August 6, 201114 yr Just out of interest, i run windows vista premium 32bit...if i wanted to upgrade to windows 7 64 what else would i need to change in my computer for example motherboards etc etc?? cheers Wayne Depends on your hardware... MS provides a tool on their Win7 site that will evaluate your system for suitability - it's called the "Windows 7 Suitability Tool" and is a free download. DJ

I dont think you need to change any hardware at all, just make sure your drivers are up to date (afterwards, but Windows usually does this automatically) and ensure that you aren't running any software currently that would be incompatible with 64-bit versions of Windows. August 6, 201114 yr Just realised....my vista is 32bit and o the windows website it says you cannot upgrade from a 32bit to a 64bit so guess i need a new computer or not?...please give me some advice guys thanks wayne
August 6, 201114 yr Author To the OP - what applications are you worried about if you switch to 64-bit? There's very very few issues in my experience. Only extremely old 16-bit apps won't work and there's ways around that with virtual machines and stuff anyway. (XP mode, VM Ware etc) Thanks Ryan. I guess I need to find out with the W7/64 evaluation tool mentioned elsewhere in the thread (and apparently, re-install is needed). In response to Bruno: I have a fair few add ons installed. .../... The OOM error in this case is still in evidence and seems to appear regardless of how many add ons are in use at that time. Have them unloaded, have them loaded and the OOM error will at some point rear its ugly head. In my personal experience only as soon as I apply the fix the problem is gone. Thanks Steve. But I am not sure I understand what you mean by "as soon as I apply the fix the problem is gone". Doesn't the system crash when you get OOM errors? In summary, so far nobody except you has reported that they can run the NGX satisfactorily on a 32 bit system. Anyone else? Bruno
August 6, 201114 yr Honestly, FSX was the one and only reason I've moved from XP 32bit to Win7 64bit (on the same hardware). I had a major stutter issue in WinXP and Aerosoft sceneries (particularly with VFR Germany) which has disappeared in Win7 64bit. I still do have some minor performance issues but I think the time is coming for a major hardware update. Gregor GrzesiaczynskiEDDF, EPWR
August 7, 201114 yr So how much memory does fsx address with windows 7 64.I was under the assumption fsx is a 32 bit app. With the 3gb switch on XP I can fly all day over my Mega Scenery Earth and GEX_UTX scenery without OOM errors. My iracing rig started out with an OCed Q9550 4ghz with 8gb ram on Win 7 64bit but the extra 4gb ram was gaining me nothing with the 32bit app.So I took out the 4gb sticks of ram and clean installed XP and actually got better benchmarks than with Win 7 64bit.So that extra ram and Win 7 have been sitting on the shelf since.Every game and fsx addon has been golden for me on XP.Ive been flying around the Hawaiian Islands with my photoreal scenery and real weather now in the NGX with no OOM errors.I was getting BSODs earlier but turning off cpu throttling in my bios and turning up my cpu fan speed seems to have fixed that.As great as the NGX is Its just not worth it to me to go out and buy a 2600k new Mobo and ram just for one add on.Course if someone wants to donate those parts.......................................:}Chris S Chris Strobel KSNA
August 7, 201114 yr Thanks Ryan. I guess I need to find out with the W7/64 evaluation tool mentioned elsewhere in the thread (and apparently, re-install is needed). Thanks Steve. I know a lot of my friends are. But in life you find more people post problems and don`t bother posting when things are running right. Look at Post #21 as another example of the OOM errors being fixable. What I was saying was without the fix I get the OOM errors, with the fix they`re gone, I don`t get them so no crash any more. Its really quite simple, just try it-its a 5 minute job and its reversible. If it works it saves time, trouble and money swapping to 64 bit. If it doesn`t then theirs 5 minutes of your life you`ll never get back. It works for me and I`m happy. The only 64 bit version of Vista I have is an OEM and not on the machine I want to run. But I`m totally happy with a 32 bit OS. Or ignore the fact 32 bit is working for others and just go down the 64 bit route.
August 7, 201114 yr Author With the 3gb switch on XP I can fly all day over my Mega Scenery Earth and GEX_UTX scenery without OOM errors. Theirs a lot of people running 32 bit with no problems I`m sure. Thanks Chris and Steve, I am tempted to try to make thinks work with XP PRO and the 3 gb switch (in fact I have 6 GB DDR 3 installed). My graphic card is a geforce gtx 275 1792 M0 ddr3 though and I don't know if this will do. Would also love to hear what PMDG think of the various fixes (3 GP switch etc.) that seem to do the job for some 32 bit users. From Ryan's comment, one may get the impression that they are not interested in following this path. Anyway, thanks again and I will also continue monitoring the other 2 or 3 threads on the topic. In any case, I 'll probably wait a few more weeks before making a decision. Bruno
August 9, 201114 yr Things are looking up. After suffering OOM on every flight on my WInXP32 system, despite trying just about every tweak in the book, I installed WIn7/64 with a fresh copy of FSX Acceleration and have completed 3 flights up to 90 mins each without a problem. FPS is not great, eg 8 in complex airport addon, 15 in cruise, but operation is quite smooth and fault free. So far I only have added GEX and run with no weather. Now to try with UTX, REX, ASE and some VFR photoscenery. Current specs are, Win7/64, 4GB DDR2-5300 ram, GTX460, Hopefully I'm on the right track and will continue to migrate to a Win7/64 simulation environment. Gerard Marley
August 9, 201114 yr Been flying the NGX A LOT on Vista 32-bit with only 2gb RAM since Friday with no OOM's and without sacrificing much of the eye candy. Just have to be real careful on what you run while running FSX IMHO; I only have ASE and Air Hauler running, along with the external frame limiter. I open nothing else while actually flying. Been on 5 hour long flights, extreme weather, and moderately heavy airports, no real problems. That said, I did order a couple of 2GB sticks of RAM to replace the 2 1GB sticks I have; will be trying out the 3gb switch once 4GB have been installed. (2006 era Dell XPS M1710 laptop). Scott Burns
