Why do I sometimes just simply lose my brakes?

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone:Took 3 flights today in the NGX. 2 of 3 of them I simply lost my brakes - autobrakes were armed and set to 3, and I was able to slow to mega_shok.gif kts. so the auobrakes worked, but then as soon as I retarded the reversere thrusts and tried to brake the aircraft manually, no matter what I did I could not slow the aircraft. It EVENTAULLY stopped after I turned off the RWY and headed a long way down the taxiways, but that was at least 90 seconds later. No mater how many times I hit the brakes nothing happened (and it even said "brakes" in red at the lower left of the screen as it always does. ) Is this a programmed failure? Is this a bug (likely not)? Thanks,Chris Catalano

Check this:http://forum.avsim.n...-ngx-read-this/Edit:Also it could be that you failed them when departing. Maybe leaving them on for push back or taxi. Also I seem to remember Robert talking about a failure that occurs if you put the parking brake off and on a few times rapidly, but I can't find it.

I get that as well, I think it's when I use the brakes too often. Like if I'm doing touch and go's....perhaps I'm not letting them cool for long enough?Anyway the solution for me is to clear the failures.

"I think you need to check your Failure alerts. This happened to me and when I looked up the System Failures in the Options menu of the MCP I discovered, yep, my brakes had failed."

I had a brake failure only once when I used Autontakes 3 and a lot of heavy additional brakeing. Maybe you use the setting 3 too often. I mostly use 1 or2 as that will suffice in most situations.

If you're using steel brakes, they loose their effectiveness if you continuously brake and increase the temperature. If you're using carbon brakes, they don't loose their effectiveness.

I would get brake failures after greasing the landing and taxi to the gate with light braking. I like to turn the plane and taxi back out for another flight. The only fix is to reload the NGX and do the preflight over again. CDU shows it cleared but it never really does. Frustrating since I dont know If the fail exists untill I try to taxi. I only fly in VATSIM so its kind of a drag when I have to call ATC to let them know the situation and it'll take me ten minutes to reload the aircraft and reaccomplish the preflight.

It seems I now NEVER have any brakes upon landing. I try them before I leave the runway, and they always work fine. But no matter what lately, they are always gone when I arrive at the airport. I do not see any indications in the FMC options that they are even failing or that they did fail. They are just GONE! This is really bad, and there is no reason for this. I am really frustrated about this. I have tried different models (600-900 NGX) and it seems the same problem keeps occuring. I do not have any idea how to fix this. Now I know it is not me. Obviously there is a bug in this PMDG.Chris

OK - now I am REALLY confused. I did the same flight from Portland to Seattle. I deliberately tried the brakes before I took off, and they were perfect. But once again, when I landed - no brakes. This time, I made ABSOLUTELY SURE that I have every single failure turned OFF in the options menu. I had maintenance clear ALL (even though there was nothing listed. But when I landed, once again - NO BRAKES! What am I doing wrong??!! I checked the failures menu, and sure enough, I had 2 brake failures listed in red. Overheating and excessive temperature. I cleared them and they worked again. But this is impossible! How could they overheat since they were perfect before takeoff? All I did was taxi 15 feet and tap the brakes before T/O and that is IT! What could have gone wrong DURING FLIGHT to overheat them? And since I had no failures selected to happen, how could this have happened? I am afraid I must have corrupted some file. Do I need to reinstall the 737 at this point? This was never an issue except once in a blue moon. I even restored the panel to the default. I am at my wits end. Does anyone know EXACTLY what to do to fix this? I have rebooted my machine. I have refreshed the aircraft. But as soon as I load this flight (or others) it seems to corrupt the brakes upon touchdown. Thanks again,Chris

That´s indeed really strange. Maybe you just drop the PMDG guys a line with that problem.

