Frame Rates

Featured Replies

Can someone assist me with the reason for frames going from 30fps to 5fps in FSX whenever I run FTX (Orbx) scenery and ASE with the PMDG 747. The model is unflyable to say the least on my system.Windows XP (Home) with SP3.Flight Sim FSX with SP1 and 2.CPU intel ® Core 2 Duo CPU E8500 @ 3.16GHz (2 CPU's).HD 298GB with 120GB free.Ram 3070MB.Graphics Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 Memory 1024MB res 1280X1024 (32bits)(60Hz).PSU 620W Modular Power Supply.I did read one post from PMDG Management that any frame rate issues had been addressed with regards to the soon to be released 737NGX. The main question is will I need to purchase a NEW system with Windows7 and disregard any addons for FSX to handle the 737NGX smoothly? Such addon packages as ORBX (FTX) and Active Sky will be too much of a drain for this VERY advanced and complex 737NG model to run smoothly with acceptable frames.Has the tech team at PMDG test run the 737NGX with a basic system running Windows XP or has the entire build been with Windows7 on a very up market system with addon scenery (Orbx)and AES or alike weather systems?Regards,Delf(Heron 1B)

I really am not into the computer business really but I can tell you that the 737NGX runs better than the PMDG747, that has been confirmed by PMDG members.

Old CPU, low amount of RAM with a 32-bit OS and a 1GB vid card (which cuts into your available address space for FSX), and you're probably trying to run settings that are too high for it. We can't do magic here - the sim will slow down with almost any complex addon aircraft on old hardware if you're trying to throw the most dense scenery and weather that exists for the sim at it.

G'day Ryan,Appreciate your comments. I must admit I have had this system for some years now and it has been modified a few times. Can you advise what a suitable system should be in the way of specs and what OS would I require to run the 737NGX.I have FS9 and FSX installed at the moment as my home cockpit build is running with PMDG 737NG model in FS9. Hope to go over and make the FSX PMDG 737NGX the base model for the cockpit come release date. However I would like some details as to what system I should consider with regards to OS, CPU, Graphics, I have 4GB Ram at the moment but appreciate that is inexcess of what Windows XP can handle. Also been told duo core is all that is required for flight sim, quad core only useful if and when DX10 comes into play. Once again I have been told Windows XP can only run with DX9.Regards,Delf(Heron 1B)

Ryan (or someone else), can you explain how the 1GB video card is bad? I was under the impression that 1GB was a good number for FSX (as compared to say other games.)

I think he said is bad with the PC he have. And acually, FSX doesn't use as much of the Graphic Card as any other game. FSX is CPU intensive, so a 1GB card will be more effective for other games than FSX.

The OP is using a 32bit Windows, which can only address so much RAM. In other words, the OP's 1GB card is eating into some of the address space for system memory. My explanation is simplified so that I can understand it. :(

Ok, thanks, that makes sense. I knew FSX is a CPU limited game, so I was confused by that post.

Hi Delf,There has been quite a bit posted on here in the past by Ryan on what he recommends as far as systems are concerned, a quick search should give you some good results - if not basically its something along the following lines:System Specification- Case: Antec 1200 V3 Case with White LED case fans.- Power Supply: OCZ ZX 850 Gold Rated PSU- CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz Sandybridge overclocked to 4.60GHz- Motherboard: Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard- Cooler: Corsair H80 CPU Cooler- RAM: 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 Dual Channel Kit (16GB Upgrade Available)- Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB 6GB/s SATA-II 32MB Cache & SSD Options- Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card- Sound: Realtek 7.1 Channel Sound (On-Board)- Optical Drive: Samsung SH-B123L/RSBP 12x BD-ROM / 16x DVD Writer Drive - BlackThats just a copy and paste from a website of the system I am looking at purchasing, but to put it in a nutshell its a Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz Sandybridge overclocked to 4.60GHz with 8GB DDR3 RAM and a Nvidia GTX580 1536MB Graphics card. Thats about the best you can get at the moment at a fairly good price too. Well its not overly cheap - but not hugely expensive either.Hope that helps a bit.Cheers,

Hehe, expensive or cheap is only relative I suppose, I built a similar system (specs in sig, but also an SSD, which offsets the cost of a 580 vs 570) and it was a brand new build - new case, new monitor. $2000 USD! That was expensive to me.

@ AnticCould you post a link to this system so I can take a look there? Thanks!

Thats a very valid point - the one I am looking at actually probably works out to more than yours - but thats mainly due to my laziness and wanted it pre-built for me as apposed to doing it myself...so I guess thats the price I pay,Im also not married and no kids and in between girlfriends so I thought I may as well dive in while the coast is clear! LOL!

Sure thing Shane http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-174-OEAs you can see its a UK site so not sure if thats local to you, quite a lot of upgrade options on there - actually they've now added an upgrade to the SSD as well-which is good because I thought I would have to give them a ring in order to get it upgraded. I've used this site for all my bits in the past and have no complaints at all.Cheers,

@AnthonyThanks for the quick response. Yeah I live in the Netherlands but it's good to look at, I'll most likely just upgrade my computer now but it's a rather small one so I don't know if all I want fits in there, but we'll see. Thanks again and have a good day :)

I have that rig, and I can confirm that it is absolutely worth it. FSX runs like a dream, you get 40 FPS in new york, with everything maxed besides traffic and some water effects with the pmdg 747.The canarsie approach has never been so epic till now! ;)I have too add too - due to the massive power that cpu detains when it is overclocked at that speed, you can record with fraps without even loosing 1 fps - something that really amazed me.
