March 4, 201214 yr Moderator I just wish there were a way to display the wind arrow/speed ONLY. The rest of the HUD could then remain hidden. Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
March 4, 201214 yr I found my enjoyment of Flight increased significantly as soon as I turned off the HUD. My landings improved a good bit, too, when I no longer had those distracting numbers in the windscreen to fixate on. I do miss the wind indicator, though.
March 4, 201214 yr It wouldn't be so bad if there was a hotkey to toggle the HUD. Sigh... this game has so many little quality of life issues that simply shouldn't be there.
March 4, 201214 yr It might have been me? I asked yesterday about finding out weather conditions prior to getting to the airport. The HUD is fine and dandy but can we assume that the weather/wind direction/wind speed is the same in the sky as it will be on final apporoach? If yes then the default weather system is not very realistsic, but so be it. Also my point was to find out these details before I am over the top of the airport. I guess what I am looking for is ATIS. Love Airplanes and American Muscle Cars
March 4, 201214 yr Moderator Even in real life, ATIS will be fairly generalized for untowered airports. But, it is something that's at least being considered adding in the future. It really comes down to what the majority of Flight users want, and that requires feedback to the devs. Fr. March 5, 201214 yr I searched but couldn't find the post. Doesn't this give you enough info to pick a runway?RayApart from the fact a lot of people, me included, have turned the HUD off, the indication doesn't tell me enough. It only shows the direction of the wind in relation to your heading. So you have to calculate (if possible) what the actual wind direction is before you can decide which runway is probably in use. I'd rather see something like 105/17 so I don't have to calculate anything. As it is now I would have to fly over the airport with the hud on and 'simply' look at which runway is the most opposite of the wind arrow... Cumbersome...I have to admit that right now whenever I do a free flight, I simply run at the runway that's closest to my current heading. But I also have to admit that I hardly ever do a free flight...! Doing missions and jobs is SO MUCH MORE fun! And in missions you always see which runway you have to land on. I at least presume the game puts the landing icon on the right threshold... (?)
March 5, 201214 yr HUD is ugly and big, just obscure the nice view... Lj. Prodanovic

March 5, 201214 yr I searched but couldn't find the post. Doesn't this give you enough info to pick a runway?Hi,I know I definitely asked the question but no this does not help unfortunately. You have to overfly the airport to determine the wind direction as it is not neccessarily the same 1 or 2 nm out as it is on the actual runways. Whilst flyovers are a normal procedure for uncontrolled airfields, performing flyovers at International and other major controlled airports is obviously unrealistic, which is why the game really needs ATIS, ATC, etc to set itself on the path towards being a PC-based simulator rather than a pure game.It was also pointed out that the indicator is a relative one which is again arcady and not realistic. That said, I do actually really like the pictorial wind indicator as it exists in Flight and I certainly do refer to it a lot, especially on the overfly, take off and final approach. March 5, 201214 yr I initially posted a question about the wind indicater being intermittent - Arwen let me know that if winds are less than 4 kts, indicator does not appear in HUDThat being said (a little off topic, but seems to have gone from a wind discussion to a HUD discussion) I don't mind the HUD. On my desktop hooked up to my big screen HDTV, it's relatively nonintrusive - I can look at it or not. However, on my (relatively) older laptop, the HUD is essential! The screen resolution is not clear enough for me to read the instruments without wearing my glasses - so I rely on the HUD for power settings, speed, and climb/descend rate.Which, I think, is partly what Microsoft had in mind - I can enjoy Flight on the big screen with my cockpit setup and new computer, or I can enjoy it on my older laptop with a joystick plugged in. Obviously I don't get as immersive an experience on the laptop, but still enjoyable.
