Why I like Flight and hope it succeeds...

Featured Replies

I spent an 45 mins this morning trying to figure out which combination of the FSX addons (including ones that I paid money for) gave me the least crappy looking scenery experience. The end result still wasn't that great and gave me single digit FPS in some locations. Great, so now I have to remember to think ahead and go into my settings to adjust auto-gen appropriately before I fly.

That by itself is annoying enough, but, did I mention that I really only get about 1-3 hours a month to sit and fly at my computer? Sure, given enough time I would enjoy planning flights in FSX and going from cold start to shut down. I've enjoyed Falcon 4 when I used to have the time for it. But I don't any more, just a 1/2 hour here or there. So I used up at least 1/3 of my simming time for the month with nothing to show.

That's why I like Flight. It looks good with no tweaking. I like low and slow GA stuff anyway, so I don't miss big jets or long-hauls. With as little time as I spend with it, it'll take me a while to get bored with Hawaii. Once I add Alaska it'll be virtually impossible for me to not be able to find something that's either new or I haven't tried in a while. The confirmation that TrackIR is being added only increases my confidence that it's a worth-while investement (for me anyway...).

Nice explanation, though I think if you edited your FSX.cfg using the tweaking tool, you would get a boost in performance. Try it! And Yes I do think that if we give Flight a chance to develop, it will become successful.

That's exactly the kind of thing he's trying to avoid. He's probably already used the tweaking tool anyway. I tried it then reverted about half of what it changed. Unfortunately, there's only so much you can do with FSX. And it's not necessary with Flight, which is his whole point.

Exactly. I have thought about using the tweaking tool (and if I have time that can't be better spent doing something else, I probably should). But, I don't want to have to download a 3rd party tool to get the game to work on a system that shouldn't have a problem running it to start with.

But I appreciate the constructive suggestion!

It's actually not a 3rd party tool that you have to download. When you send in your fsx.cfg and click "Click to Begin" the tweaker will automatically make any changes it needs. Then all you need to is download that fsx.cfg and replace the old one with the new one. Voila! You're done.

Tweaking and or tuning is part of and what makes FSX a hobby. Like a gardner keeping his tools sharp!!

Yeah, I used to run Linux on my computer too. Then I decided I'd rather use the programs on the computer than play with the operating system. :D

I can appreicate that. I've probably spent 8 times as much time tweaking and modding for the Strike Fighters series as I have actually flying in it. Just don't have that kinda time anymore though!

Good match then and it seems that it'll continue to suit your needs. The shame for some of us is that Flight could have accommodated both you and I. Have a good one.

I have been flying around the PNW lately, viewing my new Vancouver+v3 scenery....how does that look in Flight?

There is no Vancouver in Flight... Yet.

This kind of sums it up for me as well. Times have not been normal for me the past month, being homebound unexpectedly. Certainly gave me a lot of time to check out and find out I not only surprsingly liked Flight, but have been enjoying it immensely.

And when things are back to normal for me, which they will be in about a week to two, then my time as yours, will once again be severely limited and for the most part relegated to maybe a couple hours or so on the weekends. It will be nice to have Flight then as well, for quick and dirty fun.

You know I have been saying I will continue to fly and love my long haul flights in FSX, but once I am back to normal it will be interesting to see how I end up dividing my time between the two. Not to mention the combat sims I have now as well. Woe is me!
