50% off sale @ FS Dreamscapes

Ah, ok. Thanks. What does that mean then in terms of flying in FSX? non-commercial flying?
Strictly speaking, general aviation refers to all non-"scheduled air carrier" civilian aviation. So the airlines (majors and regionals) and big cargo outfits are not GA, and of course military flights aren't but everything else is - flight training in your Cesnas and Pipers, crop dusting, bizjets, aeromedical flights, you name it. In real life, it's the kind of operation, not the aircraft, that distinguishes GA from air carrier. In flight simming, that makes less sense, and some people use GA to refer to light aircraft (the cutoff weight that most people use implicitly is probably somewhere around 12,500lbs MGTOW) as distinct from larger aircraft like business jets.As for the Dreamscapes meshes, I have a few. The Hawai'i mesh is really good. I've flown around the Islands and noticed nothing too bad (some minor plateaus around some airports, but nothing horrendous, and a few little fingers around some of the particularly steep cliffs on Oahu. All in all, fewer issues than the FSGenesis mesh which I had before (not to say it was bad - I'm very happy with the FSGenesis products I've had). I also have Germany and Italy. I haven't flown much in Italy except tooling around the Alps, and the Dreamscapes meshes really are great in the mountains. Germany has some extreme plateaus around airports in the south - I don't have it installed at the moment. I'll probably pick up Switzerland and Austria during this sale, since I do love what the high-res mesh does for the mountains.EDIT - I also have the CA mesh. I've flown around the Bay area and the Owen's Valley, never had any problems.
that site is harrible. no pics or anything of the utah scenery and it's a beta? umm ok...
Don't buy Utah! it's 80GB of the most impressive mesh/photoscenery combination on earth and I wouldn't like to see this used by one "harrible" guy ;-)For the non-harrible folks: Dean's meshes are a treat for VFR-flyers. Half price is a great offer, I'll go and grab some more myself now :-)

NewChucky, thanks for the excellent explanation about GA. Much appreciated. I'm new to aviation, and I've learned a lot on this forum thanks to all the helpful responses.

FSGenesis might have it's drawbacks, but comparing to the price of the ProMesh, it's a bargain! You get worldwide coverage & detailed USA for $125!! If I think that I am getting for my galaxy membership both meshes for FSX and FS9, spitting as high as $50 (-50% right now) PER COUNTRY, it just doesn't cut it.If ProMesh offered all in one package similar to galaxy membership, for some $250, that would be something...

You and me both. :(

That's a fair point. I only get the ProMesh products in places where I think the added resolution (both horizontal and vertical) will make a difference - which is to say, where there are big ole mountains.

And where photoscenery is. The 5m mesh does make a big difference with VFR Germany, even in the flat north. You can see how accurate the mesh is - for example when highways are lower than the surrounding terrain or when manmade sandpits exactly match. For Europe, I have FS Dreamscapes's meshes for Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Great Britain, and during the 50% off deal I got myself France and Spain. And they DO improve immersion. Start from LIPA with and without Dean's mesh. The difference is amazing.

Yes, I agree from screenshots that they deliver unseen quality until now. But simply too pricey if you want world coverage - for someone who flies high and big distances.

As you do, I consider the $125 I paid for a lifetime "Galaxy" membership to be money very well spent. As is, FSG mesh provides an excellent "base layer..."For more highly detailed areas, one simply need to install that mesh at a higher layer than FSG's mesh.Using the freeware hi-res mesh from here at AVSIM, and then adding Frank's fabulous hi-res mountain scenery above that mesh layer has resulted in a totally transformed "Alps" for eastern France, Switzerland, Austria and northern Italy!

I hope they will cover the PNW region soon.
Not sure what you mean David. FTX PNW does not need any improvement. PNW's own mesh is excellent just like all the other features of this milestone product.Wolfgang

Thanks for the heads up, I grabbed the Great Britain mesh as that's where I do most of my VFR flying. Noticeable difference in Scotland with the 4.5m mesh. Fantastic! :(

Hi guys,Thanks for the comments, we're working on airport plateau fixes for all airports and not just punching holes in the mesh like MSFT did and others... Realize though that for Europe and the USA that there are thousands of airports that all need to be hand traced around the perimeter of the airport and that takes time. I'm outsourcing a team in another country to do the traces but there's literally tens of thousands of airports in FSX and most are in the USA and Europe...The problem with the plateaus are not with the mesh, they're a problem with FSX only being able to render airports on a flat piece of ground. There are fixes that can be done using ADE from ScruffyDuck to blend your favorite airport into the terrain... We were expecting FS11 to come out that we hoped would allow for sloped runways but since Microsoft canned the product we're now in the process of developing version 3.0 of the meshes (which will be a free upgrade to all customers) and we'll continue to improve the quality of the product over time as technology allows.Think about it this way, the airport plateaus are a limitation of FSX, and have been a limitation of FS since version 1.0... Justin has only recently started to punch holes around the airport to allow the default mesh underneath to show through. Being that many airports are off from their real world locations we have chosen to fix airport plateaus and move all airports to their real location once we develop the photoscenery for the areas. The point is we shouldn't go punching holes in the data when the default airport is not in the correct location... We're providing the canvas for other developers to build upon and have things geospatially correct...Also for the rest of the world, the FS Genesis mesh is great with the SRTM and deFerranti data. Justin is a friend of ours and we highly recommend his SRTM data for areas not covered by the NEXTMap ProMesh data. The difference with the USA though is that the 10m data Justin has is very very old data, sometimes up to 60 years old and some is from 16bit source which leads to stair stepping and tiger striping on the mesh. Also you lose details such as new interstate freeways cut through mountains etc etc etc... The Intermap data is significantly improved at 5m resolution...For Europe there's no comparison between 90m post space srtm data which has a lot of holes and voids and errors +/- 20m (RMSE) vertically compared to 5m post space data with RMSE in the range of +/-1m vertically...As for Utah, it's currently pre-order and the beta version is currently available now as a preliminary download while we await the master water data set to be generated professionally which is not far away. We're about to launch California fully complete with water mapping soon.Cheers,Dean.
