Is there a truly superior water graphics addon for FSX yet?

Featured Replies

Checking to see if there is anything better than the default and REX2 for ocean and inland water. I'm currently using a couple of FEX water themes but they just look so hokey and unrealistic. River water sparkles so much it looks like sandblasted magnesium! Weird to me water is so weak looking in FSX. Anyway, if there's something with significantly different and better water I'd love to know where to look. Thanks in advance,Noel

I used REX with Orions FSWC settings at it looks pretty damn good to me.Then again, between all the REX or FEX water types and combinations of FSWC settings as well as ENB settings, I could see how it could take some time to find a combination that suites your taste. At the moment I like the Sparkling set of wave animations, combined with my own slightly tweaked water colors (Ocean, Inland and Shallow) that I did in the REX UI, Orions FSWC setting, and with my ENB bloom settings it all ties together pretty well.I think with all of that (REX/FEX, FSWC, and ENB) you can get it about as good as it can be given what FSX's engine is able to do.

Hello, I have no answer to the question. In fact I have an other question : Are the FSWC and the Bojote Shader 3 MOD modifications compatible? Thanks in advance

A lot of it is down to where you fly and when you fly, zip over the English Channel for real on a lovely summer day and you'd think it was the Caribbean you were looking at, pop over it in February and it looks like the North Sea on an angry day and you'd sure not want to take your chances belly landing on it. So for a 'one size fits all', I'm fairly happy with picking a reasonable average from what REX does, although I do always think the waves are somewhat over-large on most FS water. It'd be a hell of a stormy day if you could make out the waves from 38,000 feet in the way which FSX often depicts them!Al

Thanks, I did install FSWC and it's definitely an improvement, but still the water in FSX is really pretty poor when I compare it water in other 3D games. Just lacks a key quality of water: it doesn't look particularly wet! There are too many elements of how it behaves graphically that don't look very realistic to me, but alas I guess we can hope for something more natural from Flight, or X-Plane 10 if that is your fancy. Thanks again all, we'll keep it ;o)

Here's a link to customer screenshots of REX, and I suspect most folks are using FSWC as well. Flip through and you'll see some nice ocean water representations.http://realenvironmentxtreme.com/customer/customer.html

Well we can't fix an engine problem hehe... You're not going to get Crysis 2 water effects in 2005-era code. The preview shots for Flight looks a little better, but definitely not 3D waves like Crysis has.

I've tried them all. IMHO REX is the best.

Indeed, there are some quite nice ones there. Looks like I need to play a little more with what I already have. I do notice one issue though which may be why I made the comments in the first place: at one distance water can look quite good, but from a much different distance, it can also look quite unreal. In any case, I'll keep playing with it. Thanks Tim.

Such is the reason we provide so many choices Noel :)
