September 4, 201114 yr I know this question has been asked a million times, but I want to get a new set of opinions. What is the best traffic program? I tried out world of Ai, but that for whatever reason gave me a performance hit. I've heard ProjectAI is good, should I go with that? Thanks,boeing247 -Bram Osterhout
September 5, 201114 yr My vote is for Ultimate Traffic 2....love the activity it presents. Scott Burns
September 5, 201114 yr Author I've been considering that--it looks great. It is built for FSX originally, right? The problem I had with WoAI was the FS9 .bgl files were affecting my performance. Do you know anything about PAI? -Bram Osterhout
September 5, 201114 yr I've been considering that--it looks great. It is built for FSX originally, right? The problem I had with WoAI was the FS9 .bgl files were affecting my performance. Do you know anything about PAI? Yep, it was built from the ground up for FSX and has a great support forum. It's very configurable outside of FSX and has enough control within FSX when you need it (clearing your approach of AI, clearing AI so you can have a parking spot, lol, increase/decrease AI presence). September 5, 201114 yr I assume the models are pretty low-poly? To quote Flight1's site, from the Avsim review, "The models take advantage of DX10 and as such, being designed with the FSX SDK they eclipse FS9 ported AI." I've never had a beef with the models they use and actually think they look quite good when compared to some of the other AI applications I've seen reviews on. Scott Burns
September 5, 201114 yr Author Actually, I want low-poly--a lot easier on the frame rates. -Bram Osterhout
September 5, 201114 yr I'm not a fan of UT2. The models look good, but the number of airlines is rather limited. You can install your own, but I gotta ask what the point of that is. Isn't a AI traffic program made to supply you with lots of AI? if you have to start importing your own ones to finally complete the base installation, then I just don't see the point, really... I use MyTrafficX. The models don't look that good, to the point where I think the 757 for example just looks wrong. On the bright side, the amount of traffic is enormous. Just about every airline, no matter how small for as far as I can see, is in there. I'd gladly sacrifice the good models of UT2 for the rather poor by comparison models of MTX, just to get that enormous wealth of airlines. You also get air forces and cargo airlines, mind you. UT2 lacks a lot of cargo airlines... Be aware though that the schedules of MTX are fairly out of date. For example, Alaska Airlines has not been operating into Dutch Harbor itself, instead letting Pen Air do all the work. Nor does Alaska Airlines still use the Boeing 737-200, by my knowledge. So, imagine my surprise when Dutch harbor in my FSX was filled with Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-200 aircraft! So, do expect not to get full realism. This is also the selling point of UT2, mind you: you get up-to-date schedules. September 5, 201114 yr A little warning on the up-to-date part of UT2 that I didn't realize: when you purchase UT2 you do not get the current schedule but one that is a few years old. You have to pay extra for the current one. I definitely knock off some points for this. Many if not nearly all programs that have paid-for subscription data will give you the current set on first purchase and then you can pay for future sets as they are released. So if you want a recent schedule add another $7 to the purchase price.
September 5, 201114 yr Honestly, unless your just overly anal about up to date schedules, get the Spring or Winter 2010 schedule and leave it. Not the latest Summer 2011. The problem is that in the latest schedule they got rid of several major airlines (including Ryanair for you Euro fliers).

The problem is that in the latest schedule they got rid of several major airlines (including Ryanair for you Euro fliers). See, that's exactly my point. What's the use of UT2 if it doesn't include some truly major airlines. Just seems so pointless to me. If you anyway have to start importing AI from, let's say, WoAI, why not just use WoAI and be done with it. For as fara s I could see it's anyway the same models... September 5, 201114 yr The main thing that keeps me using UT2, despite it's flaws, are the good framerates and the night textures (lit up windows/logos on planes) that really add a lot when flying in the evening.WOAI results in completely dark planes sitting around everywhere. It's actually not that unrealistic if you've ever flown at night in real life, but without global lighting on the tarmac having some lighting on the planes themselves at least helps.
September 5, 201114 yr Author I don't think anybody's mentioned TrafficX. Is that any good? -Bram Osterhout
September 5, 201114 yr Moderator I know this question has been asked a million times, but I want to get a new set of opinions. What is the best traffic program? Here, you'll probably get the same opinions as usual Like you, when FSX first launched there wasn't a whole lot to choose from so I used WOAI until UT2 came out. I like UT2 simply for the fact that it's not .bgl based and the a/c fly actual routes, rather than just from point A to point B. I also like the ability to adjust the traffic setting from 0% to 100% on the fly without having to access a menu and also the 2 hotkeys that let you zap traffic to zero if your getting hammered on approach then hit the same key to have it reappear once your one the ground. It also has a "clear approach" hotkey than comes in handy if your either about to get run over or run over another plane while your on approach, you can strike that key and zap the traffic in your way. Frankly, there really is no BEST AI program. Features and benefits that I find in UT2 you might not like and would prefer to go with a .bgl based traffic program. I used UT2, plus some WOAI and some custom made AI that neither UT2 or WOAI have. I've even changed some of my WOAI traffic to use the UT2 models to gain a little performance. September 5, 201114 yr I'll vote for UTII as well. I love the ability to tinker with repaints and flightplans. With a bit of time you can do just about anything from restoring airports like old hong kong, to adding all the missing flightplans and repaints you would ever need.
