What's with people always using default panels?

Featured Replies

I've always seen a lot of repaints of freeware exterior models from developers such as POSKY, and some of them have been created for FSX (not to mention the Jet2 752WL repaint by Ben Thomson), but on those repaints, all the panels were default, even on models such as those created by Aerodesigns, who usually make custom panels for their A319 models. What's up with these? Are the default panels that good? Is the default Beech King Air panel better than the ones by Pierre Fasseux/Marcos Gama?

It's freeware -- developers aren't likely to spend a lot of time developing something (years) on which they'll not get a return besides donations. The only exception to this is the fantastic Tinmouse 737-200ADV model.

No there's more, the Tinmouse is not the only freeware airplane that features detailed panels - -the Project Tupolev planes for example (Tu-154B2; Tu-154M, IL-62M);-some of the Samdim Design offerings (namely The Tu-114, An-24, Yak-42)-the SCS Tu-134;-the AFG Caravelle;-the Michel Migaud and co. Socata TBM;-the Alexey Yuzefov and co. Yakovlev Yak-18T-Xomer's An-2-the RFP 747-200-the iFly 747-400etc.....etc......

In these cases just change the panels to what you want. Its what the rest of us do. The default panels are given because they would work for everyone, as everyone has them so no-one is excluded from enjoying the repaints. People who are just starting with FS will be using the default panels for example. With the default panels nothing has to be included, just a link inside the panel.cfg is needed. Also giving the full panel would make the download bigger, why do that when everyone who wants a more detailed panel can just download it separately once and put it in. Why download the same panel over and over again with each repaint?

Well, the default panel just won't do for me. I always have a fast download at home and even downloading a 100MB+ file was completely trouble free. People who start using FS and want something different from the default panels, would normally use panels with default gauges. Normally this shouldn't be a problem, as these are easy to use panels. Note that when you look at some of the other models (such as Mike Stone's C-17 or Paul Clawson's McDonnell Douglas FH-1 Phantom) they have included full panels, however those file sizes are downsized to at least below 2MBs. While the Mike Stone models only includes a 2D panel, the Paul Clawson models includes virtual cockpits as well.

To expand on that answer, freeware developers will develop what they are interested in - it's a hobby after all. If they enjoy creating repaints then that's what they will do. It's quite possible those who do that are simply not interested in developing panels - so why should they?I think we should be grateful to anyone who offers us freeware and refrain from critising them because they don't offer exactly what we want.

Exactly. To the OP, if you're looking for high quality panels, you're going to have to step over to payware developers.

Or alternatively, get FS Panel Studio and knock one up yourself, which isn't actually too hard to manage.Al

Like I said earlier just change it to something more to your liking.

Then develop your own and offer it to other users.

HelloWhile it is nice of your parents to provide you with a high speed Internet connection spare a thought for those less fortunate, many folk around the world are still on dialup if they are lucky. What is it with this me,me,me attitude nowadays? , I just don't get it.

I am actually surprised that no one has decided to produce add on virtual cockpits for FSX - payware or freeware. Since FSX allows VC's to be added/swapped with FSX native aircraft, I have always hoped that someone would take up the challenge. I definitely thought someone like Sky Decks would tackle vc's.
