Free flight... er... refresh my memory... what's that again?

Featured Replies

Funny thing. In FSX I only did free flights. I never touched a mission or whatever. Free flight was IT for me!In MS Flight I did a few minutes of free flight when I had just installed the game. After that I checked out some missions and challenges and jobs... I think I did one or two free flight since the release, once to check out if I could still navigate using VOR (I could) and once to fly over the high buildings on the northern island (for 2 minutes or so). And that's about it. When I start up MS Flight, the first thing is look at a mission or challenge... it's so much fun! And Free flight is... well... a bit boring maybe...? :wink:I have to add btw that I haven't spend as much time flying in MS Flight as I would like to have because of... this forum... Everytime I start up my PC to enjoy MS Flight, I always have a 'quick look' at this forum... and before you know it my flying time is over without having done any flying.MS Flight and Avsim: what more does a man or woman need?

This is very true. I rarely do Free Flight in FLIGHT, but that's all that I did in FSX!

Happy Flying,

And that's what Flight it is all about! MS has raised the level. SInce 1984, i've "FreeFlew" and I don't think that MS would had raised to a new lvl with a FS11 with the same simulation design.MS had to change the meaning of flying. And I far I as see with the overall positive comments, MS hit it right. I'm eager to try it now...tonight after work and dentist session... :-(

and dentist session... :-(
Just close your eyes and think about the RV6 landings challenges 5 and 6... A dentist session is child's play compared to that.(EDIT Just kidding, of course: good luck at the dentist! I feel your pain... )

I have only done free flight because I was trying to land the Maule in places I wasn't supposed to...Parking Garage at Honolulu IntlBridgeSide of a HillThe BeachThe list keeps growing... :Hypnotized:

I am right there with you, enjoying the heck out of these challenges, and haven't even started with the aerocache hunts yet.And I am not sure which I am enjoying more, I fly for a little bit then head to this forum for a bit to read more, learn more, and share more, about Flight.Right now I am hooked on the Waipio Valley Challenge. I had already gotten the first low level award with the Stearman, now that I have purchased the RV6 with the Hawaii Pack, have been trying to do better. I just set a personal best, but dangit still not enough to get the gold or even the middle award. I max out my aerobatic points as well, at least I think, when they start showing 0 points I assume I have maxed them out.Best I can tell, this challenge will have to be flown at night to get a gold - tried it once, omg! I don't see any way to do that at night...Never even tried any of the missions in FSX, of course being the hard core simmer I am, why would I? Will still be flying the 737 from point a to point b in FSX, ane enjoying my great addons for it, but right now am I having a blast with Flight!edited - changed Maule to RV6 of course, not enough coffee this morning...

Being able to do jobs is a good thing. I am not sure if many players can fly together the same mission. It'd be great.

Free mind, young attitude.

RV6 landings challenges 5 and 6
Those 2 landing challenges are what completely changed my opinion on Flight. More of that will keep me happy :)

These comments are very interesting as it seems to be a trend across this forum. Flight definitely is appealing to those who want, for lack of a better term, "more structure". The comments about Flight bringing in people at a more basic level, i.e. make it simple at first to draw them into flying, is also true. What is weird for me is that all these things existed well before Flight in MSFS. Maybe the trouble was that to do these things in MSFS took a lot more "digging". I've been using Flight since it came out, free version only. I haven't even signed up for an account so I only have the Icon. I don't really like that plane. I can't even read the instruments... why would they do that?? However, it does seem to have a decent FDE. Yesterday, I went back to my trusted FS9, loaded up the freeware C152 from the French group... because it has a fantastic VC and it is equivalent to the Icon in terms of speed, etc. After more than a week with Flight, I was so much more happy with the C150, though obviously disappointed with the old FS9 ground terrain. So, right there in FS9 is a great low and slow learning plane, but unless you knew where to download, and how to install, you would never see it.You want missions, challenges? Try FSEconomy (free), or add FSPassengers (relatively cheap). But like I mentioned before, to get those "additions" it requires some "digging". However, I think those add-ons are much more "realistic" than what has been offered so far in Flight. The $100 hamburger run with the "passenger" commenting about how "cool" flying is was very annoying to me.I will keep a close eye on Flight, If it develops into something more, and with a more open architecture so that all the great developers can add to it (like a freeware superb C152), then I might in the future give it a second chance. For reference: real world flying way back when...( don't ask :Just Kidding: ) C152, C172, C182, Aero Commander; became too expensive for my salary. Yes, it's weird indeed, but I think you are right about the digging part. The great thing about MS Flight is that it's all right there in front of you. No digging needed. And I am not only talking about missions but also about performance and good looks. Previous incarnations of flight sims were always SCREAMING for 3rd party addons to make it look a bit 'current gen' or even 'previous gen' as opposed to the out of the box 'dark ages gen'. MS Flight has it all (as a matter of speach...) out of the box, right away. No need to spend hours tweaking, no need to look for addons that might do the trick, etc.Above all MS Flight seems to somehow bring a smile on the faces of 90% of its users. Somehow it has brought back the fun in flying. Don't know why exactly, but that's what you read most: flying suddenly is fun again and it's allowed to be fun too... And I think that's also due to the total accessability of the game. It's all so easy and fun but underneath there clearly is a sim. While missions were more or less frowned upon in FSX, even some hardcore simmers don't mind admitting they like it all in MS Flight!Imho MS nailed it. For GA anyway. :wink:P.S. The fact that MS forces you to do two missions after installing the game and before you can start free flight, might well be a very clever decision after all...

lol. You're right. My fear is not the dentist tooth repair itself, it is the anesthesia seringe injection which last 5 eternal seconds that I don't like ;-)

Being one that has had a LOT of dental work over the past year - a little advice, take the gas man - it helps and you won't care so much when you open that mouth for that needle!

Jeroen, Yeah, fun is in the eye of the beholder. What I consider fun in simming is basically doing a "real" flight: Yes, I pick a departure point and a destination. I then set up a flight plan, usually IFR. I go to ADDS to get the weather enroute, destinations, winds aloft. Back to spreadsheets I have set up which allows me to input the weather data to do fuel planning and time enroute. Now, I'm finally ready to fire up MSFS along with ActiveSky so I actually get the same weather I just based my planning on, and also RadarContact, for reasonable ATC. Get in the plane, start FSpassengers to add some "ambiance", run the checklists, and do the flight. An hour enroute flight will take at least a half hour of planning, and depending on the plane 5-15 minutes of check lists, and then the actual flight, and then shutdown. I am recreating actual flying, which if not done properly will "bite" you. Flight seems more along the line of what is appealing nowadays in the Light Sport division in real flying: small plane, minimal prep, short local hops. For other levels of GA, all the stuff I mentioned above must still be done if you want a level of "realism". Mike

I'm totally in agreement. From my perpective, these days, I'm not really into flying Airline Jet like I used to in the past few years. I'm now more in sports, bushes flying. At the limit I would fly a LearJet but I now in love with small plane.

Sounds EXACTLY like me during the beta. I even tried landing on various parts of the terminal/parking garage. :Nerd:
