Am I the only one - 2D Panels ?

Featured Replies

All, Not sure if Carenado reads this - but - am I the only one that misses the 2D panels??? I still find it sooo much easier to fly with a nice 2D panel option rather than trying to zoom around the cockpit to make the various knob twists and gauge views big enough to see... Don't get me wrong - I like having the VC as well but I find I spend most time on the 2D views... I've been a big fan of Carenado since the release of the Cherokee 180... I still think the flight model on the 180 is one of the best they ever produced... I haven't purchased anything from Carenado since the release of the Arrow IV due to the lack of 2D panels... Just one former customer who would like to start flying Carenado aircraft again... My nickels worth...Regards,Scott

I am sure there are other who miss 2D panels, but I do think most simmers don't... 2D panels are more and more a thing of the past, it seems, and lots of devs, like Carenado, don't offer them anymore. I am afraid you either have to get used to VC's or keep on flying old releases, because I don't see a 2D panel revival coming...You might consider getting TrackIR and then start using the VC only. It's so much more real imho and easy as can be! I can understand that if you are really happy with 2D panels, the switch to the VC can be hard, but the VC's are very high res nowadays and look just as good and detailed as any old 2D panel.

No, you are not the only one. I know of at least 2 others. But I have not used a 2D panel since FS98. You might find a suitable 2D panel for download at avsim. Instructions would be included.

Hello Scott, you could ofcourse try and make your own 2D panel. Not too difficult as the gauges are already made. :(

Hi Ed, Good point... I've dabbled in this area before (not on your level) and I have the panel builder software... I also have some experience building and texturing 3D models... Thanks for the suggestion... Honestly - I thought more folks preferred the 2D panels... Quick question - did you ever do any more GA airports like Glens Falls ??? I've been absent for a while and haven't been keeping up... Very impressive little scenery - sir...Regards,Scott

I never used 2D panels. The fixed forward view makes me feel like I am paralyzed from the neck down while having tunnel vision, which results in a complete lack of situational awareness (how do you look for other traffic and landmarks off the main course in front of you?). The panel itself is everything but realistic, which makes the immersion factor equal to zero for me. It's only good for IFR training in my book. Just a simulator, while I strive to forget that I'm actually sitting in front of a sim. I want to make it feel as real as possible, which makes 2D panels completely inadequate for me. ;)

I use 2D-panel most of the time. I think most 3D-panels have to small figures and are difficult to read. However I use two aircrafts with 3D-panels, Sibwings SAAB-Safir(payware) and Piper PA-22 tripace(freeware). With 3D-panels like these two I may use 3D-panels more. I also tried the Track IR and agree with all that bouncing around gives me a headache as well.

The much maligned 2D panel. I love them!I have Track IR5 which I use on occasion for Helis and GA but as a very much an IFR pilot I do find all that bouncing, zooming in etc quite annoying in the end.(I love it post production in my videos though!)Having said that Carenado's VC's are now very good and I am more than happy to use them. I would rather have the FS2004 models without 2D panels than no models at all!Oh and if you know what you are doing, to have a moving prop in your 2D panel is simply a case of getting your viewpoint in the right position. As is shown below .....you can just about make out the prop shadow in the second pic .fsscr102-3.jpgfsscr117-2.jpg

Me Too!I also miss the 2D panels and usually prefer them. I concede that some of the new 3D VC panels are acceptable and much improved (F33 Bonanza and Luscombe for example). However, adding your own items like RwyInfo, Timers, isg Gauges, Toggles, FuelStat, etc. is a pain in the XXX to say the least if not downright impossible in some 3d panels. Fortunately, 2D Panels can be added without too much trouble to some. For example, I have the old V35 as well as the new F33. The V35 2D panel was adaptable to the F33 easily. Respectfully:RTH

Thanks folks...While I really haven't tried the newer VC's - I do recall one I found that was happy using a while back... That little freeware C152 done by that guy in France... What a remarkable little plane and it didn't have a 2D panel either... It was a very simple panel though and didn't require many knob turns or close looks...Regards,Scott

Y'know, that ticks me off. I've seen that 152 referenced in multiple "must have" lists, all with the same link to the same website, and I cannot find any way to download it. Is there a secret handshake, code ring, or maybe I'm just not holding my mouth right? How in heck do you download that airplane?!?blink.gif

YES! I wonder why that would never pop up before? Now my kids are on my sim computer, and I must wait....I thought that was the same link as I'd seen several times before, but I've NEVER seen the password bit there. Is that a different link than I've seen?edit: I'm a moron. I never thought about my AdBlock Plus was blocking the password bit. Once I disabled ABP for the page, it showed up.

I too long for more 2D panels, my eyesight works better with them.
