HELP from a very desperate simmer with disappointment on a new rig

Featured Replies

OK so I just bought with my brother a new rig that he built. It has the following:Core i7 920 no overclocking done yet4 GB of DDR3Gainward Gold GTX 260 896 MB of DDR3500 GB HD 7,200 RPM24 inch Iiyama screen in 1920x1080 setting. So I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64,I installed FS X, loaded up the first flight, rebooted the computer, installed SP 1, loaded flight, rebooted, loaded SP 2, first flight, rebooted, and then started flying.I put all settings on max, except traffic for everything at 5-10%. I get 7-14 FPS (I have NO add ons installed). and I'm playing at a low resolution for a 24 inch (1380 by 768)When I put the autogen to none or sparse and remove the ground scenery cast shadows options, I get 15 to 25 FPS but very stuttery (I have the FPS locked at 24) like it'll be at 24 FPS for 3 seconds then go down to 4 and ruin the whole sim experience, I flew in spot plane mode around KSEA with all default, a few clouds, etc...I'm just scared because this is all default, no add ons... I thought the rig I had was considered mid/high end... My wndows 7 index is 5.9 (for the Hard Drive reading time, everything else is above 7)Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to chill? I haven't applied any other tweaks such as on herehttp://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=29041Would those tweaks prove succesfful? Is there no rig today that can run FS X completely maxed out with no add ons? Please help me :( I got so frustrated I just reinstalled FS 9 (which runs like a charm obviously)Thanks!!Will

Hi WillThe link to Nick's guide is NOT about using tweaks to get the most out of FSX - it is about understanding what FSX is all about and how best to TUNE FSX to your requirements. It is therefore REQUIRED reading and it is your first port of call even prior to installing FSX which requires a certain procedure. Not following Nick's guide pretty much to the letter is your loss, as is clearly evidenced by your poor FSX performance on what is in fact a VERY decent system.

Hey there, thanks for the reply! Well yeah I want to use his guide which is why I did the first part... Where he says to reboot upon completion of every step (SP 1, SP 2, etc), anything below that I haven't yet done and I will... I was just surprised is all... The there would be such stutters...I'm really excite about FS X, all my life I've only playes on a 15 inch laptop so imagine how happy I would be to get it to run decently on a 24 inch screen :):)

You will NEED to overclock that 920. On stock speeds it is alright but not as fast as you'd think. 3.6 - 4.0 GHz is where you want to end up. You'll want a nice cooler such as this:http://www.crazypc.com/products/ultra-120-1366-50985.htmlAnd following that guide will help.

Helloyou should be running at the native resolution for your screen, LCD screens need to run at the native res

One question looking at your specs is why are you running 4GB of RAM (2x 2GB modules) on a 1366/X58 platform which uses a triple channel memory configuration?ASUS Rampage II Extreme (1639 BIOS) Intel Core i7-975 Extreme Edition w/Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme 1366 RTMushkin Redline Ascent 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) (6-6-5-18-1N)Asus/ATI 5870 (Catalyst 9.11)Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1tyWD VelociRaptor 150GB

"One question looking at your specs is why are you running 4GB of RAM (2x 2GB modules) on a 1366/X58 platform which uses a triple channel memory configuration?"Well when he first built the computer he bought an E6600, he then got a free i7 at work so never changed the RAM... Would triple channel make a big difference? Also I found out the cooler he has for the processor, it is a GeminiII S seen here:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835103046Would that be enough to overclock the i7? It looks big but smaller than the one posted further up on this thread...Oh and our MOBO is the ASUS Rampage II Gen Thanks so much for all you guys' help :-)

Are you sure that's DDR3 RAM? I find it highly unlikely that a system which previously ran an E6600 would be using DDR3. Can't say I know of a single person doing that.

If you carried that RAM over from a Core 2 build that

You should not be getting that kind of FPS at all, with auto-gen even at sparse. I have mine on extremely high and very high and it still runs much smoother than that. Your PC should be running it a lot better than mine. Check out this topic:http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=267300&hl=

I've got DDR-3 running on my E6600 quad core with no problems at all..Regards,jack

But an e6600 is a dual core isn't it?? Do you mean the q6600?

Ok, well let's clear this RAM question. What is the make and model of your motherboard? In general, you would want to overclock that CPU - that is the main draw for the I7-920. At stock, it isn't going to be fantastic with FSX - overclocked it will. Depending on your motherboard, you might be able to find some settings that will get you in the ballpark in this forum.

I second Jeff. There must be some sort of corruption between the i7 and your motherboard. For starters, you run a dual core socket 775. An i7 (socket 1366) isn't going to run in your motherboard made for a 775 CPU. Unless you have found a backward compatible 1366 mobo. Second, you may well be running ddr3 ram, but because of your mobo, it will be run either as ddr2 speeds (800mhz) or in dual channel mode. You are taking a big risk putting an i7 into the wrong type of motherboard as you could risk killing your CPU!
