December 1, 201114 yr I don't know what the tone of the post is... You just seemed a little too eager to dismiss certain opinions with an unfair generalization, that's all.
December 1, 201114 yr I don't know what the tone of the post is, other than my thinking that people become attached to a computer game probably more than they should? I first noticed it when I saw a posting from a fellow about the AI parking at an airport. He was quite upset about a 737 parking at a spot. Not that it wasn't meant for a 737, but that it had the wrong engines for that particular spot.I still see postings about how one version of a game is superior to a later version, despite the obvious differences that dispel the notion. If the obvious can't sway opinions, what prompts the denial?Regarding my opinion of X-Plane, I have none other than I'm waiting to see how v10 matures. I bought v9.20 and installed it. Was put off by the UI and the squirrley flight characteristics of the Cessna and removed it from my HD to reclaim the disk space.I value my HD space. I use it to make payware add-ons for FSX. Nine HDs right now, with another couple showing up tomorrow via UPS. While I labor away at my latest project for FSX and wonder if it will be worthwhile or not, I am not threatened by X-Plane's release. It might turn out better than FSX? It might be better than Flight? I'll be looking for the one game that best suits my desires. If I can develop add-ons for that game, great! But I am still of the opinion that a lot of the people who use FS9 or FSX or X-Plane have a strong attachment to it. And anything that might threaten that attachment is prone to attack.Well I guess if you're making payware addons, it's time for you to join the Gold member club!!! December 2, 201114 yr Strangely, that plug-in kills my frame rates. I have XP10 tuned to give me a pretty steady 15FPS, but with that plug-in, it drops to single digits. I have to delete the plug-in and restart my computer to get things working smoothly again. This is on a 64-bit Linux system.Just to let folks know, this is actually a bug in XP10 introduced in the last update (10.02b2) and apparently has nothing to do with the plug-in. Confirmed when I sent a bug report to Laminar and was informed that they're already working on a fix.
December 2, 201114 yr Exact Exactly, and don't forget you do not require allegiance to only one sim. I like a lot of them so it's frustrating to come to this group and keep hearing about FSX users of which I am one of. XP is really the smaller fish in this space, whether you like to think it or not, whether it deserves that position or not the truth is FSX has greater share and more people playing it. What you can do when you are the smaller player is be the gentleman about it. All I have seen in the last few days of being here is XP'er complain about all the talk they get dished so they have to dish it back. The reality is that this is all I have seen because I have not seen it going the other way. Sorry Geoff to hijack your thread but it's starting to peeve me that anytime someone says something good there seems to be cried of vindication against FSX, lets up the quality of the posts. You guys seem to be knowledgeable and very helpful. Let that be the message in this group.Good God, I have never seen someone put so much effort into justifying their sniffling. Man, its a damn game. Grow up.
December 3, 201114 yr Yes I agree I should have read the manual to discover these things but how many do? you wrote In other words you spoiled your own experience by not reading the manual first. OK I must be fair , I did not read the manual first either , the first time I bought XP (nr9). As a logical result of that it took me a bit more time to get things running. Did that spoil my experience absolutely not. I agree it would be very handy having default joystick-setting for the average simmer to start with. Then you can take the bird for a spin right away. Another problem arrives the same moment , the default plane is a Jumbo. With a realistic sim like X-Plane its tricky to start with such a big bird. We do not want to read the manual first to see how to load an GA. So we need the Cessna as our startup-plane. Being airborne we want to look left and right and that must be pre programmed for our stick as well. And so on. On the other hand ,having all features of our wishlist above, people might get the impression X-Plane is a simple arcade-game,decide to buy the full-package and get disappointed afterwards by being confronted with a sim wich is to complex for them to handle. Its better to know the complexety of the product before buying it. The best way to get that knowledge is.......reading the manual first.Or taking the effort to find out the empirical way.Personally I think its OK the way it is.Leen
December 3, 201114 yr People feel threatened any time something "new" comes along. It interferes with their financial and emotional attachment to a game. They will attempt to discredit the "new" and anyone who supports it. Saw it when FSX came out, will see it again when Flight comes out. To see people attack X-Plane now, whereas they would have never given X-Plane any thought before, is because they are threatened by it and it's chance of success. The possibility of it being "better" than what they have become emotionally attached to.There are plenty of MS FS'ers who will look for better and not feel threatened, by either X-Plane or Flight. Progress is good, so is competition. For all parties involved!+1One of the best posts and accurate observations I've seen on AVSIM in a long time.@ JasonHarris............ You come across as exactly the person he was describing above. Stop being so emotive about the subject! December 3, 201114 yr +1One of the best posts and accurate observations I've seen on AVSIM in a long time.@ JasonHarris............ You come across as exactly the person he was describing above. Stop being so emotive about the subject! I seem the remember I was on my second or third gin and tonic so there was probably some emotion there lol. I should have probably paid more attention to his second paragraph because if there is a group described in the first paragraph it doesn't count me as one of them. I had probably come to this group at the wrong time, on the release of a new product where there was a bit of back for forwards going on from both camps and as an fsx user I seemed to get lumped in with the first paragraph whenever a criticism was raised. It seems to annoy me hearing stuff like that all the time and then when an fsx user says something good I would see a reply like 'you've finally opened your eyes'. Please, it is a bit insulting and has seemed negative to fsx users trying to give this a go.
