December 12, 200916 yr Call of Duty sold 1,000,000 copies in the UK alone... and how many in the FS addon industry sold 100,000 copies of a single item?Don't you know? Gerry Howard
December 12, 200916 yr Commercial Member Don't you know?Yes sir. I do know. Not one. If anyone tells you they have they are telling you a lie.I have been developing FS products as long if not longer than anyone (probably longer) If anyone knows my history, they know that I know what I am talking about, I am extremely up front and I don't fake anything.Nobody in this business has ever had 100,000 sales of any one FS add-on product. Period. I truly get sick of the ridiculous assumptions of how lucrative this hobby is and how many add-on users there are.It is much, much smaller than assumed. So any piracy is of great significance. I said that I would not post anymore, but there you go, I did. Jim
December 13, 200916 yr Commercial Member If there were 100,000 sales of a single FS addon... 0.1% of that would be 100 units. At a typical cost of $50 you are talking $5000.However, I suspect the numbers average far closer to 2000 sales... at which point a piracy level in excess of 10,000 (yes, I've seen that level of downloads) tells me that the loss is far greater in the FS addon industry than any other software industry. So... while you can minimalize the impact of piracy on software that sells a million copies, or more. You can not state that the same is for a product that sells far fewer items. FSX itself only sold ~1,000,000 copies world-wide. Ed Wilson Mindstar AviationMy Playland - I69
December 13, 200916 yr And a fine one it is Jim.I find it amusing that folks think this business is really lucrative when a three year project turns out mediocre returns and is panned by folks who should be mature enough to appreciate what is being offered. The piracy discussions I've seen repeat the same old mantras and sometimes unhealthy/nosey interest to the inside track of FS Development. After they all fade, devs are still faced with dealing with theft on their own terms while understanding that thieves have probably monitored and participated in the threads. :(

If others will assume, let them assume and you know what they say about combining the 2 words that make up the word assume.Get back to work, forget about arguing with folks that simply want to argue and lets do what we can do, while we still can. It isn't worth it gents.Jim

If anyone tells you they have they are telling you a lie.I have been developing FS products as long if not longer than anyone (probably longer) I worked with Laemming Wheeler (the developer of the first 3rd party aircraft tool - Flight Shop)I worked with Mark Pechnik, developer of ATP, Sublogic and Propilot. In fact at one point, Mark worked for me.I don't have to prove anything I say.
