Prepar3D.....Home and Academic Licence $49!

Recommended Posts

Of course, it is encouraging that they are expanding licensing options!
They should have a Senior Citizens license.

Oh My! Just completed an upgrade to vesion 1.3 Academic. PMDG NGX performed flawlessly in version 1.2. Now unable load the NGX.Event viewer shows "PMDG_737NGX.DLL" to be the cause of the compatibility problem. Here's hoping that I've overlooked simple this time around and someone here can set me straight........

Are you sure that you copied the files properly?

At my age, I can never be sure that I've remembered to do anything properly. (grin)However, I think that I performed the same ritual installing the files into 1.3 as was successful in 1.2.Waiting now to see if anyone reports NGX operating successfully in 1.3 before digging any deeperin the problem.

Maybe try running P3D.EXE in Win XP SP3 compatibility mode?

Does the Prepar3D $49 Academic version have the ATC module? Or is it like FSX Standard version and you have to buy Deluxe to get ATC tower controller functionality, I.e., the $199 Prepar3D version?

The Academic version has multiplayer and you can host a session in a tower, so it is effectively the same as the super-duper deluxe version of FSX (although multiplayer is in fact one of the areas where P3D is better than FSX, since it has been improved and you don't get all that log into gamespy malarkey which as you probably know, is appallingly shaky in FSX). Offline ATC is the same as FSX IFR and VFR, with the same default FSX airlines, the ATC window looks a bit different, but it is identical, same voices, options etc.Academic version tower hosting session pic:2012-3-25_5-48-28-686.jpgAl

So is there any difference in functionality between the Academic license and the Professional one?

No difference in functionality BUT, your 'rights' as a user are different when using the academic version.

Here's a simple comparison. I am in the process of doing more. I know what ring my hat is to be thrown in now. I am tentatively impressed, and hope that the game of semantics that LM are playing encourages devs to get involved with less fear of legal issues.http://forum.avsim.n...of-fsx-and-p3d/bestjake

Well then, what the heck are you all waiting for, Christmas?Bob
Right now, other than contradictory claims that P3D offers better performance, is even the low price of $49 based on the hope it will involve into something much deeper than current FSX? What really does it offer, outside of what I say is contradictory reports of alleged smoother performance?

It offers the chance that we may get an iteration of Flight Simulator that is DX11 capable, 64 bit capable and which uses the GPU more, which is worth 49 bucks to me, in fact more, since before that I had a monthly subscription. FSX is not going to get any faster, fancier or smoother, MS are done with it.I still use FSX, but the fact remains that unlike FSX, P3D is still being worked on, improved and expanded, and it already has features which FSX does not have; better multiplayer, underwater modeling, improved textures and scenery modeling in some areas, additional default aircraft.Buying P3D nails your colours to the mast and tells MS that they were mistaken to can the Flight Simulator franchise.Al

You are aware that 2.0 (which may include some of those mentioned features) will not come for free for the folks buying 1.x?Besides, wouldn't it make sense to wait until that cup of tea arrives at your very table, before telling everyone how it tastes like? Just asking, because the sheer presence of DX11, 64bits and so on doesn't automatically establish software miracles. It's not like this small business lacks of promising announcements, noble goals and some promotional momentum. It's more like the outcome isn't always as overwhelming as expected and, sometimes, doesn't match the hype. :(

Nice read about the 'being worked on' thing, but if you load it up, it looks and behaves just like FSX. How come? You even need the same old tweaks and you experience the same old downsides on e.g. the memory usage, the AA in clouds and some 'not that real' weather system. Just to name a few which were ok with good ol' FSX but might not be on a 2012 purchased sim.Personal preference may decide of course, but since this mainly is a flight sim it would have been nice to see that 'worked on' topic really come to life on vital parts, not subtle ones. Is the default aircraft count in P3D really higher than in FSX Gold by the way?
Buying P3D nails your colours to the mast and tells MS that they were mistaken to can the Flight Simulator franchise.
Once again, thumbs up on the enthusiasm, which is very close to naivety at times regarding this topic. Where is that special mast and how come that, in your view, a P3D purchase helps and other sims or just sticking to the brave addon devs does not?Get those 50 Dollars to a not multi-billion company of your choice, maybe to some of those impressive one-man-shows, and you've done more for that small flight sim business than you can imagine. :( Just a suggestion.
