GEX or UTX?

Featured Replies

Hi all,I'm mighty confused between UTX and GEX. I mainly fly within Europe and would like your opinion on which addon to purchase.Grateful for any advice.Cheers

Both, they do different things and work well together. GEX is ground textures/autogen, and UTX is landclass, roads, railways, and night lighting. I suggest also getting a good base mesh, like FSGenesis or SceneryTech.

I already have UTX, and thinking about GEX.I definitley noticed a performance hit (FPS) with UTX.Would I notice a performance hit with GEX too?Its just FSX is running sweet at the moment and dont want to introduce an add on that will have a bad effect.

Most people report no hit, or even a performance increase with GEX. You can get it from Flight1, and if you don't like it you can return it for a refund within 30 days.

Right...very tempted to splash some cash now!!Thanks everyone for the comments. I'll get UTX for now and GEX after payday!!Cheers

The UTX setup tool tells you which items cause a performance hit. The most important features have little effect on performance.

How could you have a performance hit with UTX with a 4.0Ghz system? How is your system configured?

Its configured as per Nick Ns guide, and Nick Ns guide for UTX set up, dont get me wrong it runs nice and smooth. BUt UTX definitly has a noticabale hit for me.

Strange, I've been running UTX since day 1 on a Quad core 2.4GHz system and that give a slight performance hit and I have most everything turned on. I just overclocked to 3.2GHz and FSX runs smooth as liquid...It's been a while since I've looked at Nick's guide but when I read through it last time there's some definite things that I'd recommend contrary to his guide... I'll have to look it up again and give some feedback on it...

I tried both but uninstalled UTX and kept GEX just because of the performance hit caused by UTX. Also, I don't really care about autogen accuracy.. Only during night UTX improves visuals a lot but it kills FPS even more

HiI'd go for UTX before GEX. UTX is essential in my opinion, to get your roads and coastlines laid out properly, whereas for me GEX doesn't really look as realistic for typical British countryside as I thought it would. And I really just don't care much for autogen. I returned it using Flight1s excellent money-back service. I've not noticed much of a performance hit with UTX, but then I don't use traffic on roads etc.Horizon's excellent photo scenery and mesh is another option for the UK..Ian

I agree with the statements that UTX is more important than GEX, but they do work well together without much of a hit on performance. An update to UTX did create a lot of additional road traffic, and I believe Nick was one who said that vehicle traffic should be limited to 10%, which still displays a lot of traffic. Urban minor (residential) roads should be turned off, and 3D lights at night can be a hit. VFR flying without UTX, photo-scenery or some other add-on is ... well ... not VFR flying. For IFR flying, forget UTX and get a good weather program.FSX terrain textures and auto-gen placement were a big improvement, and GEX makes them even better. GEX textures work well with UTX, especially with the UTX urban land-class. It places a lot more commercial and high-rise buildings in these areas instead of houses. Every add-on has a negative side, and the problem I have with GEX is that these more numerous high-rise buildings often occur at the end of airport runways, blocking approaches as trees often do. I end up having to add auto-gen exclusions at runway ends whenever I visit an airport for the first time.
