Comet on the way

Seems like Just Flight's shiny new de Havilland DH-106 Comet jetliner is nearly ready, boxed version's artwork looks very cool:http://www.justflight.com/newsDetail.asp?newsid=1977Screenshots: http://www.justflight.com/developProduct.asp?pid=526Looking forward to that, it was the first aeroplane type I ever flew on. 25 quid price tag is not bad either.Al

Thanks once more, for that Al. It was the very first jet aircraft I flew on, way back in 66 on the now defunct-UAA(United Arab Airlines)today's EgyptAir. As I value your assessments, look forward to what you have to opine about this when it gets released.

It looks akin to their Constellation and DC-3 as far as modeling goes, and they are nice FSX aeroplanes with most of the systems being pretty convincing and the handling being good, but I guess we'll see. Be interesting to know who they approached about determining the flight model, I know there are still plenty of pilots about who flew the Comet in airline service and of course there will certainly be many who flew the Nimrod right up until late last year, so potentially it could be an accurate flight model if they spoke to the right people. I do know that the Comet was actually very fast and powerful in real life; it even had the provision to have JATO rockets on it for hot and high operations, which is a novel concept for an airliner, although they were apparently not used on many occasions since it proved unnecessary. The texturing and colouring looks very similar to both the JF Connie and the JF DC-3. I know that method is not to everyone's taste though, often being regarded as 'cartoonish' owing to the fact that everything looks clean and brand new, which is kind of the opposite to what Captain Sim do, where many of their cockpits look like they've photographed something from an Arizona boneyard.Somewhere in between the two would actually be my preference, but I bought both their Connie and their DC-3 and the Captain Sim ones and they are all FS aeroplanes I like to fly, so it's all good. Glad to see they've stuck a Dan Air London Livery in there, those things used to come over my old house all the time on the way into Manchester, and riding one of those to Spain was my first ever flight in an airliner, so I've definitely got a soft spot for them. All the FMC nuts won't like it though, and will probably wonder why all us old gits are banging on about it being a classic LOL.Al

Nice write-up Al.That's why I value what you have to say. I too have the JF Connie and the JF DC-3 which Jane Whittaker gave good reviews in PC Pilot, and I value her write-ups,and as Flightstore had a sale on, they were too good to miss.I also have the Legendary 707 and their latest version for FSX and could not agree more on the Arizona boneyard comment.Talking of Dan-Air, whilst at BA I was offered a job by them to service their BAC-111s. If my memory serves me right, they in fact bought the UAA Comets.Good to know that we were the first to reach the mark in jet airliner aviation history.Nostalgia certainly evokes warm memories.

Yup, Jane is a friend and she's very knowledgeable on aeroplanes, having been a 737 pilot amongst other things, although she's kind of dropped off my radar; I sent her an email the other week asking her how she was, as I know she was quite seriously ill a while back, having to go into hospital, so I certainly do hope she is okay and simply missed that mail. I was angling for a job at PC Pilot actually, apparently she put the word in for me with the editor LOL!Al

Extraordinary! Finally something to shed the Dave Maltby and JBK Comets inside! Wonder if it contains G-ALYP...Dave.

Just pre-ordered it, which you can now do on the JF site. Doing that gets you five quid off the price, and I threw some of my JF loyalty points at it too, meaning it only cost me 17 quid. Winner.Link to the pre-order page if anyone wants to go for it: http://www.justflight.com/product.asp?pid=703Al

I also had my first jet flight on a Dan Air Comet from Manchester to Corfu in 1972. I was looking forward to the flight more than the holiday, and was surprised to find myself on one of the rear-facing seats in the cabin. The flight was memorable in that we had to do a go-around at Corfu, because the runway was occupied by another aircraft - impressive acceleration when facing backwards! On arrival in the terminal a passenger who had seen the incident remarked that the Comet 'went up again and lots of black smoke came out of the engines'.I'm looking forward to this release despite have just bought iFly's great 737NG for FSX.Mike

I recall being on a Dan Air London Comet once when it was in flight over the Pyrenees, I was in a seat next to one of the emergency hatches over the wing, and I noticed there was actually ice in the inside of the window up at the top of it, just as I noticed that, the emergency door shifted a bit in the door frame! I heard it make a 'clunk' noise and actually saw it move a bit. As you can imagine, I then very quickly fastened up my seat belt LOLAl

That period artwork is the best I've seen on any FS product. It reminds me of the Roy Cross paintings that used to adorn the boxes of Airfix kits..Ian

Yeah, I bought the download version, but I do hope they'll sling a jpeg of the box art in with it. I'd love that as my desktop wallpaper.I used to love the way those old Airfix box paintings always had a not-very-subtle dig at the Germans or Japanese, with any pics of Axis bombers invariably being depicted as missing the target with their bombs or with an engine on fire from a Spitfire on their tail LOLAl
