December 9, 200916 yr I just checked the UA flight (898) of my wife's cousins from Narita to Dulles (IAD) and its groundspeed is 615 knots or Mach 1.066. I know it's not the IAS but it's kinda fun to think that they are travelling over the surface of the earth at a speed greater than that of sound.Too bad about Concorde. I am totally fed up flying at Mach 0.80-0.85 for the past 40 years. I wish we had hypersonic by now: we should all be flying at Mach 5 to Mach 8.JS Jonathan Sacks Dell XPS Gen 4, Pentium IV Northwood extreme 3.8Ghz, 3Ghz RAM, eVGA 7900 GTO, 12 GoFlight modules plus MCP-PRO AP and EFIS, GF pedestal, CH rudder pedals, CH throttle quadrant, 42" LG LED, 24" DELL LCD, Windows XP, FS2004, FSUIPC 3.96 FS Autostart 1.1 (Build 11), FS Navigator 4.6, UT, FE, GE, REX, PMDG, Level-D, PSS, etc.
December 9, 200916 yr Haha this is great :( I never knew the jumbo could go supersonic :( Richy David Andrew - desert based - a330/350 rated.

December 21, 200916 yr no news here, with head wind of 110 then then the a/c will be 490 Ground speed.I suppose for Airliners, A380 is fastest over ground since it can climb higher than most if not all. Thin air high up makes for faster speed through air and over ground.I magine if 747 can hit 615 gs with some tail wind at FL370, then A380 should clock around 700gs at FL450 in similar weather.Dont know exactly how much higher a380 can fly over 747, but i suspect it about 8 thousand feet highger, and higher is faster. In which case a380 is probably faster tahn 747.

The A380 does not fly 8 thousand feet higher than a 747. Higher also does not mean faster. Above the mid 20s, fast aircraft become mach limited. Their maximum speed is dictated by their maximum operating mach number. The speed of sound is temperature dependent. As temperature decreases with altitude towards the tropopause, so does the speed of sound. Therefore as an aircraft climbs into the 30s, it flies slower and slower for any given mach number.

Goes to show you cant trust a simmer to fly a real plane.
