May 8, 201016 yr I've upgraded from an E6700 that I could OC safely to 3.4 Ghz, to a Q9650 that will not OC at all. Not even a 5% OC. Any attempt to OC, the computer will not even attempt to boot.My motherboard is an ASUS P5N-D which I've upgraded from a P5N-E SLI, the cooler is a Arctic Cooler 7 Pro. This Q9650 Idles in the 50C range according to CoreTemp. The ASUS Probe shows a CPU temp of 61C at Idle. Running Prime 95my temps with CoreTemp are in the 60C range ASUS Probe shows 70C or so.Has anyone else had trouble OC the Q9650?Thanks,Donald E. Donovan Donald E. May 8, 201016 yr You need to play around with the voltages to OC the quad. Start with a vcore bump and see if that helps. Also remember that quads put more strain on the FSB/MCH than duals, so these likely need voltage bumps as well.
May 8, 201016 yr My Vcore is 1.35volts and had to bump up the memory voltage to 1.67 vs. 1.65 stock for 8gig of ram. My ram is 1600mhz and had to down clock to 1400mhz and FSB to 1400mhz to retain 8-8-8-24 timings on the ram. My temps are anywhere between 29*-38*C idle depending on the ambient air in the house. Running memtest on max settings I have seen the temp hit 70* once or twice and overclocked to 3.6Ghz and 4 gig of ram,my temps where 80* max. With your idle temps being that high, you allready have a handicap on your overclock. Maybe some new Artic silver 5 or new cooler will do. You would have to post some more specs on your computer, ram frequency and timings and some voltage specs from your bios.

DonovanLuckily I was able to get a decent overclock ..., 3.825 Ghz, FSB at 425 x 9 and DDR2 9200 Ram timings of 5-5-4-12 with 333/1066 for the divider. Other settings including voltages were CPU at 1.3500V, NB 1.37V, RAM 2.23V, Thermal management; disabled and C1; disabled.fsb and core voltage should be enough, the rest adjust itselfmake shure the memory is at a proper speed ..try 1022Good luckStef AMD 9950X3D, Nvidia 5080, custom-made liquid-cooled OEM Virpl throttle, Control panel, and Collective Gufighter flightstick

You even made assumptions on RAM clocking without knowing what memory he is using! 1022MHz could be an extreme overclock if he's using slower ram. :Hypnotized: To Donald: Give a good list of your system specs. I realize that you mentioned your processor and motherboard but to help we need the whole picture.I'll also mention those idle temperatures seem rather high for such a non impressive overclock. Maybe a re-seat is in order but let's get the basics, first:-System Specs-Bios Settings (FSB, Multiplyer, Vcore, RAM speed/timings, ETC)The Q9650 processor is a good overclocker. You'll be able to get that processor to 3.9GHz+ with some work. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
April 4, 201115 yr The system I had before this one was the Evga 780i with 1200MHz memory at 5-4-4-12 and a Q9650 at 4.32GHz.I don't remember the settings I had but it took me a full week and 1/2 to get there stress testing with OCCT, with the right settings the Q9650 will do 4.0GHz without breaking a sweat.
April 4, 201115 yr YouWhat I was trying to say was, make sure your psu is performing alright. When testing with OCCT look at the volt lines, had a bad 5V line once and wasted a lot of tme and effort. The Q9650 has "OC-holes", certain frequencies where it simply won't run well. So, if you're stuck at 3,8 try 4.0. DonovanI just installed one a week ago or so and it runs great at 3.76Ghz DRAM 1661Mhz 8-8-8-20 CR-1 at 1.35v in the BIOS. I'm currently unwilling to go beyond 1.35v. I dialed FSB to 420 and she ran fine at 1.35v, but I have not stress tested it yet as I had w/ my current settings. Seems like a pretty easy overclocker to me.Noel Noel System: 9900X3D Noctua NH-D15 G2, MSI Pro 650-P WiFi, G.SKILL 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000, WD NVMe 2Tb x 1, Sabrent NVMe 2Tb x 1, RTX 4090 FE, Corsair RM1000W PSU, Win11 Home, LG Ultra Curved Gsync Ultimate 3440x1440, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Case, TCA Boeing Edition Yoke & TQ, Cessna Trim Wheel, RTSS Framerate Limiter w/ Front Edge Sync. April 30, 201115 yr Moderator 50C at idle is too high. I just checked my rig - I have a 980X at 4.43ghz and it is idling right now at 32C. Ambient in this room is 21C.My 9650 is clocked to 3.88 and it's idling at 37C. Vcore is 1.30.Remove, clean and reseat the CPU/Cooler. If your heatsink isn't working properly and you'rre stating out at 50c, even a modest OC might push you over the thermal limits of the CPU.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160

I know Intel chipset-based boards overclock better, sorry for not stating that earlier.
