No, they can't - http://www.bbc.co.uk...nology-15572495, and http://en.wikipedia....P_site_blocking report just how futile and simple circumvention is.
There will always be a locksmith's daughter- the village boys will always find a way to unlock the chastity belt- but laws can be refined as time goes on and I suppose that's what is happening with the anti-piracy legislation.I have no internet at home and use my local library or my employer's connection. They both have very stringent security policies so until today I hadn't bothered to find out what torrent sites actually do. I suspect that type of website was the main target of this legislation in its reference to sites linking to pirated content. As long as legitimate and legal links aren't compromised I'll be happy. It's unfortunate though that there are criminals within the law who will always be looking for loopholes, and for new ways of restricting the population's freedom for no reason other than their own gratification. Thanks all for an interesting thread.D

".. I hadn't bothered to find out what torrent sites actually do. I suspect that type of website was the main target of this legislation in its reference to sites linking to pirated content."Megaupload is currently nixed, and isn't a torrent site, but a file-storage/exchange site. That sort of website actually has entirely legitimate uses when email will only handle attachments of a few megabytes.http://www.megaupload.com/

Not that I wouldn't put it past US Federal legislators to attempt to extend their law extraterritorially, as I think they have done in certain cases.
Seem's the closure of Megaupload is self explaining !To note that Piratebay torrents site is in full activity despite the closure attempt and trial some time ago !So far ... the fight again piracy by governments or majors is a failure ....

I see this as merely losing the Battle. The war is ongoing, SOPA will be reworked into another incarnation.I think even the supporters of SOPA knew it wouldn't pass, they put it up there for shock value. The only real effect on online piracy IMO is blocking access to it, SOPA may have been draconian, but it is definitely in the right direction. Expecting all foreign nations to assist in protecting copyrights just doesn't work.Regards.Ernie.

How you block this ?http://freenetproject.orgBlocking attempts will always result by a failureYou can't stop the phenomena .. you can only have to adapt to the futureCreators and industries referring must be creative ... rejection will not solve anythingKodak case is a good example ... you adapt or you die ...

It always seems that way, untill it becomes really popular with the masses, and that'susually when it begins its downfall. And that's the whole point. You can't eliminate piracy, you can however make a significant dent in it, by requiring a higher level of sophistication than the average person hasto get to it.The problem with online piracy now, is its just too easy, any idiot can do it. Do a google searchclick on the website link, download the torrent file and your halfway there.Block the most popular websites (which affects their revenue stream from advertising), exclude it from some of the more the popular search engine results, all of a sudden, piracy is not soeasy for the average person anymore.Regards.Ernie.

Obama won't sign the bill. I guess there is one thing he did good in 4 years.http://www.forbes.co...cy-legislation/

Your head must be in a different world. You do realize that the fight for Bin Laden started awhile ago and was emphasized by the Bombing of the USS Cole and then the 9/11 attacks for us. The only thing Obama did was continued the search and surveillance of Bin Laden. How did Obama create lasting jobs? He created government stimulus for little projects those are not lasting jobs.

Anything he might have done (and I don't accept their made-up jobs number) was on mountains of borrowed money that our kids are going to have to repay--with interest. A 50% increase in the national debt in just three years of frauds and handouts. Insanity. If I was allowed to spend 40% more than I make year after year after year, I'd bet I could do some really cool things. Well at least until the bill collectors started calling...

Exactly. It must be fun to be insane enough to generate that much debt and then get to leave your post with no detriment to your own life.

Lol, I know my history quite well thank you. "You do realize" that the financial situation we are in right now is a result of Dubya's failed economic policies? Obama has for the most part ended the two wars Bush began and spent trillions on and more importantly, has brought our troops home and out of harm's way.

Where did the thread go?? :(

No way, several of the key Govermnent policies that contributed to the subprime crisis pre-date the Bush Administration.Carter, Reagan, Clinton, and Bush all had a hand in it.Carter - 1977 Community Reinvestment act (halted banks practice of lending discrimination, encouraged lending to uncreditworthy consumers)Reagan - 1986 tax Reform Act Mortgate tax exeption encouraged people to take out 2nd mortgages to pay off credit card debt.Clinton - 1999 Repeal of Glass-Stengal (act which separated commercial banks and investment banks)Clinton - 2000 Commodity Futures Modernization Act (exempted derivatives (ex Credit Default Swaps) from regulation and oversight))Bush/Clinton - Both had policies designed to expand home ownership, amongst low income families, and first time home buyers.Regards.Ernie.

Read up on the history of both the Glass-Steagall Act and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. You'll find that the safety mechanisms put into place during the Great Depression--regulations that would have prevented the 2008 economic meltdown--were repealed by law enacted during the Clinton administration, not by G. W. Bush. GLB was supported by then-Sec of the Treasury Lawrence Summers (you may remember him showing up later as head of Obama's national economic policy team) Sure, there's lots of blame to go around. Bush's administration got us started down bailout lane and I will never forgive him for that...but Obama followed Bush's sorry act with a so-far endless stream of even larger and more egregious transgressions.Last I looked, we are still heavily engaged in Afghanistan. Obama has not ended that war, which I will add was begun not by G. W. Bush, but by Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban that took him in after the attacks of 9/11/2001.Now, back to topic, your guy Obama ran his mouth quite loudly on the horrors of the Patriot Act before he occupied the Oval Office, and then later signed into law an extension of that very law to preserve that "excessive" (his words) power to be wielded by *his* administration. So no, I don't support putting the overreaching power codified into SIPA/PIPA in the name of antipiracy into the hands of The Chosen One and bought-and-paid-for lackeys like AG Holder. Nor do I support putting that kind of power into the hands of any of the candidates likely to unseat him in Nov.

You can't pin everything on one previous leader. These things tend to all snowball together unless they are repealed. I'm just saying Obama hasn't been helping to melt this snowball at all. He is also trying to ruin my job for me so to me he is the scum of the earth.
