MS Flight weather engine.

Howdy,I haven't seen anything about the weather engine. I'd really like to know if that's going to be addressed. Ever since FS2004 the ability to do IMC can be difficult. I prefer IMC myself. Has this been discussed already?

I personally don't think the MS team is going to put much effort into making a realistic weather engine. They probably are going to "patch" the current FSX engine and move on and ignore the complaints. You have to remember that they are marketing to a casual gamer, not hardcore flight-simmers like us. But, if they can provide well made tools in the SDK that would allow teams like Active Sky and REX to completely manage the weather system, then we might be in for some realistic IMC flying.Best Regards,

I'm not going to even try. Just read the FAQ section on the MS Flight website, and you will soon learn that its not aimed at just the casual gamer. So, please, read the FAQ.I think they will greatly improve on the weather engine, on many levels. But we pretty much know from a logical perspective that MS wont ignore the complaints of the FSX weather engine/ system. That is just silly, they will no doubt give us a much better experience this time round. I believe that the reason we are not seeing much improvement on the weather in the screen shots they gave us, is because maybe they don't want to show us something that is not complete, or something they cant offer (remember the DX9 and DX10 comparison/ artists impression that many people fell for). In the end we may even have volumetric clouds, who knows. But without factual information and sources that back up your view, we can only take it as your opinion, not fact. It could (and most likely will) be very different from what you stated, in fact I bet it'll be very different from a lot of peoples opinions on here. But it is okay to share your opinions, but they are still opinions. We simply do not have that much infomation at the moment, and until we get given it directly from Microsoft, we shouldn't make outlandish assumptions (this is just in general) to what MS Flight will or will not be.Jamie ♥

*btw, when using the term 'game' it is an umbrella term, it also includes simulation and racing games, and everything in-between. Do not twist my words.

"A video game is an electronic form of play that involves interaction with a user interface to generate visual feedback on a video device" - the definition of the word "videogame", game is the common shorthand for videogame. Just being clear.

Yep. What she said. Agree

If only we could get weather this beautiful in a flight simulator :

If only.Jamie ♥

how so?  You cant create IMC conditions easily with FSX

I don't think I understand this statement. Are you saying IMC conditions are possible? Or that you agree with me?As an example, flying into an airport doing an ILS procedure with minimums. Whenever I set the cloud base - and multiple at that - and multiple visibilities settings, I can still see the threshold even before I capture the GS. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong? Do you have a technique for setting weather that works? If you do I'd love to hear about it.Thanks,-Matt

It sounds to me like you’re doing it right. But like you mention, it’s the visibility layer that really counts when you're in the soup.

Sorry, I meant to say you can create IMC condiitions ...You are flying IMC if cloud ceilings below 1000ft AGL (above ground level), or a prevailing visibility of less then 3 statue miles (couple of examples, there are more) ... I was confident that I have set up both of these conditions before in FSX.   Going to have to do a flight to confirm

Based upon what the MS development team has done in the past, my expectations are set pretty low. You have to remember that FSX isn't much of an increase from FS9 except some texture upgrades, better clouds and nicer water. Best Regards,

From a developer's point of view, FSX was a huge step up from FS9. You may not realize it, but there's so much more you can do with FSX when developing add-ons. While FSX is a step up, performance issues and regular crashes are the biggest downside.

Just because it happened in 2000 and 2006, doesn't mean it will happen again. Microsoft is aiming at a wider audience...one that doesn't necessarily have a super computer. They pretty much have to give us a well performing sim if they want to get that bigger audience.

I hope your right. I am very concerned with this sim so far. I honestly don't care if Microsoft has already attempted to reassure us.
