May 25, 201016 yr Hi guys,I am having the dreaded Out Of Memory problem, and don't know how to fix it. I flew FS9 with no problems over the weekend, maybe a dozen or so flights. Yesterday morning, I tried to add three new sceneries and delete three sceneries I don't use anymore at the same time, as well as installing one new aircraft and deleting several others. I do this all the time, so am well versed in proper installation/deletion procedures. Upon trying to load FS9 after the changes were made, I received the Out Of Memory error. I searched this forum, and found several posts referencing this problem and fixes that people have found. I have tried them all, short of using the 3GB program (this makes me very nervous to use; I don't want to screw up my system, as it is running fine), but nothing has worked. I ran the FlightSim Manager program, fixing lots of errors and optimizing FS9 as best I could. Did not solve the problem. I defragged the disk drive over night, clearing up lots of space. I ran Disk Cleanup, flushed all my registries, and nothing worked. Does anybody have any ideas I might try, short of re-installing FS9 or using that 3GB program?I should mention that I had this error pop-up once before after installing 1 new aircraft. I deleted the aircraft, and the problem went away, never to return until now...Also, if I remember correctly, one of the posts on this forum mentioned something about doing something to the FS9 config file. I have not done this, because I have no idea where my config file is, and I have no idea how to find it. I tried the Windows Search program, typing in FS9.cfg (thinking that would be the name of the file), but no luck. Two Wordpad documents came up, neither of which is the config file.Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am starting to have FS9 withdrawal symptoms!!Thanks very much,Adam
May 25, 201016 yr Your fs9.cfg file is in your Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9.Just make sure you make your hidden files visible. The thing you can do with it at first is to make a safe copy of it and delete it.When you launch FS9 it will automatically be rebuilt. It may solve some problems.Remember though you will need to redo your FS settings.Don't be afraid of the 3GB switch. I was too initially. But nothing wrong happened and my OOMs disappeared for good. :( Before though you can make some cleaning but it will be time and effort consuming. For example:- check double AFCADs (use ScanAFD for instance)- remove or simply deactivate suspicious sceneries- remove suspicious AI aircraft (use ACA2007 to check if you like)- defrag your HD (regularly!)- make sure you don't have landclass files combined with Texture folders- use DXT3 aircraft textures instead of 32bit

