How complete is XPX

Featured Replies

I just noticed that X-Plane 10 Global Edition has been released. I saw some videos and was very impressed with the night lighting and the road traffic. There are also some impressive looking shots. Can users share how complete this platform is:Can I fly VFR around beautiful landscapes like ORBX or similar? Can I practice VOR, ILS, & GPS approaches with dynamic weather? Can I fly a complex airliner from one great airport (FSDT/GSX Type) to the next airport? Is there dynamic ATC available? Can I use a yoke, pedals, and my go flight modules? Finally, how is the performance?I just want to get an idea of how complete XPX is now. It took FSX 6 years. I hope I don't have to wait another 6 for another complete platform. Also if you can share what you feel keeps you enjoying XPX. I'm really looking to buy XPX and just want opinions.Thanks.

Try the demo first and see if it fulfils some of your needs.Keep in mind, you are asking about default x plane against FSX payware (OrbX, FSDT, complex airliners,etc...)You'll need to lower your expectations for a default, out of the box product.

I agree with GoranM.Ill also add, that I only got XPX less than 2 weeks ago,(coming from a fully loaded FSX) and now im buying addons for Xplane like crazy because Im hooked on it. Its not perfect, but in a lot of ways I like it better than FSX. You just have to take your time to get to know the commands and interface, which is way different than FSX. Also dont judge Xplane by the default planes. The payware planes are way better. Take your time configuring it for your system. Set everything low and work up from there. Xplane doesnt work the same way as fsx. It takes some experimenting to find a nice ballance.Rob

XP10 has great potential but is still in an early beta with many drawbacks: At this moment there are still no buildings on most airports, no seasonal textures, the buildings, houses and structures are the same all over the world, clouds are more processor demanding than FSX even with my GTX 570 card, no Garmin GPS, there is not much AI Traffic in the air unless you let drop your framerate, etc .....I still don't have the feeling in XP10 to be in a 'real, living, plausible world', like i have with my expanded FSX.I am sure it will become better in future updates but it can take some time before it ever becomes as complete as FSX with addons like FEX or REX, GEX, UTX and an extra weather program like the excellent and freeware FSrealWX program. After all X-Plane 9 took also 4 years before it became XP 9.7 and still with no generic airport scenery.Of course things can change if more third party payware becomes available. So the announcement of PMDG to start developping for X-Plane looks promising for simmers who like the big irons. Some call a realistic looking world 'eye candy'. I suppose those people fly only in night conditions or perhaps blindfolded.Theoreticly and on paper XPX looks very impressive and the flight dynamics should be better than FSX, but in my humble opinion FSX flight dynamics are in general still a bit more realistic at this moment than XP 10.04 : groundhandling problems with wind, still exagerated yaw from props (to much left rudder in level flights, ...), luckily the flight dynamics in one of the the latest betas in wind and turbulence are more realistic, a roller coaster was fun but not realistic flying!

If a picture is worth a thousand words:Can I fly VFR around beautiful landscapes like ORBX or similar?NNW of KPDX on approach....default terrain...although comparing default to high quality payware for FSX is unrealistic:Can I practice VOR, ILS, & GPS approaches with dynamic weather?Established ILS final KPAE. At the moment an add-on GPS is required for GPS-activated approaches...but RNAV, VOR, NDB, and ILS are all supported in native XP.Can I fly a complex airliner from one great airport (FSDT/GSX Type) to the next airport?Starting at KLAXThe front officeOn the ground KSEAIs there dynamic ATC available?OK....you got me there. XP does feature dynamic ATC....but what is more dynamic than VATSIM :( . If you don't enjoy online flight you will have to decide for yourself regarding AI ATC. I have never used it in X-Plane and I don't use the AI traffic either. Can I use a yoke, pedals, and my go flight modules?Yes....I would have to check on the go flight module bit. I don't have those. Finally, how is the performance? Here is the kicker. Once you understand how X-Plane works and get it setup with realistic performance expectations to your liking say goodbye to stutters, pops, pauses, blurs, and other things you may have encountered elsewhere. No tweaking or tuning required. Set it and forget it.I just want to get an idea of how complete XPX is now. It took FSX 6 years. I hope I don't have to wait another 6 for another complete platform. Also if you can share what you feel keeps you enjoying XPX. I'm really looking to buy XPX and just want opinions. Now I have been a bit naughty here. ALL of the screens above are from X-Plane v9.7 which should be considered mature and pretty complete from a sim perspective. Similar to XPX I have added tons of freeware and payware airfield scenery to enhance my flight experience. XPX thus far in default form looks even better. Now your question is hardly fair either. XPX is only a couple months out of the oven and asking for a "complete" platform at this stage is hardly fair. The POTENTIAL is huge and as it matures I have no doubt it will be an outstanding simulator platform if you go into it with an open mind and refrain from expecting FSX-payware levels right out of the box (although KSEA default looks pretty darn nice actually....and the default 747 is pretty too).I enjoy the heck out of X-Plane....but nothing stops me from enjoying certain aspects of FSX as well.Try the demo....follow the guidance posted here and at the .org site for how best to set it up...and see what you think.Just be REALISTIC in expectations :Peace:I hope this helps!**Another edit**I forgot to mention that unless you have something like the CRJ-200 with a custom Navigraph-supported FMS (or the plug-in generic FMS module) or couple X-Plane to Flight SIm Commander (via XPUIPC) you will need to input the SID/STAR waypoints manually. Takes a little extra time...but once complete you save it and job done for the next time you run that route. Same goes for RNAV approaches...but be cautious as some airfields have better coverage than others when it comes to approach waypoints.

Thank you Ted and everyone else for their responses.I'm not going to give the demo a try. I want to buy the global edition. If anyone else wants to share why they are enjoying XPX, I will appreciate your feedback.

Uhm... So you're going to spend eighty bucks without trying the free and completely functional demo that allows you to evaluate _all_ the features of the full product (except for the world-wide scenery)? I don't get it... :(

I said I want to, not that I'm going to. I would appreciate more of an opinion on what you like about XPX. Thanks.

DJ,With all due respect it does not matter one iota what others think....it's what YOU think!Hence the repeated suggestions to try the demo prior to actually purchasing anything.

One of the most important things I like in X-Plane, is the possibility to try the fully functional free demo that allows me to evaluate the final product in its latest release.I'm not being a smart &@($*, I'm serious. It _really_ is an important thing I like in X-Plane. :(

Excellent! Can you share why you keep coming back to the demo/full version. In other words, what is about the demo that brings you joy and keeps you coming back to it over and over again. It's obviously clear from the responses that XPX is nowhere near complete, but I know that there are simmers who find much joy. I want to expand my level of fun. These ideas are what interest me. What can I do with XPX that will bring me more joy? Thanks again for all the positive responses.

:( Good lord people. You won't be dissapointed Jose, you just will have to get use to it. I had fits with XPX when I bought it, and almost gave up on it. When I really sat down and "dove" into it, it was great. I don't play FSX anymore, not because I don't still enjoy it, but because XPX suits my needs. The rual scenery is spectacular at times, and the sim as a whole, is much more stable and framerate friendly than FSX. 3rd party aircraft are a must in my opinion, but are very enjoyable. Cities and towns are nice, just not complete, but it's something you will overcome when flying over the beutiful scenery in between. Clouds and weather are VERY nice IMO. Acually flying IFR in XPX is much more reallistic than in FSX. The cloulds are not as "pretty" as they are in FSX, but feal more volumetric. You're not flying through "sheets" of cloulds, when you get yourself into clouds if XPX, you stay in them, and, your on intruments until you're out of them.Tim
