March 30, 201214 yr So has anyone been lucky enough to get their hands on a GTX 680 yet and stretch their wings in FSX?I'm curious to know what the comparison from your old card has been. I'm currently running 2 x GTX 560 Ti's in SLI (which I know has no benefit to FSX), so if I can get my hands on a single card solution that's going to benefit my FSX and have similar performance to my old cards in other games then I'm definitely going to consider it.Just after peoples thoughts/experiences thus far. -Anthony Young- "For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return." - Leonardo da Vinci
March 30, 201214 yr I've been running FSX with a Gigabyte GTX680 and it runs perfectly fine although no noticable difference in comparison with my previous card which was a GTX 480.As for other games it's much more of an improvement i'm glad to say
March 30, 201214 yr Author Hi Jason,Thanks for that. What are the rest of your system specs like?I'm on i7 2600K @ 4.1Ghz, 16GB DDR3 RAM, 120GB SSD (for OS), 1TB HDD (FSX).Has there been much of a difference in FPS or are you able to bump up Image Quality settings higher (IE AA etc). Thanks -Anthony Young- "For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return." - Leonardo da Vinci
March 30, 201214 yr The biggest plus is the 680 uses less power, and gives off less heat. Also you can probably push bufferpools=0 easier since it has so much more vram
March 30, 201214 yr Author Heat is one thing I was thinking about. My case is a little crampt with my SLI set up so whilst it workds just fine I can get the top card pushing some pretty high temps, so a switch to a single card with similar performance would be desirable. It would be good to see some more comparisons that are FSX specific though as this would be run more than any other game.Cheers. -Anthony Young- "For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return." - Leonardo da Vinci
March 30, 201214 yr Ant - you might get more benefit by pushing that little i7 up to 4.6 - 4.8 or so. You will be amazed at the difference it will make. You 560 is a nice card, will handle the extra load AND you'll likely be able to use BP=0, too. i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
March 30, 201214 yr I'm running an i7 2700k at 4.7Ghz 16gb DDR 1600mhz ram with FSX running off an SSD, in the VC at UK2000 Manchester I get 30-40fps in the cockpit.I use Nvidia inspector to adjust image quality antialiasing is set to 8xSQ and 2x Supersampling with texture filtering application controlled because I was finding horrible stuttering with REX water textures so I use anisotropic in game which has fixed the problem. I'm also running an EnB series profile on top of that and the card doesn't even sweat, if you want better fps in FSX you need a fast processor.
March 30, 201214 yr For FSX ,a 680 certainly isnt going to give any more performance than a 580 which barely , if any, gives more performance than a 480 :) Other modern games is a different story. ArDee
March 30, 201214 yr Author Thanks guys, I know FSX is mainly CPU bound but just curious to see what people are experiencing with the GTX 680. I'm sure it must be some improvement over a 560 ti.Paul - I'm new to overclocking but have looked into it somewhat. My system is an Alienware Aurora R3 which I was lucky to pick up for pretty much free so the current overclock is through factory settings only. Any tips/sites you could recommend to bump up my OC?I initially had some trouble with high temps with my SLI setup due to the fairly confined space in my aurora case. I did sort it out but temps on the top card can still get a little on the high side sometimes. Hence the reason I'm thinking about changing to a single card solution with the same sort of performance of the SLI'd 560ti's.Thanks :Peace: -Anthony Young- "For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return." - Leonardo da Vinci
March 30, 201214 yr Ant if your looking for a card that runs cooler but gives great performance a 680 wil certainly do that I was running a 480 before, the noise and temps were ridiculous.

March 30, 201214 yr Author Thanks All.Well I think I'm likely to take the plunge and go for a GTX680 although it may take me a couple of weeks to gather enough cash for it. I've already got one of my 560 Ti's up for sale to help out in that regard.I'm not expecting a massive jump in FSX but it will give me great performance with less heat/power usage than my 560 ti's. -Anthony Young- "For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return." - Leonardo da Vinci

You should see a nice boost when you use a PCIe3 board and an IB OC to 6gz.I'm waiting for IB and test results. MSFS
March 30, 201214 yr Man, what processor is it going to take to get FSX to fun flawlessly without intense massaging of sliders and such! I bought a new 2600K system and the improvement was noticable from my older system but not a night and day difference. Overclocking doesnt make a huge difference either. Perhaps in 5 more years FSX will find its CPU match.
