU that obviously is in play, here. The more we THINK TANK, FSX...the more we see that this bird is elusive and complex. Try my suggestion...and if successful, please report it back to this thread. Mitch

As I stated, in the TASK MANAGER, ABSOLUTELY there is minor activity on the 'virtual/shadow' cores versus the energetic activity on the actual's. As others have stated, and collaborated my observations on their i7 systems, this certainly bears enabling JOBSCHEDULER/85 and hyperthreading for use on an i7-based system running FSX. I wish you the same success! Enjoy!Mitch
September 25, 200916 yr Commercial Member I have not yet gone the i7 route, but am shortly building an i7 920 rig as a secondary PC, to network when flying FSX using wideview. Am hoping for some pretty good bang for my buck!!I just wanted to say, how much I am impressed with the way the community here gets together and figures this stuff out, for the greater enjoyment of all of us. It really is an amazing place this forum, I dont know where I would be without it. Looking forward to putting the knowledge to work in my new rig!!cheers, Mark