I haven't seen an OOM in 5 years by following this regime.Dave

May 25, 201016 yr Author Thanks Rafal,I am having trouble finding my fs9.cfg file. I went to the folder you suggested, and there was a FS9.cfg text document file there. I copied it to a safe place, deleted it, and started FS9, but it never made a new one. I made sure that hidden files were visible, and nothing came up that looked like a config file. That leads me to believe that the cfg file that I saw, copied, and deleted, was not the right one. Where else could it be?I have defragged my drive and ran Disk Cleanup as the error message suggested. Didn't work.I did all those things you suggested using Flightsim Manager, and it did find lots of errors, landclass files where they did not belong, unused gauges (which I didn't know how to delete; I tried and it told me that I don't have the authority to delete them). I scanned basically every aspect of FS9. Sounds, sceneries, textures, panels, gauges, aircraft, AI aircraft, effects, you name it. Did not work.I just ran the ScanAFD program, and deleted all my duplicate AFCADs. Still OOM.What is a "suspicious scenery"? All my sceneries are, or were, working fine. What are "suspicious AI aircraft"? Where can I find ACA2007? It is not in the AVSIM file library, and when I do a search of the Internet, I get business proposals for ACA2007, and deadlines for them. How do I use DXT3 textures? When I download a texture, from AVSIM for example, it doesn't give me a choice of what kind of texture to use. I have several Payware aircraft, and those do give me a choice. I have gotten rid of textures from those two aircraft that I no longer use. Still no go.Thanks,Adam
May 25, 201016 yr Adam,1. We mean the fs9.cfg file, not the txt one. Open the cfg with a text editor, e.g. notepad.2. The ACA analyzers are here:http://aifs.pvdveen.net/3. As for DXT3 textures, there are many repaints in this format and authors usually inform about it in the readmeYou can convert textures on your own, using e.g. Imagetool from FS2004 Terrain SDK.http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/f...n_sdk_setup.exe4. Unused gauges take some space but will rather not harm your sim5. I used the term 'suspicious' meaning one that you may suspect of giving you trouble (e.g. OOM). That, however, tends to be hard to spy.6. As for defrag I suggest this great freeware programme: http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.htmlSit down and think: did your OOM trouble start after installing a specific addon?
May 25, 201016 yr Author Thanks Rafal,The only thing in that folder that says "FS9.cfg" is the text document. There is nothing else, even with the Show Hidden Files box checked. There is a "Scenery.cfg" file in the folder. This one is not a text document, but a proper cfg file.I ran the ACA2007 program, and it found some errors, but none were major. I am going to try your defrag program now. I used the default defrag program that comes with Windows, but maybe yours will work better. I'll keep you posted.Okay, I ran the defrag program, but still no go. As far as addons that could be causing this problem, all I can think are the three sceneries and one aircraft that I installed yesterday. I removed all four, but FS9 can't find them and the "Flight Simulator cannot find this scenery folder" error message comes up (for the three sceneries). So, I put them back in.Any other ideas I can try? Thanks,Adam
May 26, 201016 yr Moderator You can not NOT have an fs9.cfg file. The sim simply will not run without it.Apparently you haven't quite gotten all of the settings for showing hidden files and folders set properly,Did you unmark the entry to "Hide known file extensions?" Since .cfg is a "known file extension," having that enabled will not allow you to see the fs9.cfg file! Fr. May 26, 201016 yr How did you delete the sceneries? In particular--were the entries in the scenery.cfg removed for the deleted sceneries? Were there any dll files associated with the deleted/added scerny (i.e. bglman.dll)? If you just deleted the directories, or even ran the uninstaller, it's possible you still have references to scenery that does not exist in the config file. What were the sceneries in question?RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO Bob Scott | President and CEO, AVSIM Inc ATP Gulfstream II-III-IV-V Sys1 (MSFS20+24/XPlane12+11): AMD 9800X3D, water 2x240mm, MSI MPG X670E Carbon, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, nVidia RTX4090FE Alienware AW3821DW 38" 21:9 GSync, 2x4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2x2TB Samsung 990 SSD, EVGA 1000P2 PSU, 12.9" iPad Pro Thrustmaster TCA Boeing Yoke, TCA Airbus Sidestick, Twin TCA Airbus Throttle quads, PFC Cirrus Pedals, Coolermaster HAF932 case Sys2 (P3Dv5/v4): i9-13900KS, water 2x360mm, ASUS Z790 Hero, 32GB GSkill 7800MHz CAS36, ASUS RTX4090 Samsung 55" JS8500 4K TV@60Hz, 3x 2TB WD SN850X 1x 4TB Crucial P3 M.2 NVME SSD, EVGA 1600T2 PSU Fiber link to Yamaha RX-V467 Home Theater Receiver, Polk/Klipsch 6" bookshelf speakers, Polk 12" subwoofer, 12.9" iPad Pro PFC yoke/throttle quad/pedals with custom Hall sensor retrofit, Thermaltake View 71 case, Stream Deck XL button box Sys3 (DCS/P3Dv4/ATS/ETS): AMD 7800X3D, MSI MPG X870E Carbon, Noctua NH-D15S, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, EVGA RTX3090 Alienware AW3420DW 34" 21:9 GSync, Corsair HX1000i PSU, 4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2TB Samsung 970Evo Plus, TM TCA Officer Pack, Saitek combat pedals, TM Warthog, TM RS300 FF wheel/pedals, Coolermaster HAF XB case
May 26, 201016 yr Adam,I routinely convert all aircraft textures to DXT3; there is no perceptible quality hit and loading times are much faster. You can either use Martin Wright's DXTBmp program to individually convert the 32-bit files, or another of his programs, Convim which will batch-convert. (here http://www.btinternet.com/~mnwright/).A good strict routine with scenery/aircraft addition and removal meant that I never had a FS9 OOM event with XP (and never used the 3Gb switch) and it has not happened yet in W7, although as 7 will address all the installed memory, I guess that's not likely.Once you find your fs9.cfg file (and as Bill said, you can't not have one! Try using the Windows search facility, making sure you tell it to search hidden files and folders), I'd recommend making a shortcut to it from your desktop. That way you always have easy access.;)

I had just opened FS9, and gone to the Add/Remove Scenery screen, added the scenery I wanted and removed the scenery I didn't. I then closed FS9, and attempted to restart it to finish the procedure. This is where I am now. FS9 is "Building database for new scenery files". It gets to 100%, and FS9 is Out Of Memory pops up.I didn't get as far as FS9 recognizing that several sceneries were now disabled and I can delete them, and several others were now enabled and I can use them, you know what I mean? The three sceneries I installed were EPWA2010, EPGD_2008, and WRO2009. There were no .dll files that I know of associated with these sceneries.I haven't deleted the entries in scenery.cfg. Should I do that manually? Or is that something FS9 does on its own?I took the sceneries out of the folder and pasted them to my desktop, but then FS9 tells me that it can't find the scenery, so I put them back in. This includes the sceneries I was going to delete anyway, plus the scenery I was trying to install. Thanks,Adam
May 26, 201016 yr Author Well, I finally found my FS9.cfg file. I renamed it, and attempted to load FS9. No go. Out Of Memory, still. Any other ideas? Thanks guys,Adam

Run that, select renumber areas, and see if you can clean up your scenery.cfg file with it. It appears to me that something is amiss there...maybe areas or layers out of order, or a reference to a missing directory.
