May 12, 201115 yr Hello B737 friends!Just a quick question : I would like to check on what airports I can operate the B737 (mainly 800) on my Orbx sceneries PNW and NRM. Therefore I would like to know the average runway lengh needed to take off and land the NG! I know the TOW, WX parameters or airport elevation need to be taken into account (I guess TOPCAT will become my friend for this) but I just want a rough idea just to sort a list of potential departure and destination airport. Thanks in advance!Pierre Lainé

May 12, 201115 yr The airline GOL is operating flights to Santos Dumont (SBRJ) airport which has a ~1300m runway. I think that's the feasible minimum length for the 737NG. "A life is like a garden. May 12, 201115 yr Author Thank you for the informations!Very useful link by the way and a landing on 1300 m runway must be visually amazing^^Pierre Lainé
May 12, 201115 yr I have a friend who works for GOL as a FA. He actually lives in another state here in Brazil and last month he came to Rio. Not as a FA, but as a passenger. He could fly in the jumpseat that day. Was his first landing at SBRJ in the cockpit and he said that he kept looking to the runway and thinking "can we land there???" He said the runway seen from the air looks VERY small (actually it really is (only 1600m of runway until you fall in the water)) and you have the impression that you simply are not gonna make it. May 12, 201115 yr Commercial Member Yep, SBRJ with the Short Field Package has to be up there.I landed on Runway 8 at KBUR about 6 months ago - that was pretty cool, 5800 feet, so not quite as short as SBRJ, but it's still one of the shortest in the US that has regular NG flights. SWA actually ran a 300 off the runway there about 10 years ago... Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com

I would love to be in the jumpseat to experience a landing there, especially if it was going to be on 02L/R.Sean Campbell Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator

A guy in a shack closes a gate every time a plane wants to use the runway. He didn't seem to mind a couple of Americans hanging out watching planes for the afternoon. I have to say, the GOL 73's sure use up every last bit of runway, very little margin for error before they go swimming. Lee Barber - Rochester, NY PPL-G

It's just like that road at the very beginning of runway 10 at Princess Juliana Int'l you see in some videos. Although that island is military propriety, 'anyone' can go there and watch the planes landing and taking off. I've never had the opportunity to go there yet, but must be awesome, just stand there seeing the 737s, A320s and E-Jets almost hitting your head. Matheus Mafra
May 12, 201115 yr Google Maps shows there is a soccer field adjacent to the airport. Is that part of the Navy School? "A life is like a garden. We then went over the to the guard shack at the end of 02L/R and then after the plane landed that was on approach, we walked over to the Marine School that Matheus mentioned and stayed for about 1/2 an hour or so and took some pics. It was pretty cool and I am surprised that we were allowed to walk over there. If I was alone I probably wouldn't have been able to do it since I speak very little Portuguese, but my girlfriend was with me and she speaks Portugues and was able to talk to the guard and cross to the other side. That road leads to what we call here of Escola Naval (Marine School). You need to go sometime and cross the runway and go to the other side by the school and stand by the guard shack over there and check it out. Lots of cool photo opportunities as well as fun to watch the planes landing. Here in the US, you would never be allowed to get that close. Here's a few pics I took when I was over by the Marine School. Double click them to get the full size.BTW Matheus, what part of Rio do you live in?Sean Campbell Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
May 12, 201115 yr Moderator Woah, that is a nice airport! Will be good to try out with the NGX! Is there any good scenery for SBRJ?Pierre LainéNot really, just the Tropical Sim version, but it is very dated looking. I am currently using it since there isn't much else to choose from like there was for FS9. There is however a guy named Newton that made MegaRioV9 for FS9 and is doing the same package for FSX and is getting close to release. Its also freeware and you can find more details a terre-brasilis.org. His project looks pretty good so far, but I really miss the World Sceneries Rio for FS9, but another company called XScena is going to do a bunch of new Brasilian sceneries pretty soon as payware.Sean Campbell Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
May 12, 201115 yr I live in Rio and have never been there. Weird, isn't it? But it's true. I live in an neighborhood named Sulacap. It's not very close to the beach . My house is nearby Campo dos Afonsos AFB (SBAF). I can see the C-130 flying low on final approach to runway 08 or taking off from runway 26. I can also see the parachute execises they do in the surroundings. Sean, the pictures you took from the airport are amazing. I'm wondering why I've never been there . I REALLY have to take a day off and spend it there.EDIT: Pierre, regarding scenery for any airport in Brazil, I'd even say in South America, your only option is Tropical Sim. I've never heard of any other good scenery for this part of the world. TS is not close to Orbx's quality, but it's not that bad either. Matheus Mafra

My friend lives in Tijuca, which isn't that close to the beach either but not to far, closer than you. Last time I was there I rented an apartment in Arpoador for a few weeks. It was a pretty good spot since I could take the metro and get anywhere I wanted to go pretty easily.BTW, you speak really good English for it not being your native language. Do they start teaching English in school at a very early age these days or did you learn from someone else outside of school? Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
