Still can't decide which GTX580 to buy, advise needed!

Featured Replies

Hi,I'm gonna buy a new graphics card very shortly, probably within the next 1-2 weeks. It's gonna be a GTX 580 1.5 GB, no matter what. But I can't decide which one to buy. First of all, here in the Netherlands, quite a lot of them are out of stock already. At the moment the Gigabyte GV-N580UD-15i has caught my eye, and looks like a really good one. But also the EVGA GTX 580 DS Superclocked, and MSI GTX 580 Twin Frozr II (Lightning version out of stock), look really good. So is there really a difference between those cards? In the end it's all the same chip from NVIDIA, but still. Is anyone having Out Of Memory (OOM) issues with the GTX 580 1.5GB? Some advise would be really welcome! Thanks!

Hi,I you haven't done it yet, visit the Bojote's tweaking tool page at http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.htmlWhen done, you should edit your FSX.CFG file, and look for a line similar to this (except the graphic card name):[DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti.0]Below it, you must add this line (for a 1.5 GB graphic card):VideoMemoryOverride=1610612736Hope this helps. Sorry for my poor english.Merry Christmas!

Yeah, I know, I already have a tweaked FSX.cfg. But do you have any recommendations for a GTX580? Do you like your Gigabyte GTX560TI? And about the FSX.cfg setting, this will limit the VRAM to how much exactly?

Arjen Vandervelde

Arjen if you can hold off a couple weeks just wait. If you gotta have a GTX580 you will be able to get a Steep discount once the GTX 600s come out and heck you might even want one of those as they are going to be much better than the 500 series. There is even rumor that Nvidia will be skipping the 600 series and going straight to the 700 series to counter AMD. Supposedly the 780 series will have 2 times the power of the 580. So you can get a 580 now or be patient and have the best in a couple weeks.

Yes, I'm very happy with my Gigabyte GTX 560 TI, but it would be better to get a GTX 580!! LOL.gifThis setting informs FSX the amount of memory available for graphics. Probably it will solve your OOM problem. Try it and, please, tell me the result.

I didn't know about this, so it's a great advice!

I didn't say I have an OOM issue, I was just wondering if a GTX 580 can CAUSE OOMs, so can it cause OOMs, even when it's 1.5 GB? And Paul, the 600 Series will not be released in a couple of weeks, at least, not in Holland. And there's always something new coming out in the hardware world, so I can always keep waiting for a pricedrop. I'm not gonna do that.

I never had anything with the NGX and my GTX 580 1.5GB. (Evga)Then I only have had this set-up since august this year./ Leffe

I have a GTX580 1.5GB and no OOM errors. As for which card, doesn't really matter. The core components are all the same. Main differences come down to different coloured PCB, fan and cooler type and accessories that it comes with. eVGA have always been a solid brand.

Are you sure about the 700 series? And a couple of weeks, is that comfirmed yet? Will it be in January, February...?? I think I'm not gonna have enough money for a GTX 780 though, I estimate that's gonna cost around 600 euros. And you're right, I should at least wait until the 700 series come out. How big do you estimate the pricedrops will be? Currently, an EVGA GTX 580 DS Superclocked costs around 450 euros, so how much lower will that be? 400? 350? 300?

Wow I haven't checked out computer hardware in a while and I just saw the clock rate for the memory on the 580! 4 Ghz! What! How do they keep the power usage down on those things. It's amazing how fast this technology moves!

Hi Gerard,I have a GTX 570 with 1Gb VRAM, do I still use the same line (quoted below)?

Below it, you must add this line (for a 1.5 GB graphic card):VideoMemoryOverride=1610612736
Thanx for the help, mate,Frank Cooper
