RC Compatibility - Potential New User

Featured Replies

Hi,I'm quite interested in purchasing RC but concerned about compatibility with my current add-ons (see my sig). Any advice on this is much appreciated. I am interested in RC as a possible lead-in to VATSIM in the longer term. I will be flying the NGX naturally.

No problems with anything there that I can see. You might (repeat might) have to make some different keyboard command selections if any conflict. A carefuyl review of your control command structure might be in order after you install RC-4. Read the manual too.

... and I can vouch for Radar Contact as an excellent intro to VATSIM!Been there, done that and still at it.

I don't know what the 'Blue' series is.After installing RC you need to update FSUIPC and makerwys.exe from the forum links at the head. For Win 7 you will need to obtain and then use a Win 7 registration procedure to replace some runtime libraries (.ocx, .dll files listed in this thread http://forum.avsim.net/topic/265834-713-and-unregistered-dlls/ no longer included in Win 7 that were in previous Win versions). In Win 7 you will need to insure RC is not interfered with in built-in and add-on security systems. In Win 7 you will need to initially start RC by right clicking on it and selecting run as admin. After you run it and have it registered you can set up a shortcut to it and set the shortcut properties to run as admin. Once makerws.exe is updated you will need to rebuild the scenery database once more which will take care of some priority problems. UK2000 scenery, among others, will then be correctly listed in RC's database.Traffic X ai should work just fine with RC. In RC just have Interact with a AI selected and AI chatter selected. Avoid the random Prerecorded Chatter option and also have Display Text off as that slows performance of RC.That should get you going.

Thanks guys for that, I'll get onto it when I get some time. Got some holidays coming up so probably when I get back.

One addition. The RC co-pilot can only fly aircraft programmed to use the standard FS autopilot interface. Certain models not using the FS standard interfacing (SDK) such as PMDG products can not be flown by the RC co-pilot. The co-pilot can still perform most communications for you.

That's ok, don't need a co-pilot, sounds way too advanced for me! The FTX Blue series are basically just parts of Australia and North America. I'll probably collect them all eventually.

This may have already been said, but all Orbx sceneries work perfectly welll with RC. just run makerways etc as noted. I'm a devoted FTX flier.

They sure do some nice stuff but they don't like McAfee much, that's for sure! Of course I could change to something else but I use it on the kid's machines and have all the parental controls set-up. I've been with McAfee for years actually but one problem is that I can't seem to disable real time scanning selectively for FSX (installed in the default location). I'm going to change all this when I build a new box and put FSX on an SSD. I'll do some research on AV meantime.

I have a simviation buddy who gave up on McAfee some years ago. due to it kiling various flight sim files without warning. He went to Norton with great sucdess. Some swear at Norton AV. I swear by it.

My 2 cents - McAfee and Norton (sorry but Norton is worst) are huge resource killers. I would recommend using an Antivirus that does not eat up your systems power.ESET seems very friendly to keep things running well. AVG is good but their pro edition is also a resource hog.Ehh take it or leave it. Just wanted to let you know because we started discussing this on the orbx forums too.

I'll have a look at the orbx forums but might also contact McAfee regarding the DayNight exe file issue with FTX NZSI. What I really need is something better suited for FSX that also provides the parental controls I'm looking for. Or maybe ditch McAfee, find something designed for kids and something else for me. McAfee is quite expensive too.

I believe ESET does have some parental controls. Check out their site.I warn you good ol McAfee will not like being uninstalled. Here are the links to the little conversation we had this morning on Orbx and the ESET page you are looking for:http://www.orbxsystems.com/forum/topic/41333-mcafee-detects-trojans-during-installation-of-nzsi/andhttp://www.eset.com/us/home/products/smart-security/Parental Controls restrict access to websites by specific category or individual URL.Hope this helps. :Thinking:BTW You need to register (I believe) to view the orbx forums.

Indeed, I've had to remove McAfee a few times on XP platforms. They have a removal tool that can be downloaded but I'd still be wary of what's left behind! Probably wait till I build a new platform or have to rebuild for whatever reason. I'll have a read up on your links. I'm going to disable McAfee just to see if I get any noticeable improvement in FSX.

I agree with you Dan, the latest Nortons, from about 2008 on are very light on resource and are easy to configure, such as excluding the FS directory from scans. My son-in-law with three others runs an IT software & website design business. All four of them have trialled all the main AV software, freeware and payware and have all come to the conclusion that the latest Nortons are one of the best. I've had a couple of instances where I've needed their support. All I can say is that it is first class!Iain Smith