But what I don't get is that they work when I taxi. Somehow they stop working during my flight when I am nit even using them. I don't even taxi at the beginning of my flights - I always start on the departing runway just to save time. Now wouldn't I see something in the failures page during my flight? When I land, I get the message that reads, 2 failures (in red). They say: Excessive Brake Heat and Brakes Failed".So how do I clear them so they do not fail again next flight? I even chose a different 737 600 NGX (thus refreshing the aircraft). I created a different flight, and still the same result...I am so lost right now. Any ideas? Thanks,Chris Catalano

OK - after much trouble shooting, I see now that this issue with the brakes is only occurring with the 600 series model. I took individual flights with the 700, 800, and 900, and each time I had brakes upon landing. As soon as I load the 600, I have no more brakes upon landing. This happens every time. Refreshing the aircraft makes no difference, neither does starting a 600 flight from scratch (no preloading a saved flight). The brakes on my 600 always work when I leave the airport, but fail upon touchdown. I make sure each time that no failures are scheduled to happen, in particular any failures relateed to the brakes. I try clearing the failure with the hopes that the next time I load the 600 the problem will be gone, but they always fail anew each flight. The failure always says that I have "excessive brake heat" and that the "brakes failed". Desppite clearing the failure after each touchdown, and even having the maintenence options in the FMC fix all failures and service all aspects of the airplane, whatever I am doing seems to keep reloading the bug only on the 600. Does anyone know of a general fix to this? I sent a ticket to PMDG too to see if they can resolve this error. Thanks again,Chris

Chris,I'm not clear on this...on the flights where you experience this, are the autobrakes working and then the brakes don't work on the taxi in to the gate? When you display your brake temps after takeoff, what do they read? And what do they read after landing? What's your landing weight? Speed at touchdown? Runway length? How far down the runway are you making the turnoff? Are you also using reverse thrust after touchdown?

I do not actually know if the autobrakes are actually working or not (although I believe they are). I have used utobrakes 2, 3 4, and max (tried them all) - Yes, I am using reverse thrust, and then I abandon that at mega_shok.gif kts and go to manually braking - that's when I notice the brakes are not working. My weight is really light upon landing - around 117.3, so says the FMC, My speed at touchdown is 129 Kts, the runway length at Seattle KSEA 16L is 11209 ft (plenty long enough for this light landing). The fuel remaining is between 2 and 4000 lbs (really light for a landing such as this. There is never any fuel in the center tanks. Also, I intend to turn off the runway when I get to about 20 KTS, but I can't slow down with no brakes, so turning off becomes nearly impossible. Most important - how do I find out the brake temps before takeoff and after landing? Where exactily is that information displayed? I often see smoke pouring out the rear wheels (excessive brake heat I presume...). So how can I find out the brake temperature? (and what seems to be causing the overheat in this light landing)I really appreciate the help. Thanks,Chris

No problem, Chris. I had a similar problem in testing that turned out to be a controller issue -- my rudder pedal toe brakes were improperly calibrated and causing me to drag my brakes during the taxi out to the runway. The smoke you see coming from the main wheels is a good indicator that your brakes are overheating. Just to the left and below the autobrakes knob, there's a button labeled "SYS". If you press that, you'll bring up the brakes display on the lower EICAS screen. The brake temps are provided on a scale of 0.0 to 9.9. If you have high temps before takeoff, then you're almost certainly dragging the brakes (the other possibility is that you're using the brakes too much while taxiing). If you're not over-using the brakes in taxi, then check calibration, and give your self a slightly larger null zone on the toe brakes. Let us know how it goes!

Hi:Thanks for the help. OK - same flight from Portland to Seattle. I checked the brakes before departing. They worked fine. The temperature was 0.0. I periodically monitored the temp. during my flight (sounds strange!) and they were still at 0.0. I greased the landing - and somehow they worked today. The temp of the brakes never got over 1.0 (is that an acceptable range?). I must say that I flew the plane totally empty - no payload at all, and with only 11K gallons of fuel. Question - if I land too hard (greated than 200 fpm) will this also automaticlly induce a brake failure? Sometimes I tend to land a little hard...Keeping my fingers crossed...Thanks,Chris
