A minor rant

Featured Replies

Just a little rant from me. Appreciate repainters helping us all out with some fantastic work for this hobby but it does annoy me when they can't put the right details in the config file. I just downloaded a cargolux repaint for PMDG 747F and FS9 and all model details were wrong. If I was a newcomer to this hobby I would have been stumped but finally realised I needed to change the model from GE to GEF and the sim from 747-400 to 747-400F.Not going to name the culprit but I am now expecting hours of pleasure from my new purchase of the PMDG 747-400F.On a different note just also bought Aerosofts Djerba X, Friedrichshafen and Maastricht all new for FS9FS9 Dying? Not on current new scenery and aircraft developmentsJohn

Yep, I noticed the Maastricht scenery a couple of days ago and bought it. I've yet to look at it but I'm pleased to have got it as I don't have very much in the way of good airports for the Netherlands.I don't think FS9 is dying either although it may be slowing down a little ! I still love the sim though. I won't be moving to another one any time soon as I have so much tied up in FS9.David

can't put the right details in the config file.
I too appreciate their work but it is annoyng after installing the livery then looking all over for it and correcting the cfg file. Most the time its renaming the ui variation or manufacture from like Boeing PSS to just Boeing or Wilco/Feelthere to Airbus.. Also if the VC textures are not included, it would be nice to state they will have to manually added. When I was a rookie it would drive me NUTS!

if i spent time to contribute something to this hobby and in return got a very public complaint, i'd think twice about contributing again.

Just my three-pennyworth.Yes, it is true that quite a lot of files that people have made available to us free of charge lack a little in terms of installation instructions but they are indeed free and perhaps we should be grateful for that and accept a few shortcomings. It is true that something like you discovered can be a frustration for inexperienced users but the answers are all out there somewhere and can be learnt. I am a heavy user of add-ons and over the years I have learnt enough through forums and other web resources to solve most puzzles and can only recall ditching one free download altogether because it wasn't at all clear what it did or how to install it. (Obvioulsy I have installed and removed a few that I didn't like or want). The first line of action is surely to contact the developer privately and mention it in a nicely worded way? I have actually made a few very good friends in Flight Simulation that way.John

Hi AllInteresting replies. Not intended as a complaint - just a little frustrating and I do appreciate all the work that people do to contribute to the hobby. And BTW on purpose I haven't named anyone either.ThnxJohn

I'll agree it is frustrating, very, when this happens - and unfortunately it does crop up quite a lot. I try to make sure uploaded files have detailed enough installation instructions but I can't check through all the readmes and check the codes individually for obvious reasons.Im creating a tutorial on how to install repaints later today, I'll be sure to mention something along the lines of checking the config info.

Only just got back in to flight simming and Avsim after a year or so - pardon me whilst I find my feet again!

Or even tell us the name of the upload that contains the original aircraft. That really hacks me off when I'm looking for a particular airline/plane to fill in some blank AI.I might take five minutes to find a suitable livery then the rest of the evening trying to determine which zipfile I need to download with it... though I suppose the fault (?) may lie with the library's search engine. As a simple, effortless, courtesey PLEASE could all you repainters give full information with your uploads? Some of us find a livery we need, then go looking for the plane. Thanks and more thanks for all your work.D

Sam I now have a feeling I raised the issue in the wrong place but having done so appreciate the response from a senior member of AVSIM file library. If you would like a team of repaint checkers it might be a good idea and you could count on me and I am sure a few of the more experienced simmers to vet the files before they are uploaded? One way to offer my services back to a hobby thats given me years of pleasureJohn
