August 24, 201114 yr I cannot climb with the V/S, when I select it and press the autopilot A CMD, it is not working... It won't pull up the nose of aircraft to reach the selected altitude (e.g. 7000ft). Sometimes it pulls up too the nose, but I won't maintain the altitude at the selected alt... The VNAV is working perfectly, and the LEVEL CHANGE is working fully as well. But CLIMBING WITH V/S ..... unfortunately it is not working. Any idea?? Fixes for this?? Thank you!
August 24, 201114 yr Commercial Member Climbing with V/S is generally against real-life airline SOPs because it doesn't protect airspeed - need a lot more details on the exact situation to know what's going on, but there's a good chance something's not configured correctly. Post a screenshot of what the panel looks like while you're trying to do this. Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com

August 24, 201114 yr Commercial Member There's no reason it shouldn't work as long as you understand what that mode actually does - that's why I want to see a screenshot so I can tell if there's something wrong with how you're using it. August 24, 201114 yr ... just I shouldn't use V/S for climbing? When you are cleared to climb to an altitude, you are cleared, and that altitude and your speed are your only ATC restrictions, unless otherwise instructed. Why should you limit the climb rate that your N1 limit /speed can grant you for setting a climb rate higher or lower than needed? What will define your climb rate will be your speed. The only case I have seen a vertical speed climb being used was on a departure at which the captain wanted to see the beautiful marina below us at dusk. For 3 minutes or so, he set vertical speed to about 300fps (so that ATC didn't think we had leveled off) and once we had left the coast behind, he went back to VNAV. For descents, V/S is much more common. Sometimes v/s is used for steady descents, and some other times it's used for passenger confort to make the transition from level flight to open descents much smoother. Omar Josef 737/757/767

August 24, 201114 yr Author PMDG! Here are the screenshots: Here I am taking off: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/827/ngx1.png/I've just taken off. I enabled the A/T and the speed and the flight director: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/69/ngx2.png/Here you can see I activated the V/S: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/828/ngx3a.png/Here it is same (zoomed out): http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/832/ngx3b.png/Now I selected the CMD A autopilot: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/812/ngx4a.png/Here it is again, zoomed out for easier to see: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/835/ngx4b.png/ Please help me, I hope I could give you enough information by the photos to find that I did wrong.
August 24, 201114 yr Did you know that flight level change should be used for the takeoff phase, not vertical speed. Martin Wilby
August 24, 201114 yr You don't have the A/P CMD engaged. I am not 100% sure as I don't use v/s mode but I am guessing that this mode will not work unless the A/P is switched on. Mark. Mark CYYZ
August 24, 201114 yr Engage the A/P first and then activate V/S, or if you already engaged V/S before (as you did) you have to reengage it after engaging the autopilot. Not sure, but better to engage the second FD (the one on the copilots side) too. Regards Ralf
August 24, 201114 yr I can't make out what the error message shown on the last pic is, but the A/P error light. Paul Smith.
August 24, 201114 yr Okay - lot's of stuff going on here. First, you need to go back and run some checklists and do some reading. You got the sim "airborn" but not much looks like its set correctly. You need to have the F/Ds on to use the autopilot per Boeing. Yes you can use V/S for climbs, but after the T/O is complete. I've used V/S on departures many times. LVL CHG at low altitudes is not smooth if you're only changing 1-2,000 feet. Also if you've got a low-level level-off, it'll smooth out the climb. And if you're leveling for crossing traffic, you can avoid a TCAS if you decrease your closure rate with V/S. You need to have both F/Ds on to get the guidance cue (with a couple exceptions). Have fun! Matt Cee
August 24, 201114 yr Author Thanks everybody's help! If I engage the ALT HOLD, and If I engage the V/S AFTER THAT climbing with V/S is working.Another thing: after I took off, sometimes I can engage the A/P, sometimes I cannot... Why? It depends of the altitude..? please help.
