June 10, 201015 yr Hello,I don't fly props that often but when I do, it is usually the Lionheat Kodiak or the Aerosoft Twin Otter. I have an annoying problem and I am not sure if it is a problem with the product or I am doing something wrong. If I am doing something wrong, please enlighten me.When I start the engines, the Kodiak lurches forward even with the parking brake on. It will accelerate to 50kts before settling down. The Twin Otter does the same thing but the parking brake holds it in place - on water, the result is the same as the Kodiak. When I start the engines, throttle is at idle.So what am I doing wrong? Or is this a flaw in the FDE? If it is a flaw, how can I fix it? June 10, 201015 yr Jeff:This is what I hate the most about the Aerosoft Twin Otter (I don't have the Kodiak). It is a recognized problem with Aerosoft's turbojet flight model (others have noted this problem on their forum), but Aerosoft is unable or unwilling to do anything about it. I bought the Twotter because everybody said it was great - apparently, they don't mind the fact that it jumps over the airport fence when you first start up the engines! The other selling point was that it comes with both floats and skis. Only trouble is, you can't start the darn thing on water or snow becuse it will spin around uncontrollably after the first engine starts! (I know there are ways to try to counteract this through manipulation of the throttles into reverse, etc., but this is maddening and unrealstic.) To me, the Twotter's unrealistic startup behavior is completely unacceptable and is the main reason why I never, ever fly it (not to mention its low-quality cockpit textures and invisible float rudders).PMDG showed everyone the right way to model turboprop start up behavior with their JS4100 (which is great) - the engines are started unfeathered, I believe, so they do not generate unrealistic thrust upon start up. I enjoy FSX but I spend more time with higher quality flight simulators (IL2 1946, LOMAC, DSC Black Shark, Rise of Flight), all of which tend to have much more realistic flight modeling than the included FSX planes and most payware for FSX (of course, the very best FSX payware planes do have excellent flight models, such as PMDG, A2A, RealAir, Carenado, VRS and Lotus--those are the only ones I will fly). It is amazing to me that so many FSX users seem willing to accept the lack of realism in so many of the lesser-brand payware models (maybe they just don't know how much better some of the other flight sim modeling is?). Then again, so many FSX users seem to like flying with 2d cockpits (it's a cartoon, people!) or dumbed down procedures (Ctrl E is a good way to spoil the fun) or flight dynamics. To me, that is a complete waste of time (but I have no problem with others' enjoyment of it!).Major V
June 10, 201015 yr That is definately one of the annoying things about the Kodiak, what I do on start is throw the switches and then advance the "condition" lever about three presses (using the keyboard) - that should start it up without shooting you straight across the field, any more and you go rocketing away !!! I also ended up edited the Aircraft.cfg to make it more stable in flight .. .. ..G Gary Davies aka "Gazzareth" Simming since 747 on the Acorn Electron
June 10, 201015 yr Author I honestly don't mind the lighter products if they are flyable. There has to be something causing this that can be edited. Or maybe I am doing something wrong. I don't see how a product like the Twin Otter could get so many good reviews with this problem. June 10, 201015 yr Yes i to have the same problem and find it very annoying, and the payware P-12 the same thing happens which leads me to believe it's the turbo props that are doing it . I posted here about it a month or so ago and some one said it was a microsoft issue. The other thing i find with it that get's me is when you take off and are suppose to bring the prop back to below 1,700 and you'll notice it jumps up and down or like it (bobbs up and down )and the same thing when you go full prop foward to land , so ya i hate it to. Also i run high dollar precision flight controls for yoke and throttle quadrent and find it very hard and frustrating trying to set the throttle for it and the P-12 as it's always too much or not enough and very hard to taxi. So your not alone bud. Louis Louis Massicotte Caroline Alberta
June 11, 201015 yr For the Kodiak:1. Parking break SET2. Switches to on (battery, etc).3. Conditioner at 0%4. Turn on the started switch 5. Once NG hits 11%, move up the conditioner to about 5%Voila.Common mistake with the Kodiak (at least the similated one) is to turn on the starter switch with the conditioner set too high and before NG reaches 11%
June 11, 201015 yr The solution for the Twin Otter is to adjust the throttle to about 3% reverse thrust (use the keyboard for this, F2 will do) and then start the engines as usal. You're absolutely right, Sir, this is an annoying feature bit with this 3% reverse you'll even get her started on water without jumping to the destination airport :( As for the KodiakThanks for the tips, I'll try that too. This one does need optimization in nearly all its characteristics I think but besides that, her manual states to advance the condition levers to about 40% before starting and this will get you "up in the air" while still at parking position. :( I tried the reverse thrust setting on her like I did on the Twin Otter and received a plane tilted upwards then.Get a laugh on me when I tell you that in the past I started her up, "flew" about half across the airport and then used the slew function of FSX to get her back to the parking position. The floats version is even trickier.Make sure to connect to online flying after startup :(
June 11, 201015 yr Author The idea of starting with a % of reverse thrust doesn't work if you use a Saitek TQ. To activate the reverse on the TQ, you need to program a button to decrease throttle and repeat while pushed within FSUIPC. Even if you start with the throttles in full reverse, the aircraft will lurch forward before reverse kicks in. This seems a lot more realistic with most aircraft because throttle increase/decrease isn't instantaneous. The default Caravan doesn't do this so what is the difference between the Caravan's FDE and the ones in question? June 11, 201015 yr There is one thing that works, but only when you first lod the plane, if you land amd try a restart it wont. You need to set the props to minimum using ctrl F1 i think it is, this usualy stops the plane lurching forward, but i found on the kodiak itdoesnt work if you hit the starter to often. Thats justa fsx enhancement. Of course then you have to hit ctrl F4 to set the prop at max b4 youtake off or you will belacking power..
June 11, 201015 yr Nice article on flying the Twotter up in the Scottish Isles in Airliner World this month by the way. Worth a read if you like the aircraft and fly airliner routes with it.Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
June 11, 201015 yr Author Thanks again for all the advice.I tried the suggestions with the Kodiak and they didn't work. I have also emailed Lionheart. These are the only two props that I really like and I can't fly either of them. For those that are having unresolved issues, are you using Acceleration?I found this thread at FSDeveloper that seems to attribute the problem to Acceleration.http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18395When I first bought the Kodiak, I was using my old system that didn't have Acceleration. The Kodiak was fine back then. I only noticed this issue when I installed it on my new system with Acceleration. June 11, 201015 yr As far as I can tell ... using the F2 key to set up the 3% reverse thrust DOES work, as long as you don't touch your joystick at this time. The keyboard commands overrides the joystick input until the throttles on your stick are touched again.I've tried this on some models, currently Logitech G940 with FSUIPC set up to use the throttle range for reverse thrust too.Don't know about Saiteks exactly but you should give the F2 key a try :( Again: This solution only corresponds to the Twin Otter which can be started this way. The Kodiak is another case, have to try your suggestions there this weekend.
June 11, 201015 yr Author I have a lot of different key assienments because of AES and EZDok. What is f2 mapped to? June 12, 201015 yr I have a lot of different key assienments because of AES and EZDok. What is f2 mapped to?FSX itself calls it "Throttle (decrease quickly)" under category "Engines" and it normally just works to get into beta range step by step or quick if the key is hold.My sympathy for using different key assignments: Although keyboards have 100+ keys ... you never have enough when using addons :)
