FSX with HyperThreading ON or OFF?

Featured Replies

In preparation for the NGX release I´m planing to overclock my I7 930 this weekend. I just received my new cooler and I think I´m ready for the next step. But then this question came to my mind. Will Hyperthreading help FSX performance? Certainly the temperature increase with HT will affect my overclock and what will be better: HT ON with a lower clock or HT OFF with a higher clock?Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks in advance guys and sorry for the English!

OFF. Definitely off.HT offers no advantage in FSX because FSX can't take advantage of the additional cores. If disabling HT lowers your temp enough to clock a bit higher then that's the way to go.EDIT: What I mean to say is that having HT on or off won't make any difference for FSX. Rereading my post, it might have implied that enabling HT was worse than disabling it. FSX won't care either way, but if temperatures are an issue then you might be able to clock a bit higher with it disabled...

Fernando,Perfect English. No need to apologise. There are various arguments for and against HT, but my vote goes for HT off with higher overclock. You've correctly identified HT generates more heat. Also, I believe FSX only uses physical cores.

HT off as the others said.

Best regards, Steffen

I've tested FSX with HT on and off. Makes no difference with my i7 920 o/c @ 4ghz. HT off lowered my voltages and temps by heaps. Also tested Crysis 2 with HT on and OFF and it made no difference :))I'm running along tho with a 580, that might be helping abit, maybe.Pete Walsh.

There are virtually no games that take advantage of HT - it's basically only useful for content creation apps - photo/audio/video editing, 3D modelling apps etc.

I think Vin mentioned something about being a paid consultant for the Institute of Hyper Threading for Better Gaming awhile back (I do not have a link).

Stupid question time: Why don't more games take advantage of HT? Is it because developers just aren't programming for it, or something else?

Ryan, i wonder then , the only diference between Quad Core OC at 3 like mine with a stock I7 with HT off is that the last one can be OC to 4?

So OFF it is!! Thanks guys! Lots of useful info! I'll try to reach 4ghz but slowly. I am thinking in start with 3.3 or 3.6 for the first week and see what is going to happen.
