GTX 470 Performance Woes

Featured Replies

I picked up a GTX 470 yesterday hoping to give my older system a shot in the arm. Unfortunately though performance is actually worse after upgrading from an 8800 GT. I was sure to uninstall the older drivers, run Driver Sweeper in safe mode, and install the latest version of DirectX. I'm at a loss at this point and thought I'd seek some feedback before returning the card. Here are my specs:Dell Dimension 9200Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 (1.86GHz)Windows 7 Ultimate4GB RAMCorsair 650W PSUThanks guys.Dave

Thanks guys.Dave
Wow Dave, you are being HEAVILY limited by that CPU!! no idea why performance would be worst, doesn't make much sense. Just check the following:Make sure YOU ARE using the BP=0 tweak.. and also the LATEST Beta 2xx nvidia driversand I really suggest you DO upgrade your CPU to match that video card! those components are not a good match.

I still suspect that the 182.50 drivers provide better raw performance (at lower visual quality) than the latest 257 drivers...so in a CPU limited system, that may come into play..

Hi *******,Just out of interest does the BP tweak work in FS9? and if so what line do you have to insert in FS9.cfgMany thanks,Chris

The CPU is too slow for a 470, you are starving the 470.The CPU can not provide enough information fast enough to the 470 for the 470 to be effective.

With a fast CPU and the right adjustments the GTX 470 is a rocketship. See below my signature for settings.Stephen

Thanks all - I was hoping the 470 could make up for the lack of processor power. I returned the card and ordered a new PC with a 480 included. Thanks again./Dave

The question is what do you guys consider the lowest possible cpu to run a 470? and Im not talking about the I7 here I know they will run it well but what about the others?

No one's really tested this yet that I know of but I'd guess once you get to the point of a quad core @ 3GHz you start to see diminishing returns after that. A dual core around the same speed should be enough to get the card jump started.
