March 27, 201214 yr You suddenly realise that you have FSX running just beautifully...and you don't know what you did to get there.Seems I have hit just the right combination of tweaking/leaving the damn thing alone to get it running really well in my favourite planes, in my favourite locations locked in at a nice 33FPS with no blurries and minimal stuttering.I just wish I know what I did different this time. Rest assured I have backed up the (minimally tweaked) .cfg.I think I may just make a clone of the partition as it is now as well - save me all this bother next time.(who wants to put money on me firing it up tomorrow and finding it all gone awry again for no discernable reason?!?!)Cheers Cheers! Iain
March 27, 201214 yr Author Or, on reflection, perhaps I have finally become immune to the numerous compromises and disappointments one has to suffer when attempting to get FSX to run "flawlessly" and I am just ready to final fly once more... Cheers! Iain
March 27, 201214 yr Moderator Glad you got it running well, but i'll be frank. To this day with some of the new equipment you and a lot of the guys are running, I find it hard to believe that anyone can be having any trouble at all getting FSX to run like a champ. I've been a full time FSX user since April '08 running on the rig in my sig and it's run smooth as a baby bottom all these years. And to boot, that's with a considerable amount of addons I run and with 1/2 the rig that most are using these days. To top it off I dont have to skimp much on settings either.Just dont touch anything and you should be ok now that your in good shape :-) Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator

To top it off I dont have to skimp much on settings either.I think a lot of it is managing expectations and recalibrating your frame of reference. I can run Battlefield 3 at max settings, locked in at 60FPS on a 64 player server with my rig......when you then come to FSX and have to start thinking in terms of managing a peak average of 30FPS with some of the settings turned down, it can be a strange thing to adjust to!Just dont touch anything and you should be ok now that your in good shape :-)Oh don't worry - I am gonna leave it well alone!...time to learn how to really fly. Cheers! Iain
March 27, 201214 yr After years of trouble I decided to give FSX its own partition, as well as put the appdata and programadata on that same partition..and it's been running great. But i must admit I haven't installed all addons yet John doe
March 27, 201214 yr And then a few days later you change something/add something and it becomes unstable again! LOL

March 27, 201214 yr I just found out last night that the plane you are in makes a huge difference in frame rate. Went from 30 to 17fps just from changing planes. Yay.

Yay.Not only changing planes but changing views from external to internal in the same plane. Bryan Wallis aka "fltsimguy" Maple Bay, British Columbia Near CAM3
March 27, 201214 yr Moderator I just found out last night that the plane you are in makes a huge difference in frame rate. Went from 30 to 17fps just from changing planes. Yay.Of course, you certainly cant expect to get the same FPS in the NGX or any other complex airliner as you would in the default trike. Unfortunately the more advanced and complex the model/VC and avionics, the more it will tax your rig and give you less FPS. For years there were always certain plains I refused to buy for FS9 and then for FSX due to hearing that they were FPS hogs, namely the PMDG 747 at the time. I ended up buying it on sale and it wasn't as bad as I had heard people make it out be to on FPS, but of course its not as FPS friendly as a Cessna 172.
