SCENERY.CFG file error

Local scenery directory (Addon Scenery/SCENERY) in scenery Area.115 not foundI'm getting this error message on start up. Doesn't seem to affect anything - I don't have add on scenery unless FScene4X counts - and I don't think it does. I did some re-installs of FSX after it began to lock up on start up. I think the lock up was caused by a faulty logbook file but I'm not certain. Did at least two re-installs to get it all working. But now it's giving me this error on start up.I'd like to get to the bottom of this error as I'm now having problems with other add ons.Thanks,Doni7-960 3.20 GHz, HDD 1.5TB SATA-II, Asus P6T Intel X58, 6GB DDR3/1800MHz, NVIDIA GeForce GTX285 1GB, SSD 128GB KINGSTON, Win7[64 bit], FSX SP2, FScene4X

When you un-installed FSX it sounds as if you did not throughly check your system to remove the numerous files and folders which were left behind by the un-install routine. The only things which it removes are things which were installed from the CD's - the scenery.cfg and FSX.cfg and other items were created after you started the sim so they are left behind. They all need to be removed if you expect to get a good clean re-installation.The above items are in "hidden" folders and the files themselves are "hidden" also if memory serves - so be sure to tick the "show hidden files and folders" option when searching. The scenery.cfg which FSX uses is NOT the one in the main FSX folder, that is only a backup of the required default items. On my XP setup, the scenery.cfg which FSX uses is located here:C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\FSXThe location of this file differs depending upon the Operating System in use.If this happening to me, I would first look at my scenery.cfg file (using Notepad) and see what scenery is listed under area 115.On my system, it is the folder named Addon scenery. If it is the same on yours, then start FSX and go to the Scenery Library and see if Addon scenery is listed and is "active". It should be. Also double check the spelling and also check to see that there is actually a folder under Flight Simulator X named Addon scenery - it should have a scenery and texture subfolder also.Hope these thoughts may be helpful.

Hi,I also get an error message on start up, ie, Scenery.cfg file error. Invalid Remote scenery path in Area.125. However, when I open the Scenery.cfg folder with Notepad , Area.125 it doesn't exist. The last listed is Area.120.Thoughts ?Jack

Probably the easiest way to troubleshoot this is to open the Scenery Library dialogue in FSX, and delete all but the required entries. Then if the game starts properly (no error message) add them back in one or two at a time - testing after each addition. That "should" rebuild the scenery.cfg file properly.I would print out a copy of your current scenery.cfg file first though so you can double check to see if all of the entries actually exist on your system.

Check you Addon Scenery directory and make sure you have a Scenery Dir within that folder. I had the same error due to the fact that the scenery dir was not in the addon folder. This is area 125 in you scenery cfg even though you can't see it.Sean

Are you sure you were looking at the correct scenery.cfg file? The one used by FSX is not the one in the main FSX folder (a common error). The path to the one used by FSX will vary depending on whether you are running XP, or Vista/Win 7 -- it is sometimes hard to find but try a search for it and two or three may pop up -- the largest one or the one with the most recent file date is likely the correct one.Rick

I had several airports listed in the Addon Scenery file that did not show up in the Scenery Library. Deleting them got rid of the error message.Jack

Thanks Opa for your detailed response. I found the two Scenery.cfg files and they are identical. As in your case, the Addon scenery is area 115 and it is active - first line on my scenery library settings. There is however no folder or subfolder called Addon scenery in the scenery folder in FSX. This is probably because I have not added any scenery yet, but I don't know.I went ahead and created the folders to make it look like they exist - even though they are empty. Still gives the same error message on start up.Thanks again for your help. Any more ideas?Cheers,Don

Addon scenery is not typically located in the Scenery folder, but in the FSX main folder.

Thanks for this Bert. Moved the Addon scenery folder from Scenery folder up to FSX folder. Still no luck. Getting "Invalid Remote scenery path in scenery Area.115"Cheers,Don

It must have a scenery and texture subfolder under it:Microsoft Flight Simulator X---------Addon scenery--------------scenery--------------textureAll that "should" have been created during the installation process.

That's what I now have, but I had to create it - it wasn't put there during the install - and the scenery & texture folders are empty.BTW the config file in Win7 (64 bit) is in the directory: .../users/yourusername/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/FSX

Interesting -I have Win 7 64 bit also - with FSX installed in a new folder named FSGames (C:\FSGames\Microsoft Flight Simulator x)My scenery.cfg (the one FSX actually writes info to) is located here: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSXProgramData is a "hidden" folder of course.

Neither FSX files nor Microsoft folder in my \ProgramData\ folder. I have two scenery config files - one in the main FSX folder (which is on my J drive - SSD exclusively for FSX) - the other is in C/.../users/yourusername/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/FSX.Cheers,Don

Don't believe you have specifically told us if the error message has gone away since you created the missing Addon scenery folder (with it's two subfolders). :(
