Review in Progress: Microsoft Flight

Featured Replies

The reason people say that Flight is an arcade game is not because of what they read in forums, but because of what MS has shown in their promo videos.

That makes not one whit of difference. No one can honestly state something as a fact based strictly on static images, poorly done video clips that focus only on the "fun" stuff while completely ignoring the "serious" stuff, and reading nothing but opinionated drivel on web forums. One must actually do their own due diligence, and that requires an open-minded, first hand experience.

Speaking of an uninhabited world, I tried the short landing challenge in standalone mode. There were other aircraft parked in the area at the airport; I guess waiting to compete in the challenge. The announcer during the competition kept talking as if there were other aircraft in the skies using references such as "they".I never saw anyone else though in the sky or on the ground other than abandoned aircraft.

One small thing, in one of the loading screen it mentions needing a Helicopter for some Aerocache's, implying that 'choppers are in the pipeline

People can - and frequently do - make decisions all the time about things that they have not tried nor have any intentions of trying, especially if it is from promotional material of the manufacturer. You seem to imply that people who do not try Flight are not open minded. If MS sees it fit to push the arcade features of the game, it is not surprising that that's the image the game will have. For some open minded people the lack of certain features in Flight is a show stopper. It may not make it an arcade game, but it might make it a bad game or a game that they would like to see improved before they buy it.I tried the game in the beta. It is not all arcade. I have an open mind and I still find Flight to be lacking in many of its implemented features. It may not crash with great regularity, but it has many faults. How many of these faults will be fixed in a timely manner, if ever, is what I am interested in seeing.

I said nothing at all about "making decisions." I spoke solely about making statements of FACT. I even underlined it for emphasis. I guess you glossed over that. How often has someone written something like "Since there's no IFR possible, Flight is..." They are guilty of making an erroneous conclusion of fact with absolutely no self-experience to substantiate such a statement.

You have to look past that and discover the hidden gems that are actually there.
Are you referring to the floating gold coins? :LMAO: Sorry, I just couldn't resist. I am installing Flight for myself as we speak. So... I will see it for myself.

No, I'm referring to having to clean up the "yellow puddle" the incontinent passenger leaves behind because you didn't land fast enough so she could go pee! Seriously. No joke...

Just make sure you turn off the assists and stick with it through the training missions.

So, we shouldn't put any weight on what MS is saying about its own product and you have never accepted anything as fact unless you tried it yourself?Clearly, there is more to Flight than what is in promo videos. There is probably more to Flight than even the people who have tried it know about, yet it is a fact that many people think Flight is an arcade game, even after they have tried it.Just because you can fly an ILS approach manually in bad weather, does not make Flight non-arcade. I happen to think that it is not an arcade game, but I can see why people think it is.

What a great addition to Xpax, FDC, or ATC that might be for FSX! Mental images abound. Imagine your copilot screaming "put it down now!!!". I laughed so hard when I heard that, I about saved her the effort.

I love today Avsim's review. It says:"Flight Simulator is an excellent game where we all pretend to be pilots of different sorts... Flight is no more, nor less, a game than Flight Simulator X and has all the same hunts and hoops that are present in that game...""First of all, there are no jetliners, in fact, no jets of any sort. No helicopters, no sailplane, no Extra aerobatic airplane. No Cessna, no training syllabus, no Rod Machado jokes. No Artificial Intelligence (AI) aircraft traffic, no Air Traffic Control (ATC), no Flight Planner, and no Real Weather. No worldwide coverage with 24000+ airports...."Hahaha... wasn't it a game like FSX?... yes, but without nothing.

Me too. I was so startled I thought to myself "She couldn't have just said what I though I heard!" That of course is where the "Crude Humor" rating comes from......well, that and some other surprises I'm not going to mention.

I have said this before and I will say it again. First, most people who may have a casual interest in aviation are not interested in "puddle jumpers". They are into jets and planes that go fast. (hence airshows that someone here mentioned.) Second, most people; enthusiast and casual players alike, will want to see their hometown first. (I would have downloaded Flight if it were for S. CA or if I had a connection to Hawaii) For those reasons, I think Flight blew any chance of getting none enthusiasts into our fold.

I dont agree with you Frankla. Fly to any GA day fly in at a local airport, and you will see THOUSANDS of people interested in flying. Just watch what aircraft have the biggest crowds. Sometimes its a jet, sometimes its a Seabee (its an odd looking aircraft!) and sometimes its a highly polished Tri-Pacer. They are ALL aspects of flight, and people are interested in them all.
